About the property

Contemporary barn in rural Somerset nr Taunton - Peaceful location and very private, nr lots of facilities

Grace Barn is a newly rebuilt Victorian barn, set in an elevated and tranquil position on the edge of the Quantock Hills and surrounded by open farmland. Its large south and west-facing windows capture warmth and light all year round, and provide stunning views of Taunton Vale, the Blackdown Hills and the glorious sunsets. It is accessed over a stony farm track and is a long way from any busy roads - so you can enjoy a holiday free from traffic noise and breathe the clear Somerset air.

Patio doors open from both the living room and main bedroom onto a private terrace and veranda with sun loungers, a hanging 'dream chair', and an outdoor eating/barbecue area. Although the barn is annexed to the main house there is no interaction between the two, so you can come and go in private.

A couple of steps lead down to a small enclosed lawn and a track leading to the smallholding, orchard and meadows. This can also be reached without the use of the steps via a stony farm track. There is a small stream and wildlife pond (unfenced) which are frequented by our geese and wild ducks - water voles, newts and pole cats (!) have been spotted here as well as tawny owls, buzzards, dragonflies and numerous other species. We do everything we can to create a habitat for wildlife. *Young children would need to be supervised due to the presence of unfenced water and animals*

Our own chickens and bantams range freely around the smallholding and we sometimes have 'collective' pigs in the summer for fresh pork, and a tasty veg patch. Grace Barn has its very own little herb garden for the sole use of guests.

Grace Barn is situated in the tiny hamlet of Gotton just 1.5miles from the nearest food shop, and 3 miles from the County Town of Taunton, where there is an excellent shopping centre, cinema, bowling alley, swimming pool and plenty of really good restaurants and cafes.

The lovely Hestercombe Gardens and House are just a mile away by road, or enjoy the walk there on foot through fragrant bluebell woods, with the reward of good coffee or lunch when you get there.

Other nearby attractions include the West Somerset Steam Railway (20mins), Exmoor (1hr), Dunster and Minehead (1hr), Glastonbury, Wells and Clarkes Village retail outlet at Street (40mins), among others. South coast towns such as Lyme Regis and Sidmouth are less than an hour away, both of which are great for beaches, holiday shopping and eating, and the surfing beaches of North Devon 1.5 hours by car (Woolacombe, Croyde etc).

Grace Barn is well placed for access by rail or road, 10 minutes by taxi from Taunton’s mainline rail station (London Paddington 2 hours), and major road links (3 miles from the M5). Regional airports at Bristol and Exeter are within 1 hour and offer links to main airports across the UK and Europe. English Channel ferry ports are within easy reach.

About Rosie Tremain

Rosie Tremain's family have spent the last five years renovating their Victorian stone barn and creating a smallholding. We love creating our own food (veg patch, orchard, pigs, chickens...) and our own energy (solar and wood). We adore our big trees, our animals and our view, and love to share them with others. Informal hospitality is our thing - but we also give people the absolute privacy they need on holiday.

We both work at our own small businesses - at home Rosie upcycles and creates under the banner of Vintage Grace Home.

Rosie Tremain purchased this barn in 2009

Why Rosie Tremain chose Somerset

We fell in love with its location, the land, the trees, birds, wildlife and the view!

Amazing cottage in a wonderful setting

  • 5 of 5

Such a lovely, comfortable cottage situated perfectly down a tiny country lane, with amazing views from the living area and main bedroom. Nearby there is everything you may need from a town and the M5 leads you to so many varieties of days out. Rosie and Ian have supplied such a perfect cottage in a perfect setting, with everything you need for a day to day holiday home. Our children adored being there as did we. And cake on arrival is always a winner 🍰😀

This was one of the loveliest place I have ever had the pleasure to stay... I have a child with autism and he LOVED it here.. When we arrived we were welcome with a very tasty homemade raspberry cake made by Rosie! The apartment was simply stunning!!! And so was the view!. When we were there it rained 5 and a half days out of the 7 days.. But we still managed to get out and about to enjoy ourselves. Rosie felt so sorry for me she brought me a pair of wellies! Lol lol... We were only there for one night and booked for next year!! My children loved juicy and Lucy the geese wandering around the garden.. They also did an arts and craft class with Rosie with they throughly enjoyed!! My partner came and joined us half way through the week.. And even he was blown away! We managed to get away to the beach (which was about 50 mins away) and we had a lovely time there too.. Also I forgot to say Asda, Morrisons, lidl are not too far away... The city centre isnt far either. The Perfect location! We can't wait to come back next year!!! One the of best family holidays we have had to date.

