About Rachel Bennett

We live and work in England for about 8 months of the year and spend the rest of our time in France. We both have demanding jobs and it's great to escape from the chores of work to the peace and tranquility that is 'La Maison Du Picvert'.

It's been an ongoing project for the last 12 years, renovating and improving our delightful cottage and in 2014 we decided last year to start letting the cottage to guests. It's great for us to see others enjoying the fruits of our labour.

Rachel Bennett purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Rachel Bennett chose Cher

As soon as we pulled up outside 'La Maison Du Picvert' we knew we would buy it - even before we got out of the car.

Set in a hamlet of about 15 houses, away from the hustle and bustle of any major cities it's the perfect place to relax and peace and quiet are assured.

It's a charming cottage - warm and cosy in the winter, cool and refreshing in the summer so it's ideal all year round. To add that extra bit of luxury we have now installed a Jacuzzi Spa hot tub on it's own private terrace. It's wonderful in the winter for relaxing in all weathers and by lowering the temperature of the water in the summer it's the best place to cool off with the added benefit of the spa features.

The area around the cottage is set to garden and the rest is given over to grazing for local sheep. With country walks straight from the door this is the ideal location for animals and we are completely dog friendly so "man's best friend" can come along too.

We can also offer organized hiking, cycling, bird watching and fishing holidays through a specialized company so please contact us for details.

Locally, within a few minutes drive there are places to eat, drink and pick up any shopping you need.

Larger supermarkets and restaurants are about 15 minutes drive and there is almost nothing on the roads - Perfect!

What makes this cottage unique

Free use of Jacuzzi Spa, complimentary logs for the wood burner

Fabulous rural views with peace and quiet.

Access to four different departments Cher, Indre, Allier and the Creuse which each offer their own regional specialities in food, drink and traditions.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We have had a wonderful time here in France enjoying both La Maison

du Picvert and all that this area has to offer.

We LOVED France. We enjoyed the mix of countryside and town, the boys loved eating out on the veranda, swinging on the swings (just shows teenagers are big kids still!) and fraternising with the sheep in the meadow.

La Maison du Picvert will always be special now as our first France trip and we will definitely be back.

Thanks for all

Frances and Freddy and Will.

Fantastic holiday home, in a quiet beautiful part of Central France

  • 5 of 5

Perfect if you are considering a holiday home with your family and dogs. The property really does cater for everything and the hot tub is a lovely special extra. The area is very peaceful with amazing walks, but there are a couple of small towns within 15 minutes drive. I cannot recommend this property enough, and my new young family loved it. Thanks the Henson's

Perfect retreat

  • 4 of 5

Fantastic property in a secluded part of the Cher region, gorgeous grounds for our dog Bailey to run about while we sat in the sun with a glass of wine on the raised decking area. Phil and Rachel have thought of everything in terms of our comfort, we needed nothing. Use of hot tub when required, felt very safe and out of the way, no traffic, no noise !!

Comfortable beds, cosy sitting room and great kitchen for which we enjoyed making evening meals or indeed BBQ food. We used this gite as a halfway house back to Calais from the de serve region where my parent live and was utterly perfect. These owners are fantastic and their dog Arnie is lovely, they also put us in touch with their vet so we could book dog in for puppy passport stamp and worming tablet. We will be back later this year but failing this will stop in next year for anther restful break. Easy and super efficient booking and friendly chat over the phone. In a word... SUPERB !

Beautiful cottage in peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

Picvert is like a home from home and this was our second visit. We went around the time of the World Cup and enjoyed UK freeview to be able to watch the matches each day. The kitchen is superb with everything you need to cook a full roast dinner if you want to. Plenty of private parking with absolutely no overlooking. The terrace was the perfect place to sunbathe and BBQ, again very well equipped with every detail thought of. Comfy beds with storage for clothes and a beautiful bathroom.

With all the facilities you would expect at home - huge fridge freezer, oven, electric hobs, TV, wifi, washing machine and powerful shower - there are plenty of lovely touches to complete your holiday including board games, small library of holiday reads, DVD player and wood burning fire. We'll definitely visit again. Next time we'll bring our dog!

Local attractions include Lac du Sidiailles which has a manmade beach, pedalo hire and playground, lovely cafes and markets at Le Chatre and Boussac and shopping at Montlucon.

A beautiful peaceful retreat!

  • 4 of 5

We loved staying in this house, it has such character and has been restored and renovated to a really high standard. It was clean and really well maintained. Home from home! It's in a small, friendly hamlet - it was lovely to sit on the balcony and enjoy a good book - great spot for a BBQ too.

We love to go for a country walk, and with a good map, you soon realise that there are paths to explore all around you. We had some lovely walks - I imagine it'd be great if you had a dog too - and an artist's or cyclist's paradise!

We called this review a beautiful peaceful retreat - it's such a tranquil country setting (yes, there's a few chickens, a few voices and such like), but it's private and peaceful and there's rolling countryside all around. If you want to get out to local historic and interesting towns, you certainly need a car! Within an hour there are plenty of fascinating French towns and villages to explore and good food in local restaurants - and in the markets.

We came back refreshed and relaxed! We'd recommend it!
