About the property

Secluded and tranquil creekside cottage 10 mins from Padstow - Peaceful Location, Ideal For Exploring Padstow And The North Cornish Coast

One of five properties in a small hamlet located on the Southern side of the Camel estuary between Wadebridge and Padstow. Built of local stone, and constructed all on one level, it was once the stables for a now-demolished tidal mill, and offers accommodation for up to 5 people (max 3 adults). Only a few yards from the creek, the cottage is quiet and secluded at all seasons and has a large garden on several levels, with apple trees, shrubs and flowerbeds. Access is through an iron gate in a high wall, which can be secured, so it is completely private and small children can play safely in the garden. The cottage is used for holidays by several generations of the current owner’s family, and although well-equipped, it is more of a comfortable home than a commercial letting concern, containing well-stocked bookshelves, family mementos, and pictures. Previous guests have loved the cottage for its welcoming, homely feel, and children particularly love the large garden which is wonderful for hide-and-seek and other games.

Fantastic cottage. Great location right on the creek but only a lovely walk to Padstow.

Nice relaxed owners.

Happiness and contentment.

  • 5 of 5

What a magical place to stay! There were only two of us and there is so much space but it still manages to be cosy, warm and welcoming. Beautiful views across the Creek and total silence - heaven. We loved the Aga and the whole house was spotlessly clean. The hosts are helpful and friendly and left us a great welcome pack when we arrived. We would not hesitate to recommend this house and will certainly return.

An Absolute Gem

  • 5 of 5

In an idyllic and peaceful location next to the creek, where we were able to watch the tide ebb and flow, Higher Sea Mills is the perfect getaway. It is immaculately kept, but with a real homely feel, with examples of the family's art on the walls and plenty of books and board games to enjoy.

During our week's stay we enjoyed several days body boarding at the local beaches, sampled a couple of the excellent local restaurants, and a 'Sea Life Safari' from Padstow harbour yielded sightings of seals, dolphins, and a basking shark.

We were drawn back to the cottage every evening to sit by the filling tidal pond, watching the fish and birds and also enjoy wonderful star gazing with no light pollution.

The owners were extremely accommodating, communicating very efficiently, and leaving helpful written instructions in the cottage. They left us some welcome goodies which were much appreciated.

The three of us (2 adults and a teenager) thought this was a very special place and hope to return

Wonderful house & garden. Great location

  • 5 of 5

We are family with 3 small kids (7,5 & 2) and had a wonderful week of summer holiday here. The house was perfect. Brilliantly equipt with everything we could need. It had wonderful views of the creek and a magical garden to let the kids safely explore.

The location was brilliant being a very short drive from Padstow and lots of amazing beaches, but also wonderfully quiet & peaceful.

All brilliantly straightforward and v helpful with any queries we had, providing highchair, cots etc. Only wish we could have stayed another week. Highly recommend it!

Arts and crafts gem tucked away in beautiful gardens

  • 5 of 5

What a breathtaking place to stay, this house and its gardens are beautiful with so much character, reflecting the great care with which the family look after it as well as their care of their guests. All sorts of really nice finishing touches too such as some groceries on arrival and toiletries in the bathrooms. Beds are really comfortable and the location really peaceful so we all slept really well. Gardens are stunning and we spent many evenings outside enjoying them as well as playing badminton with the set left out for guests to use. The walk to Padstow is also lovely going along the estuary and the beautiful wild flower field, as well as being useful to burn off some of the calories that can be taken on board by shopping at Rick Steins or eating out at one of the many local restaurants and cafes. We really enjoyed the food at the Blue Tomato Cafe and Mariners at Rock but book ahead if you want to eat at the local, Pickwick Inn. The hosts were easily available for any queries as well as making the house available to us early on the day of arrival which was really appreciated. Thank you for a lovely tranquil break.

We had a really enjoyable stay in this idyllic cottage. A little walk into Padstow but we were advised of this before so were ready for it.

Highly recommend the property and will definitely stay again!

Further Details:

While Padstow is well known to most visitors for celebrity chefs Rick Stein and Paul Ainsworth, Wadebridge is also worth a visit for independent shops, local butchers and artisan food producers. Both towns have a Tesco supermarket (Wadebridge also has a Lidl and Co-op), and there are numerous eating opportunities locally, from Michelin-starred, through gastro-pubs to family- friendly dining. Padstow also has a very good farm shop selling local food and crafts, and a local brewery, which offers daily tours and tastings. Further fine dining opportunities are available in Rock and Port Isaac, where Nathan Outlaw's Michelin-starred "Outlaw's" and Outlaw's Fish Kitchen" are located. Both Padstow and Wadebridge have banks, chemists, local bakeries and delicatessens, but these are generally closed on Sundays and some are also shut during the week in low season. Both Sainsbury's and Tesco will do home delivery to the property, and Ocado have indicated that a N Cornwall delivery route is forthcoming, but not available yet (as of Jan 2015).

The North Cornwall coast offers numerous opportunities for water-based activities, and surf schools are offered at Harlyn and Polzeath beaches. The more adventurous can try coasteering, sailing or canoeing, and any of these activities can also be booked locally, along with sea fishing or seal spotting trips by boat. The Camel Cycle Trail offers over 17 miles of off-road cycling along the River Camel, through woodland and along the estuary to Padstow. Access (and bike hire) is available at several locations along its length. If you like walking, the North Cornish coast path offers spectacular views as well as a variety of walks and trails in the area, including woodland on the upper reaches of the Camel Trail, or the ruggedness of Bodmin moor.

  • Notes on accommodation: The cottage is one of five properties in a small hamlet known as Sea Mills located on a creek on the Southern side of the Camel estuary between Wadebridge and Padstow. In addition to the three bedrooms and 2 bathrooms described elsewhere, the property offers a spacious family kitchen, with a large pine table and chairs, ideal for informal family dining. The sitting room has an open fireplace, superb views over the creek, and French doors to a slate patio with wooden garden furniture. The patio is overhung by a spectacular Wisteria, planted by the owner's mother in the 1920's. The large garden is divided into several distinct areas, with lawns, flower borders and old apple trees, and is wonderful for children to explore. For rainy days, there are TV, radio, books, board games (and broadband access) in the small sun room, or you can get out the wellies and and walk the footpaths that run directly outside the property to Padstow or Little Petherick. Outside: The cottage is set in large, landscaped gardens, with several lawned areas, herbaceous borders and a small vegetable/herb garden. The entire property is surrounded by Cornish stone walls, making it a private and safe space for children. There is a paved patio area with garden furniture which can be accessed by French doors from the living room, which is ideal for outdoor eating. There is an old barn in the garden, which is kept locked for safety reasons, as it contains garden maintenance equipment and chemicals. There is also a covered wood store for the open fire. Over the lane there is another small garden area, ideal for storing/launching canoes. It is possible to swim in the creek, or to launch canoes/paddleboards, but you will get quite muddy at low tide. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen and towels (including kitchen items, but excluding beach towels) are provided at no extra cost. The property is cleaned prior to arrival: for stays over 7 nights, a clean and linen change can be arranged. Other: Small sun room/study with desk, lamp, well-stocked bookshelves and telephone. Bench seat with cushions
