About the property

Apartment in Capileira, High Alpujarras, Las Alpujarras Andalucia, Spain - Far Beyond The Valley Lies Morocco, You Can Sunbathe Or Eat On The Vine Covered Terrace In Privacy

Welcome families, mountain bikers and walkers! This delightful flat can comfortably sleep 4 people and has a fantastic terrace. Below is kitted out as a self catering dorm for 4/6 with a bike storage area, bicycle work bench with repair tools and outdoor power hose for cleaning bikes available. There are two main large rooms, both halves of the flat can double up as a day and night space by opening up the sofas. Although Capileira is thriving, full of bars and restaurants, this part of the village is very quiet and you can sunbathe on the vine covered terrace in complete privacy. The flat is perfectly suited to couples, small families, a few friends or as hideaways for one. All bed linen and towels are provided. Despite being built by the Moors in the Middle Ages, this accommodation has a modern kitchen both upstairs and down, also new bathrooms and large Morso stoves for cosy warmth in the winter months. The place as a whole is a great mix of traditional Alpujarran style and modern. The fantastic walking ranges from gentle meadow strolls to full on mountain hiking. The village is a centre for walking and for accessing the mountains especially Mulhacén, generally treated as a two-day climb from Capileira with an overnight stop at a mountain refuge en route. Capileira is part of a trio of villages along with Bubion and Pampaniera, all of which are interconnected with rural footpaths that make wonderful, manageable walks. The village is an artists' paradise in this “land of the clear light” and it is possible to find courses to further your own skills. Guest access: There is a road which threads around the edge of the village and a parking spot at the end of this allows luggage and shopping to be brought down. There are steep steps and guests should be aware that some of the narrow streets are cobbled. For guests who come by bus, help with getting luggage down can be arranged. Interaction with guests: All guests can be met at the top of the village and walked down. Meeting and greeting will be done by a very competent Spanish friend of mine who lives in the village and will be on hand should you need any help. She speaks perfect English and her local knowledge is very useful and entertaining. This area is also a Mountain bikers' mecca… bikes can be hired and a tour guide provided locally. There is also the opportunity for skiing in the mountains. Not far from Granada is the ski station of Solinieve. Whether you hire a car in Malaga, or prefer to get around by the excellent local buses (the local bus company is Alsina Graelles and their timetables are available online) there is so much to do and see… the lively market in the nearest town Orgiva, or the tiny villages tucked in around the mountains. Granada and the Alhambra are just an hour or so away by bus. With the newly built fast road to the coast, beaches such as Salobrena are just over an hour away and Malaga airport is within easy reach (under 3hours).

About Henni Tremlett

Henni has the privilegeof looking after this property on behalf of her family. She is a busy mum of five kids, teacher, freelance writer (and bee keeper who lives most of the time in Wales). Calle Romana/Nueva in Capileira, Andalucia, Spain is a place that her family has spent time in for many years and is full of treasured family memories. Her close links with the village mean that she can ensure guests are well looked after.

Why Henni Tremlett chose Capileira

This property fell into the hands of my family like a falling star many many years ago. Over the years all the generations of my family and extended family have had little holidays here. Often I have lent the place out to friends who need to take stock of their life and heal, it is a magical space for healing, fun and romance!

What makes this apartment unique

Sun, fresh air, walking, friends and lots of beer and olives on the terrace.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A lovely spacious flat with an amazing view!

We stayed in 'Casa Capileira' for a week in April having returned to the high Alpujjaras for the 2nd year and could not be happier. Cool on sunny days and cosy with the log burner on chilly nights. Peaceful location right at the bottom of the village with a view a could stare at for hours.

Lovely balcony to read a book whilst being close to lots of lovely walks on more energetic days. Handy washing machine and little touches such as spices and coffee. Would recommend to anyone and would definitely stay again.

Special interest holidays:

Walking and mountain biking is the business in this area, some good friends of ours are able to guide you in short or long walking or biking trails and they can also hire you mountain bikes and help with a work-bench, washing down bikes and spares and repairs. Also readily available in Capileira is flamenco dancing (a small but incredible school at the village square), painting by a friend nearby who is an expert in painting local scenes both in the day and by night), Spanish cooking.

With the newly built fast road to the coast, beaches such as Salobrena are just over an hour away. The beaches between Salobrena are simple but clean and there are some fantastic yet inexpensive fish restaurants down on the beach themselves. Pedallos and sun loungers/shades can be hired for the day and the water is calm and clean.

Malaga airport is within easy reach by car (under 2 and a half hours). Car hire is recommended as it frees you up to explore the other mountain villages with ease - off season the hire car from Malaga airport or nearby is really cheap.

Whether you hire a car in Malaga, or prefer to get around by the excellent local buses (the local bus company is Alsina Graelles and their timetables are available online) there is so much to do and see… the lively market in the nearest town Orgiva (20 mins by car), or the tiny villages tucked in around the mountains - all within an hour's driving and many within twenty mins.

Granada and the Alhambra are an hour and a half away by car.

Further Details:

(Fantastic local mountain bike guides and reasonable high-quality bike hire based on the streets below Casa Capileira).

