About the property

Cottage in Salagnac, Nr. Hautefort, Dordogne, Aquitaine, France - Set In A Quiet Hamlet with Large Garden and Stunning Views.

This stone cottage, is 2 kilometres from Genis which has three restaurants, a butcher, and an artisan baker who sells wonderful croissants as well as essential groceries. The accommodation is on the ground floor. All main rooms are south facing onto the garden. The lounge/diner has an impressive fireplace with wood-burning stove, a French window onto the terrace, and a staircase to the attic (so all rooms are full height). There are two large, light and airy bedrooms one with a French window onto the terrace. The bathroom has been recently fitted to a high standard. The kitchen is well equipped and gives onto the lounge. A basement houses the washing machine and garden furniture. The house is attractive and comfortable, whereas the location is absolutely stunning. During many summers in Sarrazanas, we have essentially lived outside on the terrace, in the garden or walking and cycling in the local area. The terrace is great for listening to the birds, looking at the views. There is so little light pollution the night sky looks awesome with the milky way very pronounced. The property comprises one hectare, just under half of which is garden, the remainder is in the adjoining field, where you will often sees the neighbour’s Limousine cattle grazing. The garden contains a beautiful barn, two wells (both capped), a host of shrubs, a large grass area for playing, and an orchard. We won’t be there so help yourself to whatever is ripe: figs, cherries, mirabelles, peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots, pears, or even walnuts from a magnificent mature tree. The garden attracts many birds; each year finches, warblers, and nightingales have nested here. Golden Orioles steal the figs and hoopoes visit the terrace in spring. The nearest town is Hautefort (10km) with its famous Chateau and gardens, a supermarket (with petrol), and shops and restaurants. There is fishing at Etang de Borne (3km). Cherveix Cubas (8km) has an excellent restaurant as well as canoeing on the Auvezerre. In easy reach are golf, swimming, a watersports park, leisure lakes, caves, and many interesting towns, markets, and chateaux. Lascaux II is 45 minutes away.

We take electronic bank transfers and sterling cheques as well as on-line payment. Discounts are available for stays of 2 weeks or more and for couples. Please enquire for further details.

About Ed Sharpe

We recently retired to Devon. Previously we were in Surrey but lived in this property 5 months per year. Hence we were able to enjoy the French summer, and an outdoor life while working on-line from home. Holiday letting allows us to afford the upkeep so that we can retain our second home for family holidays. To sell this would be very painful.

Ed Sharpe purchased this cottage in 2003

Why Ed Sharpe chose Salagnac

We bought this property having viewed scores of others because of the views. Then we realised how good the garden and area were.

The area has just the right population for us, never crowed but always someone there if you need them.

Hautefort and Excideuil satisfied most of our needs, but we went to Perigueux, St Yrieix, or Brive when necessary.

We entertained a succession of guests with day trips throughout Dordogne and Limousin.

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoyed the house as a holiday home for several years, before living there 5 months/year 2007-2014.

We spend most of our free time gardening or lounging on the terrace enjoying the views, wildlife and night sky. We also did a lot of walking, running and cycling in the immediate area, and travelling to the many chateau and beauty spots around.

The hamlet has only three households. Us, a French family, and a retired Dutch couple. They have been very kind and helpful, and have a great sense of humour. They are now close friends.

Nice house and asthonishing views in a nice area. Good walking.

All very fine but recommendation made to the owner is to replace some kitchen utensils and to have some extra cleaning done ( perhaps an end of season problem?).

Very attractive gite

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our week in this gite very much. We liked the fact that it was simply furnished and easy to live in , with a well-equipped kitchen, and a stunning patio, where we spent all our evenings.

Simply because I am very old, I would have appreciated a grab-handle,to facilitate getting into and out of the shower. That apart , no quibbles.

Lovely area but interior cleanliness let property down.

  • 2 of 5

We chose this property because it was in an area of France that we had not visited before and indeed there was some wonderful scenery and beautiful villages within travelling distance. Previous reviews had given the property 5 stars so were we not anticipating any problems.

The house is in a lovely, quiet area and has great views over the surrounding countryside as described with some great wildlife. We saw wild rabbits and a little owl in the garden during our stay in June. Inside the villa the furniture was basic and the bedding and towels were clean but we were very disappointed in the overall cleanliness of the villa. A used bar of soap left in the bathroom, 2 old sponges on the kitchen sink and a dead flower in a glass on the dining table greeted our arrival. We had to clean the fridge and kitchen before we could unpack our belongings and the oven was overdue a good clean. Most of the pans were so old with the non- stick coating being severely eroded I considered them unusable. There was no cupboard space in the kitchen for our purchased food due to being overcrowded with the owners pots/pans/tins etc. The house is obviously somebody's holiday home rather than a holiday let and it does show. After staying the previous week in a beautiful property further north I'm afraid the standard of cleanliness and let this property down very badly indeed.

Owner's Response: While we feel that the criticism is unduly harsh we are sorry that this holidaymaker was disappointed. We would be silly not to learn from it and to improve the property and experience of future holidaymakers. That the fridge and oven were dirty is unacceptable, we apologise for that. We have briefed the cleaner accordingly, also to be careful to tidy up the minor things like the flower and the soap. The soap must have been brought in, we provided bottled handwash and shower gel. Regarding the cupboards, as explained in the welcome pack the empty tins are there for visitors to use. Loose food attracts mice. While rather exaggerated she has a point about the saucepans, they are tired so will be replaced with new ones before next season. Finally, she is right this is our holiday home and we make no apology for that. Renting the house allows us to keep it. We want to keep it because it is charming and is in a magnificent setting - we believe these are important attributes for holiday makers too.

A lovely place to stay with beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our week in mid May staying in this lovely cottage. The view is just beautiful and the patio gets full sunshine all day long, it was so relaxing. I spent hours within a few hundred yards taking pictures of lizards, birds, moths, butterflies, dragonflies and other insects and only ten minutes walk away we watched coypu in a lake. Kay walked to the nearby village for fresh bread most mornings. The cottage was clean and homely and at night the sky was dark enough for me to take some magic pictures of the Milky Way, something I can’t do at home. We highly recommend a stay here, we would certainly come again.

Like Paradise

  • 5 of 5

It 's a lovely house in a tiny little village, named Sarrazanas, near Salagnac. We spend with two friends 2 weeks in the house, the garden and the environment. We had a wonderfull time. We enjoyed our "promenades" in the surroundings, the diner parties in the restaurants in the little villages in the neighbourhood, the fields, the flowers and the birds. We have heard and seen many times the hoopoe and the nightinggale in the garden. It 's a place like Paradise.

Schönes Ferienhaus in toller Umgebung mit fantastischem Blick und absoluter Ruhe

  • 5 of 5
