Eco and back friendly modern house, amazing views from all rooms, by Dunvegan

Updated: 05-Dec-2016
House overlooking Loch Dunvegan, Skinidin, near Dunvegan, Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands, Scotland - Architect designed warm and airy, underfloor heating, comfy beds, wood burning stove & all mod cons

Whether it's a great location from which to explore the many outdoor activities that Skye has to offer or the more genteel art and craft trails, or indeed a place to relax, unwind and simply watch from a comfy chair the ebb and flow of the loch shore, 'The Backrest' is the house for you.

(And you may be able to bring your small/medium well behaved dog subject to prior agreement :) - see below).

Please note that we do the change over on a SATURDAY therefore the first and last day of your stay must be a Saturday.

The Backrest has been built to incorporate the latest Eco-technology and is modern living through its furnishings and equipment to an exceptionally high standard. The influence of a Danish, chiropratic owner is most definitely evident in the overall interior design and quality of all things to sit or lie on - you won't be able to blame us for any bad backs and are more likely to want to know where you can buy things because they're just so comfortable!

To the front of the house, the visible life on the shore loch always brings a smile - seals are commonplace to see although we sometimes wish they'd get the ball and hoops out to give more of a show! Otters also inhabit the loch but our spaniels mean we're unlikely to see them but hopefully you'll have more luck, and the bird life is prolific. Sheep have open grazing by the loch and feast on the shore line. It's easy to spend a relaxing day in the house whatever the weather - although a warm house, you can always light the wood burner and watch from inside. For any artist it's a great spot from which to put brush to canvas or for photographers to capture the stunning views.

Alternatively we are perfectly placed to explore the island and there's plenty of space to dry out those walking boots and waterproofs if needed. Four out of the five peninsulas on Skye are within just a 20minute drive (Minginish, Warternish, Trotternish and we're in Duirinish). The furthest away is Sleat in the south of Skye but we recommend to make it a day trip and possibly combine it with taking the ferry to Mallaig on your way home but we are only talking c 45mins away!

Our proximity to Uig also means that Harris with its world famous tweed and the very beautiful Luskenytre Beach (in the world's Top 10 beaches) are a possibility if you want to venture further but with access to great walks (for all abilities), biking (on and off road) stunning views, sea life, flora and fauna of all descriptions, wild life, fishing, golf, natural and man-made historic sites, great food and Skye beer or Talisker whisky on the door step, it's hard to see why you would!

Walking on Skye doesn't have to be in the challenging Black Cuillins. There are plenty of walks for all ages and paw sizes - Frida and Floyd (our 2 cocker spaniels) have left you details of their favourites and so have we.

If being on the water is more your thing, the many jetties including our nearest at Colbost mean you can launch anything from a kayak to a small dinghy. Alternatively if it's just watching the water that you're in to the sightings of dolphins, porpoises, basking sharks are seen frequently around the island. The outdoors also inspires much of the arts and crafts produced locally and there are well routed tours on each of the peninsulas so you can stop off at the galleries and enjoy the art with coffee and homemade cake.

After a great day out we think you need the option of a great night in and whilst there are many fabby places to eat very close by, notably The Three Chimneys just a walk away, we've kitted out the kitchen so you can prepare your own feast. There are lots of places to either catch or buy your own seafood and we've left lots of "local knowledge" details in the house to help you. The largest recorded catch in the UK was made off Skye - please don't bring back a 208lb skate to gut on the dining table!

After a busy or relaxed day a great night's sleep is guaranteed. The combi of comfy beds, no light pollution and just nature's sounds will mean you are well rested unless of course it's the light show of the Aurora Borealis keeping you awake.

Completed in December 2014, our location combines the old and the new - just a few metres from the eco and back friendly modern take on the traditional croft buildings are the walls of the original "winter croft". We've taken great care to preserve the remains and integrity of those who lived there before us out of respect for the Glendale crofters whose efforts helped persuade Prime Minister William Gladstone to establish a commission that would transform the lives of thousands of people working the land.

It's a pleasure to share our Hebridean home with you and subject to notification and our agreement BEFORE your stay, one small/medium well behaved dog. Please advise us on your booking enquiry if you want to bring your furry friend because house rules do apply which need your sign off. We charge an additional £50 refundable deposit if we agree to your dog staying at The Backrest.

We're sure you'll all fall in love with The Backrest and have a holiday to remember.

Fantastic Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most fantastic vacation on the Isle of Skye and this wonderful cottage had perfect views and all the amenities you could imagine. We experienced all weathers during our stay and loved coming home to a hot bath, warm towels and a fire. I am so glad we picked this house over staying in in one of the larger towns like Portree. We would stay here again in a heartbeat! Thank you for sharing this spectacular home! 5 Stars!

Couldn't have asked for more!! Everything was perfect, from the setting and spectacular view, to the little things like a vegetable peeler and music system. The house was immaculate when we arrived, we found everything well described on how to use, the beds were very comfortable and there was ample comfortable living room seating for lounging in the evening. The owners were very responsive at all times, not that we needed them much, because everything was already thought out by them. Even reminding us about the fishmonger who comes by on Wednesday mornings with fresh fish for sale. Perfect! we bought some Salmon from him and had a delicious meal from that suggestion.

