Villa in Montesquieu des Alberes Languedoc - Roussillon, France - Tranquil Setting In Your Own Grounds And Only 15 Mins To Spain Or The Beach In Argeles

This spacious villa set on two floors of approx. 200m2 has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms plus another separate toilet and another shower in the utility room. There are two bedrooms upstairs both with air conditioning and two downstairs, a separate kitchen, sunny conservatory, large lounge and dining room overlooking the pool. There is also an office which has wifi. There is a private driveway with room for 3 cars easily.

The pool is 9m by 4m and has steps to enter easily. It is slightly deeper at one end. There is a dining table which seats 8, outside the dining room doors for al-fresco eating (a canape overhead and parasols to give shade) and a gas barbeque for your use. The garden is stunning with lots of mature trees and huge pines - giving plenty of shade. There are also fruit trees so help yourself if something is ready to be picked from apricots in June to grapes and figs later on and strawberries all season!! There are tables, chairs and benches all around the garden so you can search or hide from the sun! The property is in a quiet estate with lovely villas all around each set in their own large garden.

It is 5 mins drive to Le Boulou where you can visit the market on Thursday and Sunday plus there is a couple of supermarkets here too. Nearby you have the lovely town of Ceret with its amazing scenery and numerous art galleries. For those looking for a bargain, only 15 mins to the Spanish border where you find the bizarre town of Perchus on the French side and Jonquiere on the Spanish side - 2 old frontier towns which now thrive on custom for their bargain shops - perfume, alcohol, tobacco, chocolate, toiletries and top brands are all much cheaper in this once 'duty free' paradise!

The sandy beach of Argeles is only 15 mins away but there are some great little coves further along the coast and worth the extra 10 mins drive. Collioure is one of the most visited resorts in France - I haven't met a Frenchman yet not to have visited it once in their life!! It is an old fishing village with an old fort but also has a network of narrow streets with art galleries and restaurants - you can drive here or take a boat from Argeles - it really is a beautiful place to visit and also has a nice beach if you plan to spend the day! The road in can get very chocker in July and August as everyone wants to visit so our advice is to follow the signs for the gare and then park there - this by passes the centre!

Do not be put off by the proximity to the dual carriage way - you cannot hear it from the house and it gives speedy access to the beach!

We are an English family who have lived in France for over 20 years. Whilst we spend most of our time in the Alps where we run a ski holiday business managing ski chalets which are run on a catered and self catered basis, we bought this gorgeous villa in the South where we have spent the past three years during the school holidays - and have fallen in love with the area!! It is a welcome change from the Alps where we often don't get a summer as such! At least in the south of France the temperatures and sunny days are more likely!

We've just returned from a 2 week stay in this wonderful villa. It is obviously a very much loved family home and as such, is very well equipped with everything needed to make a holiday perfect. Although it is in a residential area, it is extremely quiet with the other homes well spaced away and as the garden area is so large, privacy is guaranted. The pool is a delight, although I'd suggest maybe purchasing another sunbed or 2 as battle lines were being drawn over them!

The villa is in an ideal location for trips along the beautiful coastline as well as in land over stunning mountain roads and jaunts down to spain. Port Argeles is a lovely place to eat, as is Port Vendres and Banyuls sur Mer and the whole coast road makes for a beautiful journey. As is the road from Prats de Mollo and up and over Col d'Ares...take a camera! The Spanish border town of La Jonquera is...er...interesting! However that's certainly the place to stock up on cheap supermarket goodies and bargain perfumes.

We'd definitely recommend a stay in this villa and would love to return one day ourselves too.

It is nice to be surrounded by small mountains, be close to the sea and also to the border of Spain - if it was closer to our business in the Alps, we would live there all year!! We wanted a complete contrast from the Alps but also beautiful - it is certainly that - and with it being in Catalan country the culture is completely different. The house is well located with easy access to the mountains and the sea! The climate is also a great pull.

Nearest Airport : Perpignan or Gerona at 22 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Le Boulou at 2 Kilometres Nearest Train : Perpignan or Argéles sur Mer at 22 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Le Boulou at 2 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Argéles sur Mer at 15 Kilometres Car: recommended


15 mins to the long beach at Argeles although allow longer during peak weeks due to the traffic - more beaches further round the coast towards Collioure and Port Vendres. If its windy at the beach, then a nice alternative is to drive 10 mins to the lake at St Jean Pla de Corts - where there is lots of shade, sheltered from the wind but also other activities to entertain the kids - wakeboarding, monkey wires, inflatables on the water, pedaloes and a nice restaurant as well!

