About the property

Cottage near Craster, Northumberland, England , A Few Minutes From St Oswald S Way And Dunstanburgh Castle

The cottage dates from the 1800s and is in a row of five. They are nestled by the farmhouse at the end of a pretty tree lined drive. It has an old fashioned porch leading to a sitting room. The kitchen and bathroom are on the grounfloor and three bedrooms are upstairs with beautiful sea and countryside views. It is positioned in a prime spot for visiting Dunstanburgh castle, Embleton, Craster and Newton by the Sea, and the beautiful beaches there. The Jolly fisherman pub and Craster village is ten minutes walk to the South along the coastal path known as St Oswald s way and The Ship Inn at Newton by the Sea is a forty minute walk North along Embleton and Newton beach.

Dunstanburgh links golf course runs within 20 minutes walk of the cottage and Embleton village with it s amenities is 30 minutes inland and to the North. The beautiful and unusual Howick gardens are a five minute drive away and Alnwick is a further 10 minute drive.

Alnmouth station is a 15 minute drive away.

About The Owner

I an doctor living in Newcastle upon Tyne with my husband, who is also a doctor and our two youngest children.

We lived untilin London until 2007 before moving to Africa for a few years.

My husband is from Johannesburg.

I have close links with this stretch of the Northumbrian coastline and we wanted our children to be able to keep this connection.

The cottage is one of the old farm workers buildings that I used to visit as a child whilst staying with my grandparents on at Dunstan Steads.

I grew up in London but spent most holidays up at Newton by the Sea.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2015

Why The Owner chose Northumberland

This is a magical and timeless spot.

Off the beaten track it holds the potential for lovely memories.

Ancient monks and prehistoric folk walked here by the rocky whinstone ledges separating the land from the North sea.

The rocks are rugged and beautiful. On a warm day in summer the blue sky seems huge with the larks singing in the heavens.

The yellow gorse, green grass, white clouds and blue sky outbid each other for attention and are breath taking to see.

The North sea looks huge as it rolls into Embleton Bay and its colours change daily from blues to greens to greys.

There is ample wildlife to enjoy with nearby bird watching at Newton Pool and seal and puffin watching at the nearby Farne Islands.

This place is very special ..

What makes this cottage unique

The tranquillity and beauty of the house position is unique. This is a great place to walk and be near to the sea whilst slightly off the beaten track.

We appreciate being within walking distance of Craster and Dunstan where you can get some good food and in Craster the gallery is a pleasant visit.

The views for the upstairs windows are beautiful and you get a real sense of open space. The row of cottages are set quite high overlooking the surrounding fields and the ridge of gorse separating the land from the castle and seashore.

Lovely cottage, perfect for a short break

  • 4 of 5

Three of us spent the Easter weekend at Old Stone Cottage. The cottage provided a perfect base for walks with our two dogs along the coast and through the surrounding countryside. The coast line is spectacular and the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle make a beautiful backdrop. We only had two full days, but had a long walk along the beach at Seahouses, followed by fish and chips and a visit to the Ship Inn at Low Newton to sample the outputs of their microbrewery. Easter Sunday was spent walking round the lovely estate of Cragside - well worth a visit. The cottage was well equipped, with all we needed for our stay and being able to step straight out the door onto a selection of footpaths was wonderful. We spent the days out and the evenings in the cottage - although fine for us, a bigger party might find the sitting room a bit cramped.

Lovely location in the countryside with excellent walks on the doorstep. Great big kitchen and bedrooms. The facilities were easy to use - heating, cooker etc. Good value for money.

Good location- lovely views

  • 3 of 5

The initial impression was a little disappointing as the porch looked in poor repair. On accessing the property the downstairs was also a little disappointing with a very small and awkward sitting area. However the dining area with kitchen and the bathroom were lovely. The upstairs was beautifully presented with beautiful views over the countryside. An ideal property for dog lovers as it has good access to the beach and footpaths through the fields.

Owner's Response: We will be doing decorating work now that the season is low-the cottage is old and it needs regular superficial attention as it gets a lot of wear and tear. It should be back to standard in the next few weeks! We had to choose either a small sitting room or a small kitchen because of the layout and went for the former because there s nothing quite like going into a big sit down kitchen. The sitting room is snugly tucked away out of the way of the main entrance and exit keeping it warm and snug. It s a personal choice and hopefully works well under most circumstances.
