2015 will be our 12th season running the 2 gites & luxury B&B that we have created in our home. We have owned property in France since 1989, so know the country (& its food & wine..)well. We have spent our lives travelling the world - working in the Middle East & Africa as well as throughout the UK Home Counties & Europe. John has an Medical, Computer & Telcomms engineering background & Penny has worked as a radiographer for over 30yrs - mainly in Neurology - CT & MRI scanning. When we are not tending to the needs of our guests we love to travel - currently we enjoy exploring Italy, South Africa & the US. We have a passion for food - both cooking & eating, & love to discover new flavours & ideas , which we hope we are able to transmit into our diverse breakfast menu.
Penny Hitchings purchased this villa in 2004
Over the last 25yrs we have owned property in Normandy & the Cote d'Azur, but above all we love living in the unspoilt Charente region with its quiet peaceful roads, rolling hills & farmland & especially the wide choice of restaurants in the region of France - something for everyone....whether you are looking for sporting activities - cycling, swimming, tennis, walking or just chilling out with a good book & a glass of wine, La Betoulle provides the perfect location to Escape, Relax & Unwind. The summers are long & hot, the winters can be mild... the coast is not too far for a day trip & the towns of Limoges & Angouleme are within an easy drive + the beautiful city of Bordeaux is an easy day trip. Cognac can be reached within an hour & Futuroscope is popular with guests of all ages.
The joy of staying with us at La Betoulle is that all our properties are set apart from each other & every property & B&B suite benefits from outdoor space. Some guests never leave the estate, others are out & about all day & every day. There is a vast pool & private tennis court on site surrounded by beautiful, quiet countryside, but the busy village of St Claud is just 1km away. We offer secure off-road parking & the grounds are so vast you are free to be as sociable as you want - there is always someone around to talk to, to help solve a problem or organise an activity/restaurant for you but we are never intrusive. The overall feeling is of space to Escape, Relax & Unwind. As we also offer B&B we are happy to welcome guests to enjoy our buffet breakfast in the manoir.
from Trip Advisor 2014:
I have stayed with my family for the last 7 years in the family gite in the grounds of this exquisite manor house. The hosts Penny and John Hitchings are attentive and unobtrusive, providing a welcome pack of food and drinks along with little "treats" on an almost daily basis (melt in the mouth chocolate brownies, home made ice creams, macaroons, etc). there is a huge on-site swimming pool and a hard tennis court, also table tennis and giant outdoor chess. I have struggled to tear my family away at times to discover the rich variety the area has to offer, if you need to know, Penny has every answer. Tennis coaching has been arranged with a charming local tennis coach and this year my two girls have produced the most marvellous pastel pictures under the tutoring of a local artist literally 5 minutes down the road, arranged, naturally through Penny.
There are beautiful chamber d'hôte rooms in the manor, including a family suite, there is a massive terrace overlooking the pool and gardens for picnicking in the evenings with a glass of the local rose (just ask Penny)
I have never stayed in the B+B but have met loads of guests who have and it is unequivocally highly recommended.
I am sad not to be able to take up "my week" in what would have been my eighth year but have unmovable work commitments. If you are thinking of visiting this special place, do.
My best friend loves Manoir La Betoulle for years and I was lucky enough to spend last week there with her and our families. Just wonderful. Penny and John are wonderful hosts and the facilities are just perfect. We had the most peaceful fun week can't wait to go back. We stayed in both Gites which was a great combination for us so we could go between the two. Ideal for families, couples and friends.
As a family we have stayed in the Manoir, La Tiede and this year for the second time Le Petit Bois! Penny and John could not have made us anymore welcome from the arrival pack to the help during our stay in exploring new places of interest on our first visit without our children! Nothing is ever too much trouble and Penny's breakfasts are legendary! It would be very difficult to find anywhere that compared to La Betoulle whether in the Manoir or the gites. We will be back!

