Converted Barn in Moretonhampstead, Dartmoor, Devon - Modern, quiet location, close to open Moor and local amenities, free wifi

The Cowshed is quirky yet spacious, a 15-20 minute walk to a range of local amenities including a small supermarket, deli, bakers, butchers, hardware store, Post Office, cafes, pubs and antique shops. There are lovely country views from the property both to the front and rear. There are pine floors throughout. Downstairs there is a large open plan living area with a log-burner and a newly fitted kitchen, fully tiled wet room with heated floor, patio with side entrance doors. Upstairs is the open plan bedroom, with original beamed vaulted ceiling.

This large room has lovely views; Juliet balcony to the front and and patio doors to the rear, opening onto a decked balcony with glass panels and stainless steel handrails, overlooking the walled courtyard garden. The garden has outside furniture, chiminea, a water feature and garden art. Nearby, Bovey Castle in a magnificent setting, has excellent golf, fine dining and bistro. National Trust Castle Drogo is a few miles away and many other attractions and beauty spots are within easy travelling distance. Dartmoor has so much to offer, rugged tors and beautiful landscapes, quaint villages and river walks. There are the famous Dartmoor ponies and Highland cattle grazing with sheep on the open moor, many good pubs as you tour around and tea rooms so you can experience the Devon Cream Tea! You will never tire of the scenery, sunsets and peaceful locations, visitors often return again and again and find new treasures each time. About Wendy Head

We are Mark, Wendy & Ellie and we live on Dartmoor in Devon with our hens and ducks. We owned holiday cottages in a nearby village for 12 years, then took a break to bring up our daughter. We had the opportunity to purchase property in Rock, Cornwall which have been successful as holiday rentals. We have now converted the barn which was the site of the original Manor House before it burnt down. It has a 'home from home' feel which is important so you can relax and enjoy your holiday. We have added things we have collected over the years to make it feel homely for our guests. If you wish to plan a two centre holiday we aim to provide short breaks at both location except in high season.

We are nearby if needed but Cowshed has a private garden giving full seclusion for relaxation.

Why Wendy Head chose Mid Devon

We have lived on Dartmoor for many years and love the countryside, walks and the relaxed way of life. There is something for everyone, walking, cycling, sightseeing, National Trust property and access to the coast is within an hour.

The Cowshed was converted during 2014 so provides a modern living space in a character building with lovely country views and a peaceful setting.

A real get away from it all location yet still providing great places to eat and many places to visit.

Cosmopolitan Exeter with its cathedral and beautiful old buildings, some still housing high street shops, is well worth a visit.

What makes this barn unique

We are conveniently located between Moretonhampstead and Chagford, both thriving moorland villages with lots going on. There are good pubs and restaurants, range of local shops, swimming pools and a sports centre and immediate access to the moor.

We can provide guests with local knowledge of where to go, especially the little gems that locals keep to themselves! Riding, fishing, cycling, shooting and many other activities can be accessed locally and if we know what you would like to do we can source some information for you and even book activities. Some bikes available, do please ask.

The beaches at Teignmouth and Torbay are within a hour's drive, a little further are the stunning beaches and resorts of the South Hams, Dartmouth and Salcombe, Bigbury well worth a day trip.

We have had a lovely break in this beautiful setting.The barn and grounds are perfect, beautiful and secure. Our girls have loved being able to run, play and climb trees. In a busy and stressful life this place has been a breath of fresh air where we have felt still, peaceful and happy. What a beautiful place! We will definitely be back in the future. K family.

