About the property

Detached 3 bedroom house in Mere, Wiltshire on the Dorset and Somerset borders - 10 Miles from Longleat, Free Wifi, 4 Bedroom house next door also available

The property is a lovely, comfortable, bright detached house in a quiet location overlooking open a park to the south. There is a small garden to the side of the house that is newly planted with climbing roses, honeysuckle and jasmines. Mere is located approximately 10 miles from Longleat, 25 miles from Bath, 20 miles west of Stonehenge and just over an hour's drive from north and south coasts at Weston Supermare and Bournemouth respectively. It is only an hour and a half drive from the M25. The area is ideally located for exploring Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. The countryside around Mere offers good walking, cycling, golfing and fishing. There are National Trust properties nearby, lovely scenery and beautiful quiet roads. A local gliding club offers flights and tuition. Public tennis courts and a children’s playground are only a 5 minute walk away.

About Douglas Clowser

Hi we are Alison and Doug. I am a Civil Engineer and Alison works in Architecture. We met when working together on a large project for the army centered around Salisbury Plain.

We sold my house in Surrey and moved to Wiltshire in 2012 and decided to buy a house to let as a holiday home so others could enjoy the same holidays we had.

Alison enjoys gardening and has planted many roses and climbing plants to brighten up the house and has planting plans to make the area even prettier.

I am interested in classic cars and have one myself that I enjoy using in the summer on the quiet local roads which allow a more sedate way of driving.

Douglas Clowser purchased this house in 2012

Why Douglas Clowser chose Wiltshire

I fell in love with this area on the Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset borders years ago when I used to bring my children here on holiday. We loved the beautiful scenery and quiet roads which are a welcome change from where I used to live within the M25.

Mere is a lovely old village that doesn't seem to have been discovered by too many tourists so is still peaceful in the summer, but surrounded by lots to do within an hour in any direction.

What makes this house unique

My grown up children still live in Surrey so the easy access to the A303 is very convenient for me and I can be back in Epsom within 90 minutes. It also gives superb access in to Somerset and on into Devon.

I used to take the children to Longleat when they were younger and it is only a short drive along country lanes from Mere.

I think one of the nicest things about staying in Mere is that you are not living in a tourist destination. Every day you can enjoy a quiet drive to somewhere of interest and then return to calmer surroundings in the evenings.

Lovely cosy cottage for a small family

  • 5 of 5

Cottage is bright and well equipped. Weather was dreadful when we stayed but we were warm and cosy indoors. Upstairs is rather creaky which means you have to tread carefully when tiptoeing out of the baby's room, but that was a minor issue.

Mere itself is a lovely village, usual combination of twee shops, wine merchant, decent sized co-op and some lovely churches.

Beautiful well kept property.

  • 5 of 5

I book a lot of accommodation for surveyors who are away for weeks at a time, this property is very well kept and the gentlemen that stayed commented on the homely feel.

The owner of the property (Douglas) is very helpful and kept in contact the entire time.

I would recommend this property and give it a 5 out of 5

Quiet and luxury place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We we a group of four freinds and have spent a wonderful time in Somerset. Our expectations of the holiday house in Mere based on the description were very high, however the reality has even exceeded them. Everything in the house was very precisely prepared for our arrival as promised by the owner. Unfortunately our daily plans were very demanding so we couldn't enjoy enough this nice quiet place in Mere during those days. There is nothing we would be unsatisfied except of the fact that it is too far from our home in Czech Republic to come more often...

Lovely house in a perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect. Clean, modern and well maintained. Fully equipped with all the things you will need. Doug and Alison even provided us with a travel cot and high chair for our 15 month old son.

Friendly welcome from Doug and a welcome pint of milk waiting for us in the fridge.

The house is in a perfect location to explore the surrounding areas. We visited Longleat, Peppa Pig World and Western-Super-Mare. All lovely days out.

Mere was a lovely little place with adequate amenities. The playing field and park area facing the house is perfect if you have a family.

We only ate out in one of the local pubs, The Walnut Tree Inn. It was lovely, I highly recommend the Sunday carvery. The local Chinese take away was very nice too.

Overall we would highly recommend this house to family and friends. We would most definitely return as a week was not long enough to explore the surrounding areas.

Great

  • 5 of 5

Ideal property, all facilities you need, well kept and well stocked. Clean upon arrival, particularly quiet and peaceful but within easy 5 minute walk to local amenities (shops, pubs, cafe, take away food etc.) check out the village wine merchants, and candle factory shop. Ideal base to visit all attractions of Wiltshire/Dorset/Somerset you may choose. Great holiday.
