About Paul Fallon

Our family has operated a tourism business in Pembrokeshire for over 30 years and has a wealth of knowledge to pass on to both old and new customers alike. We resided in the picturesque village of Hodgeston until our retirement in 2007. Our son bought Rooks' Retreat from us 5 years ago and is enjoying carrying on the family holiday letting tradition. We want you to enjoy the cottage as much as we and our family do.

Paul Fallon purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Paul Fallon chose Lamphey

The village is very picturesque and ideally located for touring South Pembrokeshire. It is in the National Park - the only coastal one - and you are never more than a few miles from a beach & spectacular coastal scenery. It's also an ancient land with 3 of the best Norman castles within just 5 miles. It has the beauty of the West Country but without the crowds!

What makes this cottage unique

Anyone who values peace and quiet will love the village and Rooks Retreat. It's rural but not isolated. Just sit out at night and marvel at the brightness of the stars due to a complete lack of light pollution. Truly wonderful!

We chose this property because it ticked all of our boxes. Previous reviews were good, although we now realise were a few years old.

The house is in a great location, with easy access to the lovely local area, yet tucked away in a nice quiet road. We enjoyed the peace & quiet & had we like the house a little more we'd probably have spent more time in it.

The house is best described as 'in need of some TLC', everything is looking a little tired & worn & it's furnished in an eclectic mix of furniture which doesn't really warrant the term 'Stylish' as advertised. The property is currently on the market & the owners don't live locally which probably explains things.

There were also lots of silly little niggles of things which needed attention like dead light bulbs (6), non-working extractor fan, broken bins, outside light broken, smoke alarm not working, loose floor boards. All little things but add up to make you feel a bit fed up.

The layout is great, if a little cosy in the living area. The downstairs bedroom with en-suite was perfect for my elderly mum. Upstairs the 3 bedrooms are fine & the beds really comfortable. You should note that the only upstairs bathroom/wc is off the main bedroom which can be a pain.

The kitchen is a decent size & pretty well-equipped. That said, like the furniture, it's a mish-mash of non-matching stuff that feels like it's all a bit 2nd hand with stained mugs etc. It's not the end of the world but doesn't make it feel particularly 'lovely'. We were also surprised not to find an oven glove & ended up having to go out & buy one which was a pain. We could have done without the dishwasher flooding the kitchen floor the 1st time we used it & the 45 mins it took to mop everything up. The plumbing under the sink was poorly done & it looked like the pipes had popped out when the cleaner had put her things back in the cupboard. We pushed it back together & reported to the owners who were most apologetic & promised to get it fixed but we have no idea if this happened during our stay as we didn't hear anything more.

The garden could be really lovely but was in need of a good tidy up or at least the grass cutting & big stinging nettles removed. There was also a huge pile of rubbish sacks, attracting flies, which didn’t make sitting out particularly attractive. No need to clean the dirty garden furniture.

All in all a disappointing experience given the price paid. We will certainly return to the area but not to Rooks Retreat

Owner's Response: We take all reviews into consideration and thank you for your feedback. We are pleased that you found the location of the property to your liking, peaceful and in a great location with a great layout, especially the downstairs en-suite with comfortable beds. With reference to the reported issues, the dishwasher outlet had become detached, despite being in place for a number of years, but was fixed by the cleaner, once it had been reported. The lawns are mown weekly and the weeding, whilst scheduled, was not completed in time for your stay due to the poor weather. Light bulbs and smoke alarm batteries were replaced, as soon as we had been notified: we will now include a weekly check, to ensure that they can be replaced promptly when required. We thank you for your custom and hope that the issues raised did not detract you from your stay in our wonderful part of Pembrokeshire.

A wonderful relaxing stay in a great location

  • 4 of 5

The property was ideal for our short break, it had ample parking and was easy to find.

Inside it had everything we needed to make our stay as comfortable as possible.

I would highly recommend this property to anyone wanting to explore the beautiful Pembrokeshire scenery as it was ideally situated near local beaches and attractions.

Lovely welcoming property, my husband is disabled so the downstairs bedroom/bathroom was superb. Upstairs bedrooms great for families, plenty of room. There was 4 adults and 2 children for the weekend and the property provided everything you could possibly want. Owner is very welcoming and friendly. Our grandchildren didn't want to leave. Pretty good location for travelling to everything that Pembrokeshire offers. Very peaceful except for the rooks - but these couldn't be heard inside the property. So a well named property Rooks Retreat!!!! Nobody could possibly complain about this holiday rental and we are hoping to return very shortly. Thank you x

Car: recommended

It's just over a mile to the fabulous golden sands of Freshwater East Bay. You can walk up the leafy, country lane to access the coastal footpath (about 20 mins) & meander down one of the many footpaths through 'The Burrows' to the beach or it's a 5-min drive up the lane & down the coastal road to the car park/ shop/ toilets. The medieval village of Manorbier with it's beach & castle is 2.5 miles, private Swanlake beach is 2 or the award winning Barafundle is just over 5 miles. All are sandy.

The nearest airport is Cardiff. A car is recommended if you are to appreciate all that Pembrokeshire has to offer. Pembroke is easily accessible from the M4 & it's dual carriage virtually all the way through to Kilgetty, then the A477 onwards to Pembroke. Full directions/map & postal code for your Satnav can be downloaded from our web site The ferry from Ireland is just a few miles away at Pembroke Dock and there is a railway station at Lamphey.

Hodgeston is 1 mile from the villages of Freshwater East, Jameston & Lamphey, 3 from Pembroke & 7 from Tenby. Lamphey has a shop/post office/ petrol station/bakery/pub & restaurants.

Further Details:

There are 6 pubs within a mile who all welcome children & offer good, value for money meals. There are 2 quality restaurants in Lamphey & 1 in Jameston. The nearest supermarkets are located in Pembroke (Co-op), Pembroke Dock (Asda, Tesco, Lidl, Aldi). Tesco delivers to the village. Banks are in Pembroke & Tenby. Tenby is the largest town with numerous tourist attractions & lovely beaches. There are theme parks at St. Florence - Heatherton, Dinosaur Park & Manor Park. The biggest is Oakwood - about 8 miles - where you'll find a great leisure centre. Swimming pools are also in Pembroke & Tenby. Boating trips out to the offshore islands can be made from Tenby or Saundersfoot (a visit to Caldey Island to see the monastery is a must!). If history is your thing, three of the best Norman castles in Wales are within 5 miles at Pembroke, Manorbier and Carew. There is an unusual Norman church on your doorstep and a medieval palace at Lamphey.
