Guestbook comments from the owner

"Many thanks for another great visit to The Old Forge - a great base for exploring coast & countryside in glorious November weather. The accommodation here is excellent - warm cosy as the nights draw in, but it is all the extra touches that make a difference. Thank you very much."

November 2014

"Thank you for our stay in your lovely holiday cottage, everything was great. The location is perfect for loads of places to visit - too many to get around in a weekend. We all agree this cottage is the best we have stayed in & are unlikely to ever top it!! Best wishes for the future."

Location

From the Owner

We bought the property in 2001 as our family home. The single storey outbuilding which was once the village Forge initially served as a workshop for my husbands construction business. After several years of making improvements to the main house we turned our attention to the outbuildings, which were in a very bad state of repair. We decided to demolish the building completely & rebuild it using reclaimed materials. The result was The Old Forge holiday cottage. We love living in the Yorkshire Wolds & enjoy welcoming guests & introducing them to this little known area, which many of them describe as a hidden gem. The artist David Hockney continues to paint the unique landscape of The Wolds and we have some prints of his paintings in the cottage.

Notes:

  • The Old Forge is accessed via a wide vehicular bridge over the Gypsey Race. The building has probably the best view in the village overlooking the village church of St Mary's. Horses graze in neighbouring fields & the field across the road is home to several donkeys, which are a great hit with children! Archie the family dog is also a favourite with children & adults alike & loves to be made a fuss of. The village of West Lutton is surrounded by spectacular scenery & there are a number of walks which can be accessed locally, including parts of The Wolds Way. The Great Wold Valley Heritage Trail is a series of information boards in 9 villages including West Lutton, which covers 11.5 miles from Wharram-le-Street to Foxholes.
