About the property

Converted farmhouse in Herly, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France. - Quiet Village Location 50km from Calais

"19" is a tastefully renovated fermette. The original barns and stables of the farmhouse have been converted into spacious fully self contained holiday accommodation.

Ideal for families, packages can also be arranged for groups and for special occasions

The gite can sleep up to 12 people in 4 en suite rooms Each room has a single and double bed with space for the addition of a cot if needed.

The living area includes a spacious lounge, fully equipped kitchen and laundry. The enclosed garden is safe for young children and includes a patio, decking area and BBQ.

A welcome pack of essentials is provided for all self catering guests but if you need something in particular please let us know and we will try our best to obtain this for you.

A continental buffet style breakfast and a three or four course evening meal which includes all drinks, can be provided at an additional cost, when the owners are on site and must be requested at least 24 hours in advance.

Packed lunches and lighter options are also available on request.

Bread and croissants can be pre ordered from the local boulangerie and delivered fresh to your door each morning.


All rooms are on the ground floor and have ramp access but the en suite bathrooms are not wheelchair accessible.

House rules:

The rooms are non smoking (smoking is allowed outside) and sorry we are unable to cater for pets with the exception of assistance dogs.

Children must be supervised at all times around the porperty and when using the outdoors equipment

Guests are asked to avoid entering the chained off areas around the property.

Quiet time is between 10pm and 7am

Local shops, bars and restaurants are within easy reach but due to it's rural location, a car is essential.

Interesting property, rural location, great w/e

An interesting property, full of character and steeped in history, in a remote rural location. A great setting for a long weekend for three generations of our family.

The former stables have been converted into four identical ensuite bedrooms, each with a double and single bed, opening on to a covered verandah facing the garden (with trampoline, sandpit and patio), and a field of cows beyond. The verandah is open on one side to the garden. And a great place for young children to play on scooters etc., even if it is raining.

The bedrooms were each separately lockable, and although accessed from a covered verandah and covered walkway from the living / dining space were not quite in the same building. My wife and I didn't feel comfortable with our young children sleeping separately from us given the rooms are not internally connected, so we slept separately, each with a child. A door between two of the rooms would be a helpful modification from our perspective!

At the end of the verandah the barn has been converted into a large living / dining space with a sofa area (complete with TV), and two separate dining tables. It is ornately decorated with tapestries and coats of arms on the walls, and furnished with various sideboards and a drinks trolley. At the end a kitchen and separate utility room are well-equipped: gas oven and hob, additional electric oven, dishwasher, microwave, double sink, washing machine, dryer, fridge, additional large fridge freezer, etc.

Although remote, Herly provided a good base for cycling on the many nearby quiet roads and for exploring nearby places. Here’s a brief summary of the places we visited in case of use to future visitors.

• Le Touquet – a lovely upmarket seaside town with many nice restaurants, 45 mins drive away, recommend Le Matisse for lunch.

• Boulogne’s aquarium is well worth a visit - great wet weather plan ;.

• Montreuil, a delightful old city – recommend Le Pot du Clape

Mike and Patsy were delightful hosts: caring and attentive but gave us our own space. They provided a lovely welcome basket (sparkling wine, cake, croissants, milk, orange juice, biscuits, freshly laid eggs) and were a fount of local knowledge for any questions we had. They kindly provided age-appropriate toys for our young children which was much appreciated.

Our thanks to Mike and Patsy for being such great hosts, and for a lovely long weekend. We had a very enjoyable and memorable visit.

Fantastic place for a family holiday

A party of four of us have recently spent a long weekend (3 nights) here, and what a place it is! Most importantly, everywhere was spotlessly clean. The refurbishment of the living area and bedrooms has been done to a very high standard, and there's everything to make our holiday comfortable. The big garden is suitable for children of all ages, there's an undercover games area, a barbecue, and verandahs at the front and back. The relaxation area with the big sofa and armchairs has a big TV with hundreds of English channels, and a huge log burner (everything needed was supplied). The kitchen has a full-size double sink, microwave, coffee machine (with pods supplied), toaster, dishwasher and plenty of cutlery and crockery. The utility room contains another (larger) fridge-freezer, washing machines, tumble dryer, iron, trouser press - the list seems endless!