At only 15 minutes drive to the border town of Jonquiere, why not do what everyone else does and go shopping for incredible deals on alcohol, tobacco, perfume, brand names, toiletries and chocolate - if its a cloudy day, the queue to Spain is horrendous so my advice is to either go near the end of the day at 7pm when everyone else has gone home or take the motorway directly to exit 2 and you miss most of the town but still come out at the supermarket and other shops for the same products - this bypasses all the traffic.


The nearest airport is Perpignan which can be accessed by bus to the centre of town then there is a local service which comes directly to 'Les Trompettes Hautes' Montesquieu - basically at the end of our road. By car it is straight down the motorway 25 mins. The nearest train station is Argeles Sur Mer although probably just as easy to head for Perpignan then get the same bus out. The bus costs just 1 euro!!

Gerona is also close by - 1 hour 15. You can hire a car from there.

Further Details:

Nearest bank is at Le Boulou as well as the post office. You will find supermarkets here too. There is a big hypermarket in Perpignan but on our side so you can take the main road in and not have to go through the city - takes no more than 25 mins. It is a big Centre Commerciale with lots of other shops such as H&M, Mango and restaurants too. Great restaurant in Villelongue dels Monts -as well as a pizza takeaway (details will be in the accommodation), bread shop is Le Boulou or our favourite one is just off the dual carriageway to Argeles - 10 mins away in Laroque des Alberes.

There are tons of touristy shops in Argeles with gifts to suit everyone and restaurants galore- the port is a nicer place to eat overlooking the moared boats!

If you like Chinese food, there is a Buffet à Volonté in Le Boulou which is 'Eat as much as you can' - good value and very good food for all the family.

Over the boarder in Spain, Tapas heaven and delicious paella! There is a huge indoor shopping centre in Jonquiere which has factory shops offering low prices for top brands. There is also a supermarket offering duty free priced alcohol, toiletries, chocolate and cigarettes. You could deffinately spend 3 hours in here but beware if it is a cloudy or rainy day, everyone goes to Spain, rather than the beach so better to go in the morning on a nice day or evening on any day - the shops are open until late and you could tie in with dinner out in Spain too!

A visit to Collioure is a must as its very pretty - you can take a boat from Argeles to the town like a taxi ride - this gives you a look at the beautiful rocky coastline too.

Talking of rocky coastlines, the drive over the corniches to Spain is also worth doing - stunning photo shots on the way, wine tasting and even stop to swim in one of the many tiny coves.

Inland from Montesquieu des Alberes you find the gorgeous town of Le Ceret with it's many art galleries, fetes and stunning scenery. It is famous for cherries (and art) so if you're there in June, you might happen upon the festival with everything made from cherries.

There are lots of old monasteries and churches to see in the area - many have English guides so it is worth asking at the tourist office in Le Boulou or Argeles.

  • Notes on accommodation: The office has wifi so you can use the internet throughout. Reception on mobile phones seems to be better in the garden but depends on your network. The villa is home from home - you should have everything you need to make your holiday comfortable! Outside: Fabulous Mediterranean garden with fresh herbs and fruit trees, mature pine trees giving plenty of shade, tables and chairs scattered around to allow you to choose different places to have a coffee - Swimming pool is 9 x 4m and has a safety cover as well as an alarm for your safety. We advise that even with these safety measures, that you never leave children un attended by the pool. There is also a lawn which is great for playing croquet, badminton and boules - all provided in the villa. Utility Room: Utility room goes directly out back to the garden where the washing line is - who needs a tumble dryer in the sunny south of France!! Washing machine and shower also in this room. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels and cleaning service are included - However we do expect the house to be left in a clean order, with basic things such as oven, fridges etc left clean. A check list will be left in the villa. Other: The office is on the 1st floor and is an open plan space with a desk and wifi. Nice and quiet if you need to catch up! The conservatory is a real heat trap in the day - there is an indoor barbeque in here which has a chimney !
