About the property

Cottage in Ashbury, Nr. Swindon, Wiltshire, England - Churchyard Cottage, Ashbury, Oxfordshire, England. "A Romantic Retreat"

Churchyard cottage is uniquely situated at the convergence of the county borders of Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire in the Vale of the White Horse. The cottage is privately set at the top of a very quiet street next to the impressive St Mary the Virgin Church located in the charming village of Ashbury. It is the ultimate romantic (couples) getaway with direct access to some of the most beautiful walks on the famous historic Ridgeway. Making your stay ideal for scenic country strolls to heritage sites and tantalising your taste buds with local produce at neighbouring gastro pubs. And if you are bringing your 4-legged friend(s) it’s a dog’s paradise!

The cottage is set within easy walking or travelling distance to some of the country’s most popular heritage sights and attractions – such as: White Horse Hill, Wayland’s Smithy, Stone Henge, Roman Baths in Bath, The Cotswold’s, the City of Oxford and more… Its privacy, seclusion and superb location are so necessary for the perfect romantic break and are ideally offset by the closeness of facilities in and around the village of Ashbury. Guestbook comments from the manager

"Excellent"

Churchyard Cottage is an excellent weekend away. The cottage itself is situated in a small village near Swindon and is easily accessible from both the M4 and A34. The Cottage is furnished luxuriously and it is clear that the owners have spent a serious amount of time, effort, and love on decorating the interior; with particular attention to detail. The bed is very soft and well furnished, the bath and shower are both excellent, and the kitchen is well-equipped. But what stands out most about Churchyard Cottage are the little things. There was milk, butter, and a bottle of white wine in the fridge. There were toiletries, towels, and dressing gowns available in the bathroom. There was even a heater installed beneath the oven to warm up a small cold-spot in the kitchen. I would highly recommend this as a weekend, or week, away for a couple. There are enough things to do in the local area, but more importantly, the cottage itself is an exceptionally pleasant place to stay and unwind. I will most certainly look to return in future.

Beautiful cottage in a tranquil pretty setting. Lovely roll top bath and log burning fire for cosy evenings.

Great lovely pub down the lane selling great food served by friendly accommodating staff.

If your looking for a romantic get away in a peaceful location, this is it.

Would definitely recommend it

English countryside dream come true!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I absolutely loved our stay at this perfect cottage.

We booked a few days in advance of our arrival and instantly received arrival information via email and the Homeaway app. Check-in was very easy and we were grateful for the detailed instructions provided by Debra and information about the local area. Upon arrival we instantly fell in love with this cottage - from the flowers and garden, to the farm door, cozy living room, and lovely setting in the small village of Ashbury.

The cottage was clean, well-maintained, exactly as pictured and described in the listing, the kitchen was well appointed, and the bed was luxuriously soft. Even with the church right next door, we never heard the church bells when the windows were closed. The modern washer and dryer are housed in a very nice shed right next to the property. And we thought the wet room, complete with the rain shower, was a genius renovation. Overall, the home has all the modern conveniences you could want, while still keeping the charm of a quaint country cottage. Parking was very easy, too.

We enjoyed walks around the countryside and taking pictures of the beautiful thatched-roofed homes in Ashbury. The Rose and Crown pub just down the hill was delicious and the staff were very friendly. We felt like Ashbury residents for a few days - we wish we did live there! The location is ideal for day trips, too. We explored the Cotswolds, southern Wales, and Stonehenge during our stay.

We highly recommend this property and hope to return someday!

From the minute we drove up we were in love with this property! Quiet surroundings and all the comforts of home. Especially enjoyed the two local pubs, one just a walk down the road...and the Church...and the hills behind the church...all of it was just perfect. We used this as a hub to explore and it was was the perfect spot!

Information on the area:

The Rose and Crown Pub is just a stone’s throw from Churchyard Cottage. In addition to this there are a couple of lovely pubs that can be reached by taking a picturesque walk along the famous Ridgeway. Such as;

The Royal Oak in Bishopstone which uses their own organic ingredients from their privately-owned farm. It is also renowned as one of Oxfordshire’s No1 pubs.

The White Horse in Woolstone which also serves fantastic food.

The Ridgeway is located immediately behind the Cottage by walking past the Church and up the small path. If you take a left on the Ridgeway you can walk to Wayland’s Smithy (2 miles away) and The Uffington White Horse Hill (3 miles away). If you turn right you can walk to Bishopstone (4 miles away).

Ashbury Village shop stocks basic food supplies but doesn’t sell any alcohol or tobacco.

Supermarkets:

A Co-op located on the Watchfield Business Park and another Co-op in Shrivenham (both around 5 Mins drive away).

Sainsbury’s Supermarket in Swindon just off the A420/A419 junction (15 mins drive away).

Aldi, Waitrose and Tesco’s in Faringdon just off the A420 towards Oxford. (15 mins drive away).

Shrivenham is the closest village to Ashbury (4 miles away) which has two pubs that serve good food (The Royal Oak and The Crown), a couple of fantastic Indian Restaurants (The Gulshan Brasserie and Rafu’s) and a Chinese takeaway.

There is also a lovely delicatessen called Bloomfield’s that sells award-winning and locally sourced produce.  All the above establishments are located on Shrivenham High Street.

Local Attractions:

White Horse Hill: Fantastic walks and stunning country views over the Bronze-Age Uffington White Horse.

Stone Henge: Walk in the footsteps of your Neolithic ancestors at the world’s most famous prehistoric monument. A fantastic day out.

Roman Baths in Bath: Bath is architecturally stunning with the Roman Baths located in the heart of the city being another of the UK’s top historical must-see attractions.

The Cotswold’s: There are so many beautiful villages to enjoy; Cirencester, Lechlade, Bourton on the Water, Burford, Castle Coombe, and more.

Marlborough: A beautiful little market town with lots of quirky boutiques, restaurants, & newly opened Rick Stein - booking in advance is advisable.

Old Town (Swindon): Wood Street is filled with boutique shopping, delis, restaurants, & newly opened Marco Pierre White - booking in advance is advisable.

The Outlet Centre: Located in the old buildings of the railway you can pick up a bargain and also visit STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway.

City of Oxford: There is so much to do and see in Oxford such as; The University of Oxford, Oxford Castle, Museums, Heritage Sites, Walking Tours, Canal Trips, Beautiful Architecture, Botanic Gardens, Shopping, Fine Dining and much more.