The Cowshed can easily accommodate small families with use of the sofa bed and screens, or can provide a welcome retreat for two. Whether you like walking, cycling, riding, dining out, sightseeing or just relaxing away from it all – the Cowshed and Dartmoor has something for everyone. A special place where you instantly unwind and get into the slower pace of life. The Cowshed has a home from home feel, is spacious, and fully equipped for a relaxing holiday. Chagford nearby provides individual shops and boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Both Moretonhampstead and Chagford have open air swimming pools in summer, excellent gym and sports centre in Moretonhampstead, open all year. Local shops provide for all the essentials and more and supermarkets will deliver here. We do not allow dogs in the property, however we do have stables/sheds for dogs who are used to living outside. Horses by arrangement (extra). A non-smoking property.We are happy to offer short breaks in low and mid seasons, please enquire. Outside: The Cowshed has its own private walled garden, decked throughout with planters and bed of hostas surrounding the water feature. Wall art and chiminea for autumn evenings, table and chairs and sunloungers for lazy days. The courtyard is an incredibly sunny spot and enjoys sun into the early evening. The last of the sun can be accessed from the first floor balcony for an evening drink or al fresco meal. There is ample parking on the main driveway and from the bedroom to the front of the property you have lovely country views and can watch our hens and ducks enjoying Sloncombe life. Occasionally you can see deer and other wildlife in the paddock opposite. We are surrounded by fields and farm land in a small hamlet, a truly peaceful place yet not far from the village for essentials. There are walks directly from the property if you choose to leave the car at The Cowshed for a change. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The Cowshed is cleaned thoroughly after each rental period. Bedding (duvets, pillows) provided, linen for main bed is included, sofa bed linen extra.

Ideal accommodation to explore Dartmoor

We have no hesitation in reinforcing the other highly positive reviews for this well designed and spacious accommodation. We had a lovely relaxing stay within picturesque surroundings. The property is decorated to a very high standard, it is spotlessly clean, comfortable and has all the amenities required to enhance a visit to the gateway of Dartmoor. Wendy and Mark are exemplary hosts who have an excellent knowledge of the area and they made us feel truly welcome throughout our stay.

Superb cottage in a great location

This is a detached building renovated to a very high standard. It's in a very peaceful location yet just a few minutes drive from friendly Moretonhampstead which has shops, pubs, restaurants (lovely pizzas at Berto's). It is close to some lovely National Trust properties and great walks on the moor. We really appreciated all the thought that has gone into the provision of all the basics plus extras like Broadband, ample storage, balcony with furniture overlooking a nice courtyard garden, log-burner with fuel provided.

All this and lovely owners too. Highly recommended.

Everything you could ask for in a home from home

We had a wonderful stay here over the Christmas and New Year period.

The Cowshed was beautifully decorated. Had all the necessary white goods - washing machine/tumble dryer combo, and dishwasher making the holiday additionally effortless. Kitchen cooking utensils are very well provided for.

The bathroom is a clean and modern wet room.

The log burner kept the two floors wonderfully warm and cozy, despite frost and ice outside. Logs, kindling, and fire lighters provided!

The hosts were very helpful and welcoming, but by no means imposing.

I very much look forward to staying there again in the very near future.

Beautiful! Pure quality.

What a gem! This was a surprise gift of a few days away for my daughters/son in law after their wedding. They loved it! Very inviting when they arrived, the log burner had been lit and they allowed us to decorate with banners and balloons etc, they even hung some beautiful lights for them too. Good quality fittings, squeaky clean and Wendy was so lovely and helpful, It feels like we've made a new friend. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this lovely holiday home.

Perfect holiday

Such a fantastic property in a peaceful and beautiful location. Made very welcome by the owners. A perfect base for exploring the National Park, the pretty villages and the larger towns. Some excellent places to eat in nearby Moretonhamstead. Really friendly vibe. So much to see and do and would love to return as 10 days flew by way too fast.

Highly recommended.

The property was in a lovely setting. It was very well equipped and beautifully presented. Wendy and Mark were very welcoming and have wealth of knowledge regarding the area. There are lots of lovely walks and cycle routes to try out as well as great places to eat. A great location to explore both the national park and the coast. Will definitely recommend it to family and friends and would love to return another time.

Booking Notes: Please note that if your dates span two rate periods the rate quoted may be incorrect, please contact me for an accurate quote.
A deposit of 25% is required to secure your stay, the balance to be paid no later than 8 weeks of the commencement of your holiday. The deposit is non-refundable unless we are able to re-let the property if you have to cancel your holiday. We strongly recommend that you take out cancellation insurance as a minimum.

Changeover Day:
Thursday but flexible, we welcome short breaks but may limit this in high season. We aim to accommodate where we can and can provide a two centre approach if you wish to take advantage of our Cornwall properties too. Please enquire and we will try to help

Notes on prices:
We try to be flexible on arrival/departure dates, please do enquire. Two or three nights break are charged at 70% of the weekly rental, 4 nights at 75%, and 5 nights at 80%. Additional linen available for sofa bed at £12 per set.
Electricity and a basket of logs is included.
Dogs who can live outside and horses by arrangement, price to be agreed at time of enquiry.
