Ideal house for three generations

  • 4 of 5

Booked this house because it was the ideal configuration to accommodate three generations of the family to celebrate our golden wedding. Our three family party consisted of seven adults and four children so a dining table that could seat 14 people was a real treat. The large open plan lounge/dining area was the living hub of this property and afforded magnificent views over Windermere towards the Furness Fells (weather permitting).

All the rooms were tastefully furnished and the five bathrooms meant that there were no queues in the morning. However, storage heaters for all the living areas and timed immersion heaters for hot water did mean a few cool baths for the children before we conquered the intricacies of the booster switches.

The location of Staddlestones requires a car journey to the nearest shops and is quite a walk to a bus stop. Parking is difficult in Bowness so for large family shopping it is better (and cheaper) to head to Kendal or Greenodd for the super-markets.

Our stay in late October was not blessed by fine days and sunshine but then this is the Lake District. A warm summer's evening on the balcony after a day on the fells must be heaven.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and Staddlestones helped to make it a special occasion.

Photos don't do it justice

  • 4 of 5

Great house for 14/16 people. Good location, although no pubs within walking distance. Good coffee machines and plenty of large cooking pots. Bedrooms on multiple floors and steps to everything - would not suit people with mobility issues. View from the main living/dining room and balcony over to the lake and the hills beyond is wonderful. One range cooker with main over, side oven and grill - the side over was working when we were there. Only one dishwasher but seems to have quite a quick cycle so washing up for large number can be done in two batches. Log fire lovely to sit around on comfortable red leather sofas but you need to buy your own wood, kindling supplied - and don't forget the matches! Wifi is slow and not always available. We had a wonderful walk, drove to nearby ferry, walked to Far Sawrey, pub lunch in Cuckoo Brow (excellent) and back to the ferry. The two bedrooms on the lower floor were cooler than the rest but there were fan heaters available and a hot water bottle :) Make sure you follow the instructions for turning on the water heaters - there's an art to getting them to work..... 2 bedrooms on lower ground share a bathroom, two bedrooms on middle floor share a bathroom and three bedrooms on the top floor are ensuite. An excellent weekend had by all

Superb property catering for larger parties. Location in prime position for visiting the majority of the Lakes. Although the nearest town (Bowness on Windermere) was not walkable a mere 10 minutes in the car was acceptable to taste the delights of the local coffee shops, pubs and restaurants and possible catch the ferry to view the spectacular scenery.

All rooms within the house are of adequate size and functioned very well. The kitchen area was spacious and there were more than enough pans, casserole dishes to cater for our party of 16 whilst staying there. Clean Bedlinen / towels provided. My only fault was the weather. Poured down all weekend. Shame we were not able to sip Gin n Tonic on the terrace and take in the scenery. Highly recommend.

Great house for a large group of people, if a little tired

  • 4 of 5

The house location is great, 40 minute stroll to Bowness. Views are fab from the balcony. The seating/dining/kitchen area is a great social space. Lots of fridge space, which was great.

The bedrooms are all a good size, with some large rooms. One room does have an opening onto one of the utility areas, which is a bit odd. The house is looking a bit tired, quite a few marks on the walls and things missing (our toilet flush had half the flusher misisng). Hopefully the oven will have been repaired so that they work.

The hot water ran out each day, and only 1 person can have a shower at a time as the water pressure can’t cope with more. The heating is supplied via night storage heaters, which once they get going keep the house very warm.

All in all, it’s a great house for a group of friends, and we had a fab time.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. With regard to the house being "tired" etc, the whole property was decorated at the beginning of the season. It is impossible to do any decorating during the peak holiday seasons as the house is occupied the whole time. Unfortunately some guests do not look after the property and so there are always marks on the walls, even a week after decoration! Things like toilet flushes have to be replaced on a regular basis and we do our best to keep up. The oven - this has been tested since your stay - We found that all the rings worked perfectly, the large oven also works fine. The small oven does seem to have an intermittent fault. We have ordered the parts for this. We have noticed that when people feel the oven does not work well it is because people are not always used to cooking for larger numbers and forget to take into account that a meal for 16 will take longer to cook due to the volume of food in the oven. The hot water has 3 different tanks, all of which have a "boost" function. Again, as at home (for those who have immersion heaters) this takes an hour to heat the water back up. We have never had a complaint about lack of water pressure before and certainly haven't noticed it when our family have stayed. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay over all.

Great family house in fact much nicer than the photos portray...only slight downside was no logs for the woodburner but this was an oversight
