Beautifully Converted Stone Barn above the Wye Valley, Monmouth with Fantastic views over the Black Mountains and beyond. Situated on the Welsh English borders the property has 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and lounge area and sleeps 4/5. Other features include oak flooring, a log burner, wet room and South facing patio area with seating and barbecue. Original stone features within the property have been retained. The cottage is only metres from Offa's Dyke footpath situated in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and there are numerous activities in the adjacent Forest of Dean including cycling, canoeing and rock climbing. There are several excellent golf courses within 30 minutes drive of the property including The Celtic Manor Resort. Well behaved pets welcome.

We have lived on The Kymin for over 20 years and love the rural tranquility and spectacular views combined with easy access to the shops and local activities. The Top Barn is situated in a field adjacent to our property. We often have animals in the field including cows and chickens.

What makes this barn unique

The view is the best part. We have tried to incorporate this into the different rooms in the barn. In addition, there is a tranquility on the Kymin which means that you feel you are away from it all whilst in fact within 10 minutes you are back in town with all the amenities you require. There is very little light pollution so on clear nights the stars are remarkable.

fantastic relaxing time cosy barn

On arriving at the barn we were greeted by Cathy , lovely and friendly made us feel so welcome .

The barn was just perfect for us

, peace and quiet for a few days , and spotlessly clean , the bed was comfy and the shower was fab too ! All the mod cons you need .

Some good dog walks just a stones throw from the barn and the surrounding views are just fabulous .

We are hoping to get back there very soon.

I would definitely recommend !!

Better than the photos!

Top Barn was easy to find, parking was ample for 1 car and the owner was available for our arrival and showed us to the cottage. The barn is a short walk (1 minute max) down a footpath which had been laid with stones so it wasn't muddy. The new barn is built around the old barn which makes the building very interesting. The place is quite compact but makes good use of the space-the kitchen had everything we needed and there was enough room to not feel on top of each other.

The view really is fantastic and the garden enjoys the sun for most of the day which makes it a great place to spend a sunny afternoon. The BBQ was fantastic and worked well with the picnic bench next to it.

The barn could be improved with a little more cleaning (under the sofa-I dropped something and it was dusty underneath), the bed is a little creaky and a comfy corner sofa would work wonders in the sitting room.

I would definitely go back-great setting, friendly hosts, an all round pleasant place.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your positive review. I am glad that you benefitted from the outside area as it is a really lovely place to sit and look at the varying sunsets all through the warmer periods. The french windows and log burner meant that you can sit inside, and do the same when it is colder. I am sorry that there was dust under the sofa. We do our best to ensure that the property is really clean and other guests have commented positively on this. I will see what we can do about the creaky bed! We would love you to return. We have several guests who have returned a number of times and we look forward to welcoming you back again in the future.

Amazing place to stay

What a gem ...totally beautiful place the barn has been well thought out the owners were very pleasant and were not over bearing...they greeted us then left us to it. The views from the double patio doors were out of this world...all sorts of different skies changing constantly, mist covering the lower lands while the uplands were bathed in the most beautiful autumn colours. The Kymin was truly fabulous our feet crunching through the fallen leaves...peaceful restful place. We so needed this after a couple of hard years ...We will return we have found our forever place to stay ...

Fabulous property, warm, homely & wonderful views

Couldn't have found anything that would have made it better, perfect location for walking, great set up to take our dogs. Close enough to Monmouth you can go for drinks or get food but far enough away you feel like you are in the middle of no where. Looking forward to our next stay.

Fantastic property

We had a great break. The property has fantastic views. It was clean, well maintained and had everything you could need for a short break. Loved the double doors opening out of the lounge. Very private and quiet.

Nearest Airport : Bristol airport at 50 Miles Nearest Train : Abergavenny, Newport or Hereford at 15 Miles Car: recommended

Distances:

The barn is just over a mile from the market town of Monmouth which boasts a rich history and plenty of independent shops, pubs and restaurants.

Further Details:

The barn is situated on the Kymin which is a hill overlooking Monmouth with a National Trust property at the top. The area is popular with walkers and there are plenty of activities locally including cycling, canoeing, walking and rock climbing. There are numerous walks in the area with Offas dyke long distance path passing only a few metres from the barn.

Local places of interest include Tintern Abbey (20 mins), Hereford (30 mins) , Goodrich and Raglan Castles (15 mins).

The cities of Bristol, Bath and Cardiff are all within an hours drive.

  • Notes on accommodation: The barn is in a rural location and is accessed via a public footpath and some steps. Parking is 100m from the house. Well behaved pets are welcomed. There are often cows, chickens and other animals in the fields immediately adjacent and in front of the cottage and we can normally provide guests with freshly laid eggs and depending on the season, fruit (and sometimes veg) from the garden. Outside: The garden is private and fenced. There is a sizeable south facing patio area with spectacular views over the Wye Valley and Black Mountains. The garden includes a small lawned area and fruit trees. Seating and a barbecue is provided. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included. The property is fully cleaned between lets. Additional cleans can be arranged for longer stays.