Also my organisation has awarded Grace Barn an 'Autism Friendly Award' for outstanding service provided for autistic children and their families! Rosie was truly amazing with my son and my son felt so at home! it was just the perfect place! A little piece of paradise!!! Thank you so much Rosie!!!

Perfect family holiday!

  • 5 of 5

Simply stunning!

Grace Barn is just beautiful, very tastefully decorated and full of character and charm.

Tucked away from the busy town with beautiful scenes and plenty to see and do.

The barn is equipped with everything you could possibly need to take a family away from home, from hair dryers to toddler cutlery, washing line and pegs to board games and garden toys, we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay for a week!

Plenty of maps and visitor leaflets in the cottage to plan day trips out and supermarkets nearby to stock up for picnics, barbecues etc.

We can't find one negative thing to say about our stay at Grace Barn, you won't be disappointed!

Many thanks Rosie and Ian.

We loved it !!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Grace Barn for 2 weeks from 6th June 2015 - we loved every minute of it & would recommend it to anybody....we normally choose to stay away from the owners (not because we are party animals but because we like our privacy)...although Ian & Rosie were right next door they could of been miles away, such is the set up...the outside area is great to relax in with a drink or 2 and as we had our dog with us it was really practical too...the location for travelling to visit places is wonderful...we were out & about most days.

The property itself has everything you could want or need & was spotlessly clean on our arrival.

Stunning barn and beautiful location.

  • 5 of 5

We chose Grace barn for our family holiday (2 adults and 2 children) in May 2015. The barn was very easy to find within good reach of the motorway.

We were warmly welcome by Rosie and Ian and shown around the barn and were blown away with the standard of the barn and it's presentation. The barn also has all the facilities you would need during your stay (dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, freezer, wifi, etc).

The outdoor area is also to a high standard. Lovely patio area with loungers, outdoor table and chairs (which we made use of most evenings) and a nicely maintained garden. There is also access to separate play area which our 2 boys loved.

The barn is ideally located for a quiet sit on the balcony with a book or a glass of wine, the only noises you can hear are the birds in the trees. Taunton is just a few short miles away for any shopping needs and in around an hour there are lots of places to visit (Monkey World, Poole, Exmoor, Royal Navy Air Arm Museum, Bath & West Show to name just a few). Or if you prefer to stay closer to the barn Rosie holds craft classes which my partner loved.

We loved our stay at Grace Barn and couldn't recommend it highly enough. We will certainly be looking to book with Rosie and Ian again in the not too distant future.

Superb! Wonderful property and location.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Grace Barn for a week over Easter and couldn't have asked for more! We loved the property from the moment we arrived: a beautifully converted little barn with fantastic views over the surrounding countryside from the open-plan living area and the main bedroom. There has been lots of glass used in the design which floods the property with light; we were lucky enough to have great weather which meant we could open out the bi-fold doors onto the patio area.

Although the property is an annex to the main barn, approached by a shared courtyard, it has been cleverly converted to offer complete privacy. The patio area is not overlooked at all by the main house and there is also a small garden. Rosie and Ian were excellent hosts - there if we needed them but not at all intrusive.

Grace Barn is only a few miles from Taunton which means that, if you were only staying a weekend, you could come by train and get a taxi from the station. The wood burning stove is a great addition; if the weather had been bad we would have quite happily holed up for the day with a fire and a pile of books! There are also pleasant walks from the property itself, and a pub nearby, so more than enough to do locally on a short break.

With a week's stay, and a car, we were able to get out and about and explore the surrounding area which is beautiful. The North Somerset coast is less than an hour's drive away, as are Exmoor, to the west, and Glastonbury, to the east. We know the Dorset coast quite well so did not drive down there but, again, you could easily do so.

We can definitely recommend Grace Barn to others and hope to be back ourselves one day!