This is the tenth year in succession that we have stayed here. Prior to coming here we had never been to the same place twice - apart from Venice - but even with Venice we always stayed at somewhere different each visit. At La Betoulle we think it is going to be impossible to better the warmest of welcomes, the tranquility of the surroundings and the ambience of the delighful rooms. Penny's breakfast are stuff of legend and you won't find a better breakfast - where everything is home-prepared and/or home grown - anywhere in France. What else can we say but we are already booked in for next year, just juggling with the dates. Cannot recommend highly enough.
This is the tenth year that we have stayed here. Up until we first came here we had never been to the same place twice (apart from Venice), always thinking that new horizons would be more interesting and would provide a never-ending source of things to see and do. How wrong one can be..? When you start to get to know a place well you find all sorts of hidden gems and things that a cursory visit will never reveal. Over the years we have probably spent the best part of four months here, in total, and we will never tire of the peace and tranquility, nor the incredible hospitality provided by our hosts Penny and John. In the surrounding area there are numerous places to see and visit; numerous great eating places in which to submerse oneself, as well as the entire cognac region on your doorstep - and the more one digs around there the more treaures you can find - but that is a whole new story... (But ignore the big cognac houses and seek out some of the 400 or so smaller producers who bottle their own product). What higher recommendation can one give a place than to say that it has completely transformed the way we think about our travel plans, transformed the way that we plan our holidays and transformed the way we think about so many things? It also has what we consider to be the best restaurant anywhere (La Grange aux Oies) the one against which we compare every other restaurant we visit wherever we are in the world. We cannot recommend this place highly enough.
A gite in lovely grounds. Very helpful hosts, who were there if required but not intrusive. Nothing was too much trouble for them. All facilities were spotlessly clean. Swimming pool was large and very welcome after a day's sightseeing in the lovely surrounding area. We found it a quiet retreat in an interesting location which we would certainly recommend to those new to travelling in France, or the more seasoned Francophile. English TV and radio was a bonus....Nice to be able to keep up to date with The Archers!
We have just returned home from our 10 day honeymoon and can honestly say this was the perfect place to stay. The description and photos on the website do not do justice to this idyllic gite. The setting is second to none and the accommodation certainly has the wow factor. Penny and John are perfect hosts - nothing was too much trouble. The welcome hamper of goodies were very much appreciated and the home made treats were delicious! Our hosts offered a lot of help and advice to us as we are moving to the area later this year. There is lots of information on the local area - attractions/restaurants etc. We would certainly highly recommend to our family and friends.
Actually, five stars are not enough for this amazing and beautiful Manoir.
We have stayed here three times in the last four years each time in La Teide. Last year because there were guests staying a couple of days longer in La Tiede, We had the opportunity to sample Penny and John's B & B and wow, we were, in modern prose, 'blown away'! What sumptuous accommodation and what wonderful breakfasts.
My wife and I have holidayed in France for many years now and I can honestly say that Manoir la Betoile is the best B & B in France.
Then to follow that with the rest of the week in La Tiede was the icing on the cake.
I have enjoyed several years of holiday bliss staying with my wife and two daughters in La Tiede.
The give is extremely well appointed and Penny's superb welcome pack of treats and supplies makes settling in ever easier.
The grounds of the Manoir are beautiful with a fantastic pool, tennis court and outdoor chess set for whiling away the long summer days.
It has been almost impossible to extract my family from this outstanding place but we have visited Futuroscope several times along with Vallee des Singes and local towns of La Rochefoucauld for the chateau (and chocolatier) Oradour, Limoges and Angouleme. Penny and John are THE mine of information if you want to go out, they have a comprehensive knowledge of the area, tailored to your requirements and a personally compiled up to date restaurant guide is on hand, however I have only managed to persuade my family to go out to dinner once in 7 years (Kirstys, great local steak) as the lure of the terrace at La Tiede has always been too great.
My children have enjoyed tennis coaching on site by Philippe, the local pro and art classes by Jocelyn at her beautiful local home.
Nothing is too much trouble for Penny and John they have great attention to detail, I would recommend this property without reservation.
