La Fontaine Rouillee, near Plessala, a beautiful tranquil rural area where it is so easy to relax away from the pressures of everyday life

La Vieille Longere is a character ancient long-house that combines restored original features with up-to-date facilities.

Located in La Fontaine Rouillee, a peaceful rural hamlet with extensive views to the distant forest, just over 3km from Plessala a vibrant and friendly small town.

Very comfortably furnished and extensively equipped for year round self-catering rentals, this holiday let really is a home from home. The gite accommodation provides good communal living space with far reaching views and a well equipped kitchen. There are two spacious ensuite bedrooms on the first floor - one a double the other a twin room and an additional double bedroom with small adjacent shower room on the ground floor.

Wi-Fi, UK TV channels, a selection of books, games and dvds plus large scale local maps are provided. In addition to the wood burner, individually controlled panel radiators throughout keep the longere comfortable out of summer months. British guests do not need to bring plug adaptors as a multi-point UK socket adaptor is supplied in each room.

Outside the large private terrace is great for outdoor dining or relaxing on a sun lounger. This is a perfect place to wind down and enjoy the stars in clear night skies or watch the birds, hares and deer that share this beautiful tranquil area.

The hamlet is ideally located for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers, close to a river and forest. From the front door there are walks along country lanes; explore the nearby River Lie with its restored watermill, follow the marked trails into Loudeac Forest, or admire the view from the tiny chapel on top of the hill.

For days out, it is just 10km from the intersection of major routes through Brittany, meaning La Vieille Longere is also an excellent touring base.

About the Owner

We completely renovated La Vieille Longere during 2005 and started renting it as a gîte in 2006, since when we have aimed to provide a well equipped and comfortable holiday let that we would enjoy staying in ourselves.

Our own home in Brittany is next door, so we are on hand to assist guests with any queries they may have, but take care not intrude on their holiday (we have separate outdoor spaces).

We're delighted to be members of Your Holiday Matters, membership cannot be bought and is only awarded to owners who demonstrate that they really care about providing a consistently high level of customer service and accommodation.

We run and maintain our gîtes ourselves and are pleased that this personal touch has resulted in regular repeat guests, who we welcome back year on year.

The most relaxing holiday, very helpful owners, spotlessly clean accommodation. The longere was perfect for us, we will return and will recommend it to others. We especially enjoyed lunching at the local restaurant.

From the Owner

As soon as we arrived at the tiny hamlet of La Fontaine Rouillee we knew this was the right place for for us. We walked around the longere and took in the wonderful open view across the valley to the forest and we were sold! When we bought the property the local community could not have been more welcoming, although the houses in this area of Brittany are well spread out amongst the rolling landscape the inhabitants really do care about one another. We still particularly enjoy exploring neighbouring towns and villages, searching out traditional auberges for long lunches before a peaceful walk alongside the River Lie.

The closest of Brittany's stunning north coast beaches is just 35km away at Hillion; from there you can join the coastal road and take in the wonderful scenery which includes small rocky coves where moules can be collected, long stretches of golden sand some of which have enclosed sea water pools for swimming in when the tide is out, cliffs topped by moorland with amazing views, and a wading bird sanctuary.

Stroll 0.6km to the River Lié, cross the ancient stepping stones at Roche aux Cerf and admire the restoration of the original water mill, continue towards the weir at Le Vau Blanc and discover the revitalised bakery baking delicious stone-ground breads in wood-fuelled ovens.

Have a day out: within a 30 minute drive discover chateaux and menhirs, massive inland lakes, medieval market towns, historic walled cities and the stunning Breton landscape edged by the dramatically beautiful north coast.

Further Details:

Plessala 3km has an excellent crêperie, there is a weekly market on Thursdays, a small supermarket with service station, bank with ATM, post office, bakers, butchers, cafe-bar and tabac. The park has tennis courts, mini-golf, a work-out track, an arboretum which has been planted in recent years and of course the trout lake, around which local festivals are celebrated with fireworks. The mayors office publishes a leaflet of walking routes round the area taking in the stone crosses that are a feature of this community.

2 nearby villages roughly the same distance from La Vieille Longere as the centre of Plessala have popular Auberges offering very good value lunch menus.

Within an easy drive there are several towns worth visiting, including:

St Goueno 5km : features one the highest points in Brittany at Bel Air, with a lovely little chapel and lots of marked trails to walk; on a clear day you can see the coast 30km away! Vintage car rallys sets off from here on hill climbs.

Moncontour 10km : medieval walled town with frequent brocantes and festivals, selection of good places to eat, indoor swimming pool, costume museum, tourist information office.

Plemet 10km : kayak and cycle hire, fishing lake, tennis courts, gourmet restaurant.

Loudeac 12km : larger supermarkets, indoor swimming pool with tubes, excellent aqua park, riding stables which organises pony treks, a wide variety of options for eating out.

La Cheze 15km : local craft museum, open air lido, very large fishing lake, blues festivals.

Plouguenast 15km : hosts traditional bread making festivals, another base for kayak and cycle hire.

Lamballe 25km : medieval capital of the area, regular festivals, horse stud open to public, very large market, art museum.

Changeover Day:
In peak season our minimum stay is one week with Saturday change-overs.
The rest of the year we are happy to be completely flexible about change-over days and offer 10 or 11 night bookings and short breaks subject to not being left with unsaleable gaps in our calendar.

Refundable security bond of 200€ is required on arrival at the gite.

From the Owner

La Vieille Longere was renovated specifically with couples sharing a holiday or small groups of adults in mind, which is why we installed an ensuite shower room for each first floor bedroom. The property can sleep six guests in comfort, but it seems to be most popular with parties of four looking for space to spread out - so we price for this number and apply a small linen surcharge (payable in cash on arrival) for larger groups. Although there are no specific disabled facilities, the downstairs bedroom and adjacent shower room make life easier for any guests wishing to avoid stairs. This layout also allows us to give individual couples the option to rent just the ground floor at a discounted rate.

  • Notes on accommodation: Listed prices are for 4 guests. The property can sleep up to 6, there is a small surcharge to cover additional laundry & utility costs for the 5th and 6th occupants. Couples choosing to rent just the one bedroom ground floor accommodation can benefit from an under-occupancy discount. Please contact us to arrange a reduced rate quotation prior to booking. Our home in Brittany is next door to La Vieille Longere and are happy to assist our guests should they need help or advice; however, we are careful not to intrude on their holiday and each property has its own private outdoor space. There is a drive and unloading area at the front the longere and parking area to one side. Other: Guests can have access to our separate lockable store room to keep their cycles, golf clubs, fishing tackle etc on request.