The four bedrooms are completely separate to the living area, and each has its own toilet and shower (very powerful and with endless hot water). The beds were really comfortable and the rooms were quite spacious.

The location is superb too - right in the countryside, reasonably close to Calais, but not too far from fast roads. We visited Le Touquet, Boulogne-sur-Mer, we fell in love with Montreuil and a couple of their restaurants, and it's only about 10 minutes to Hucqueliers, where there's a boulangerie, supermarket (with 24-hour petrol), and an Auberge restaurant (English-speaking owner).

The owners, Mike and Patsy, were superb hosts. Nothing was too much trouble for them - Mike helped me with lighting the log burner, answered my endless questions about "where is the nearest..." and "can you recommend..." There was a bottle of Champagne as part of the welcome too, and biscuits, instant coffee, tea... and Mike asked us if we'd like him to get anything from the local shop so it was ready for when we arrived (at our expense, of course)!

A note of caution - if you are visiting during the colder weather, as we did, keeping warm is a bit challenging. The bedrooms each have an electric fan

heater, and the living area has two electric radiators as well as the log burner. However, once in bed under the duvets, we were all as warm as toast.

We all had a great time staying here, and we thoroughly recommend it. There is so much to see and do in this area of France, I've no doubt that we will be revisiting Mike and Patsy again. We wish them continued success - they thoroughly deserve it

Lovely, relaxing break after Eurodisney trip

Wonderful, spacious, beautifully decorated farmhouse for a relaxing family holiday. Very thoughtfully, the owners had left plenty of activities for the children - games, trampoline, purpose-built sand pits. This was more comfortable than most other French gites we have stayed in.

Owners were warm and welcoming but gave us the space we needed.

Super value for money - typically French style with British comfort!

Thoroughly enjoyable stay

We stayed here as a 3 generation family. 4 adults and 3 children (13, 11 and 5) Peaceful, quiet surroundings for the adults and there was a lot for the grandchildren to do……table football, Boules, trampoline, darts, table tennis, sandpit and lots of space to kick a ball about. They loved it so much that our 5 yrs. old granddaughter didn’t want to leave when it came to going home.

The house is well equipped with cooker, fridge, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine and drier and even a barbecue.

All the bedrooms had comfortable beds and en suite. The living room is huge which gives the family room to spread. There is a lovely patio/decking with tables and chairs where you can enjoy breakfast or lunch.

Mike and Patsy are great hosts and live next door with their lovely dog Tilly and 2 chickens. They are very helpful when asked but allow you your privacy at all other times.

We would recommend this holiday home to anyone, whether all adults or a big family with children.

Brilliant Holiday

Had a great time on our first holiday with our three month old son. Mike and Patsy made us very welcome and were very helpful in fixing a slight problem with the washing machine we had. Property highly recommended for a quiet family holiday.

A gem of a place.

We visited as three couples, and our visit was to celebrate the Diamond Wedding Anniversary of one of the couples. We did that in the very nice surroundings of the Auberge de Hucquelliers. The food was excellent and also very reasonably priced.

The Maison de Monsieur Scarecrow accommodation is very unusual in that the four bedrooms run off a covered veranda, much in the manner of 1960s/1970s Motels. Each room has both a double and a single bed, and it's own toilet and shower facilities and even it's own very efficient hot water system. This makes the accommodation extremely versatile. The beds are comfortable and the furnishing attractive.

The living accommodation is extremely spacious, with a well-equipped kitchen, a utility room and a huge lounge/dining room, with a large, flat-screen TV with UK Freesat channels (this failed during our visit, but I am sure that this will be rectified in pretty short order).

The owners, Patsy and Mike are a charming couple, who are very unobtrusive at all times other than if you need any help. Mike even went the extra mile and ferried us to and from the auberge on the evening of the wedding anniversary, which allowed me to have a drink. I made the most of the opportunity. Thanks for that, Mike!

We will certainly visit again, and I would recommend this accommodation for virtually any age group, or a social group of any sort.