We took their suggestion to shopping in town before we got the the "Backrest" which was good advice and ate several meals at the Old Schoolhouse. We tried to make a reservation at Three Chimneys Restaurant but found that even in late October you need to make a reservation at least 2 weeks in advance. Oh well!

Our days were spent walking on some of the many short walks of 2 to 5 km each, like out to Neist Point, or to Ardmore on the Waternish Penninsula, or to see the Old Man of Stor, and finally to the Cullins to see the Fairy Pools.

We arrived after dark and did have a some difficulty finding the house, it was overcast and there is no light pollution on Skye so I would stongly recommend arriving before dark the first night, after that it's easy! I should have taken the hint about bringing a torch after dark! We used our phones "torch".

Because the house is so wide open to the amazing surroundings one is made so much more aware of the dramatic weather and sky that surrounds you on the Isle of Skye. The Island itself is rugged and amazingly beautiful for those of us who enjoy the great outdoors and nature at it's finest. We could not have been happier with our choice of the "Backrest" and thank Mette and Sonia for thinking of everything; well done and Thank you.

Owner's Response: Hello Alison Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a long (and very nice) review. Sounds like you had an amazing time :) Yes, Skye is very good for star gazing but not for trying to find somewhere in the dark.....Luckily you had the torch function on your phones! A shame you didn't get a chance to try 'The 3 Chimney's Restaurant' but then again......It's always good to leave something for the next visit;) Hope to see you back.

Amazing house

  • 5 of 5

We were fortunate to enjoy good weather whilst staying in a superbly comfortable and well equipped house with lovely views.

Skinidin is a bit isolated but this adds to the experience. Be prepared to cook evening meals as sensibly priced restaurants are few and far between. Having said that the Backrest was fully equipped with everything you might need.

A great experience helped by the good weather and lack of midges

Owner's Response: Pleased you enjoyed your stay and your your home cooked meals;) Hope you bought some fresh fish from John the Fishmonger who comes to the house on a Wednesday morning. We find it is well worth getting up for. Yes, The 3 Chimneys Restaurant is expensive but great for a special occasion. We also like 'The Old School House' in Dunvegan and The Red Roof Cafe in Glendale for meals out. Great food and very affordable.

Superb house and location

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much for creating the backrest. We LOVED our time spent here and have been discussing a return trip already. The view and the seals were amazing and the garden was so good for our dog as we didn't have to worry about her running on the road or chasing the sheep.

We have visited Skye a few times in the past and we have always loved it but this visit was made all the more special by your beautiful house (this visit we REALLY didn't want to leave).

The backrest has everything you could need (including board games, wine coolers beside the bath and a current collection of DVD's).

From the Owner

Our first visit to Skye was en route to Harris for just one night. Despite a half completed Quirang walk because of bad weather we instantly fell in love with the island which just looked stunning in the mist and rain. We looked at building on islands nearer to our home in Glasgow but kept being drawn back to Skye. Bizarrely whilst on holiday in Rio we saw the Skinidin plot for sale and the weekend after our return found ourselves walking on it and a few other for good measure. We hadn't agreed any criteria for selection so when our only dog at the time, Frida, went absolutely nuts, doing mad happy dog sprints it quite simply sealed the deal. Thanks to Frida, The Backrest is here today.

Nearest Airport : Inverness at 133 Miles Nearest Barpub : Old School Restaurant at 3.3 Miles Nearest Ferry : Armadale at 55 Miles Nearest Golf : Isle of Skye Golf Course at 28 Miles Nearest Train : Kyle of Lochalsh at 48 Miles Nearest Restaurant : The Three Chimneys at 0.5 Miles Nearest Beach : Coral Beach at 5 Miles Car: necessary

Open the door, walk about 100 metres and you're on the shore line of Loch Dunvegan where you can cast your fishing rod or just mooch about and will most likely have seals for company.

Coral beach is a must. just stunning with the vibrant blue water and black rocks against the white beach. Nice circular walk here.

Tallisker beach with its grey sand looks fab agaist the dramatic cliffs. Visit at low tide or get here for amazing sunsets.

Access to Skye is either via the bridge at the Kyle of Localsh or, via ferry from ferry from Mallaig to the south of the island.

'The Backrest' is approximately a 45minute drive from the bridge or a 1hr 20min drive from landing in Armadale.

Further Details:

Skye maybe an island but it's most definitely not short on access to all the usual stuff you expect to find on the mainland. Groceries are easily accessible either via the exceptionally well stocked local stores in Dunvegan or Glendale where some of the fresh selections we consider to be even better than the supermarkets. If it's bigger stores you want, the Co-op at Portree or Broadford (which you'll pass en-route to the house) stock all of the usual suspects and have long opening hours. You won't go hungry or thirsty - the local store in Dunvegan has an unrivalled range of Scottish bottled beers, we know!