Notes on accommodation: ust be careful on the terrace, accidents can happen (especially after the local sweet wine!) Parents would need to take extra care of their children on the terrace and near any steep drops in the village – personally, I never rely on Spanish safety barriers etc. No climbing on any of the roofs in Capileira. We would like the flat to be a no smoking zone please. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included in the price. There is a washing machine and drying line on the terrace if you need to wash towels etc during your visit. The flat will be cleaned and any linen washed at the end of your stay. Other: The terrace has bamboo screening that helps with privacy and also toddler management (although of course children should never be left unaccompanied out on the terrace). The village is very child-friendly as the streets are too narrow for cars.

Relaxing in Capiliera

  • 5 of 5

From the original moorish style through to the facilities, Casa Capiliera is great! I was able to walk in to the apartment and then immediatley start my holiday as there was everything i needed. The tinao terrace is a main feature and i made good use of that - the sun hitting it from just before 10am and staying on it right the way through to 8pm before it dissappears below the mountain. The view is quite something with lots of birdlife including buzzards and, other than a few local people and the odd horse strolling by below the tinao, it is very peaceful indeed.

Owner's Response: So glad you had a peaceful holiday and made the most of the terrace. The vine cover gives a choice of shade or sun and the birds are incredible. It is possible to see an eagle from time to time. Thank you for your visit. Henni

Amazing views!

  • 4 of 5

Great location, the best views in the village. We were in the upstairs apartment and had two big open plan spacious rooms both with double opening doors onto the wonderful sunny terrace. Basic but versatile furnishings that you can arrange for your own comfort. Kitchen had most things we needed although no oven. Electric heaters in all rooms and a wonderfully warm wood-burner which was essential during a clear but cold December. A great base from which to walk and explore in all directions. The car park is a short hike away up through the narrow alleyways and streets in the village. We fell in love with Capiliera and the magical landscape around it. Bea met us on arrival and gave us the warmest of welcomes and lots of information about the area and village. We would recommend this apartment for it's views alone and dream of returning to Capileira one day soon.

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to host such friendly and respectful guests, I am so glad you enjoyed the experience so much that you stayed the extra nights! I am going to be installing a small electric oven soon as it is useful, particularly in the Winter. Thank you so much for using my property. Henni

Super place

  • 5 of 5

We had a truly lovely time in both the flat and Capileira. The flat was charming and comfortable, and clean. I could tell a lot of thought has gone into making the flat welcoming from the kitchen utensils to the bed linen to all the books and dvd's available to use. I would certainly like to stay there again and I would wholeheartedly recommend it . Capileira is a magical place and the terrace was wonderful to sit on with captivating views. We were sad to leave. Many thanks for creating a special place to stay.

Wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

We were made very welcome by Bea, who took us to the property and showed us where everything was. The house was well equipped and exactly as described. The village had a 3 day fiesta during our stay, which highlighted what a lovely place it is. Everything you need can be bought from the local supermarket, there are small number of restaurants and bars plus a wealth of wonderful walks. This place is not for people who don't enjoy walking. The house is towards the bottom of the village with a lot of steps. However, we found winding our way around the little streets a great part of being in a hillside village. We will definitely be back to enjoy the gorgeous tranquil, sunny terrace and village atmosphere.

Thank you for having us in your lovely home

Owner's Response: Yes, the village and other local fiestas are dates worth noting and coming special for! The house is a fantastic base for walking and it is TRUE that a certain level of fitness is needed to stay here - I like the way you treat the daily traipse up and down to top of Capileira as a walking meditation! Thanks for your kind words.

Breathtaking views in Blissful Capileira

  • 5 of 5

We were met off the bus and warmly welcomed by the wonderful Bea, who kindly offered to help carry our bags through the magical maze of cobbled streets to our cosy, comfy and surprisingly spacious and radiant little cave house.

On arrival, we were able to freshen up, make a quick trip to the conveniently close and friendly mini market, and cook a tasty lunch which we enjoyed from the balcony under a canopy of grape vines whilst taking in the awe inspiring views offered by the mountains and valleys of the Sierra Nevada.

We spent our days relaxing and exploring Capileira and it's surrounding landscapes. Discovering wonderful walks, beautiful and diverse wildlife, and cooling down in perfect private shady pools in the river.

We felt safe and at home from the beginning in this peaceful mountain sanctuary and our stay came to an end far too soon. Definitely a holiday we'll be returning to.

Bea was a brilliant host. Easy to contact, great at English, full of life, useful knowledge and friendly advice. She even made sure we borrowed her sun hats when we went out trecking, which was a wise move.

The flat itself provided all that was needed. Fantastic facilities, clean extra bedding, maps, games, and a very comfy bed.

Perfect walking base. A stunner!

  • 5 of 5

The listing for the house in Calle Nueva was really accurate regarding the location which is incredibly peaceful, stunningly beautiful and the layout and facilities were all exactly as they claimed to be. I was extremely happy with my stay there with my six year old son. There were toys for him and dvds if we needed a bit of down time from amazing walks around the valley. We particularly liked the little walk from Capileria over the valley down to Bubion (where we ate patatas a la pobre in the Teide bar's gorgeous garden). The top flat was very clean and well-maintained and Bea who met and greeted us was an inspiration and real support throughout our visit. She gave so freely of her time in explaining which markets were on and where, also the best walks for all abilities. I would certainly recommend this property to a friend or relative. The energetic walk to and from the house up to the top of the village was a mini adventure for my young son and I in itself... the exquisite whitewashed streets were like a maze full of surprises such as cats with their kittens, flowers growing in baskets and climbing the walls and I don't think we took the same route twice! Thanks for a great holiday, we will be back! Finn and Sam.
