About this property

Country House With Ancient Terraced Garden In Bargemon, Var, Provence, France

La Peirégoué was originally a "cabanon" where villagers rested after tending their orchard and vegetable garden. The house was progressively enlarged to its present size but it has retained its bucolic charm. We bought it 35 years ago mainly for the beauty of its old terraced garden on a fairly steep incline. It features an olive orchard, fig and cherry trees, a magnificent secluded swimming-pool, a pétanque strip, fountains and plenty of tree-shaded areas to escape, rest and read. The house is on 3 levels with direct access to the main level including a large living-room with dining area, log fireplace, the spacious eat-in kitchen and a bathroom. In summer, meals are enjoyed in a sheltered area on the main courtyard shaded by acacia trees. The upper level consists of 3 bedrooms, a bathroom and a large terrace overlooking the valley. At pool level, there is a separate flat with a double bedroom, a single bedroom , each with arched French windows giving onto the garden, and a bathroom with a stand-up shower and toilet. This is a family home, very personal, with memorabilia, art and a warm, cosy atmosphere. 10mn walk away, Bargemon is a lovely and lively village, actually the liveliest in the area, offering all facilities (doctor, pharmacy, post-office, supermarket, property agencies, shops, museums, municipal tennis court and swimming pool, ATM) and seven restaurants. The village has several squares each with its fountain and shaded by tall plane trees. The main square, place Chauvier, is where villagers and tourists congregate the whole day long around a glass of wine or pastis to see everyone else and hear the latest gossips. Bargemon is ideally located between the sea and the first ski slopes, 50 minutes drive away. The Grand Canyon of the Verdon is close by as well as an infinite variety of spectacular landscapes, mountain lakes and hilltop villages. The area is famous for cycling , trekking, hang-gliding and sports two beautiful golf courses 30mn drive away. Côte de Provence vineyards and wineries are in close proximity. In summer Bargemon and the neighbouring villages organise cultural events and music festivals. The art museums in St Tropez, Antibes, St Paul de Vence and the like are only 1 hour drive away. Draguignan, the closest town, has a beautiful open market and a great Provencal arts and traditions museum.

Outstanding value in a stunning location
The property was way better than the description. The pool was fantastic, the house was comfortable and very well equipped and the location was simply superb. We are wildlife nutcases and had some amazing close encounters and the variety and colour of the wild flowers just blew me away. Simply fabulous. Bargemon is a lovely village and people there were really friendly. I really don't think we could have found anything better as far as comfort and location than this property. We WILL be going back, if JF will have us?

Stunning house and garden for a fabulous family holiday
We shared the most wonderful family holiday in this gorgeously positioned and well appointed house. It all just went far too quickly. A perfect base to explore the surrounding area, for us highlights included, playing in the Gorges Du Verdon, relaxing on the beaches near to Sainte Maxime and exploring the many hill top villages. For us, it was hard to get our party motivated to leave the house; there was too much fun to be had playing in the pool with its incredible views, going on adventures around the huge grounds or just chilling in one of the many terraces. The boules pitch was also very well used with a week long inter family tournament, ending on our last day with a two hour tension filled show down. The ability to take a stunning walk into Bargemon to collect the morning baguettes and croissants was fantastic. We also shared many coffee's and drinks in the town square where you can enjoy people, bike and car watching. As a keen cyclist I also managed to sneak out in the mornings and nights for some top cycling and explored the immediate area-with a category 2 climb, the Col De Belle-Homme right outside the house, i really was in heaven. Jean-François is fantastic to deal with and was extremely helpful and kind in all aspects of our experience. Thank you very much from all of us. We had a wonderful holiday with life long memories.

Wonderful stay, lovely house, gardens and pool, great location
We stayed as a small family in July 2017. In my case this was a return, as I had stayed at the house with my parents on a previous occasion 25 years ago. The house, gardens and pool are as lovely as ever. The house is secluded but easy walking distance (with push chair) to the lovely hill town of Bargemon (we walked it at least once a day every day during our stay). It sits at the end of a quiet lane behind a pedestrian entrance gate, behind which lie substantial and very secluded grounds - an olive grove on multiple terraces interspersed with mature cypress trees, figs, lavender and other interesting plants. There is a nice patio outside the front door for meals outside. The main lounge is large, nicely furnished and has lofty views over the valley. The kitchen is homely and well stocked. The bedrooms upstairs are small but attractive and open onto a big roof terrace, ideal for a nightcap and star-gazing at the end of the day. The pool is on a lovely terrace with views down the valley to the next village of Claviers. There are lots of things to do, nice restaurants and amenities (butcher, baker etc.) in Bargemon and in the surrounding area (esp. the Lac du St Croix and Grand Canyon to the north, beaux villages (Tourtour, Chateaudouble) to the west and vineyards and coast to the south, all a short drive from the house. The owner, Jean-Francois, is kind and extremely courteous and was at the end of the phone if we had any queries. We will return.

Very cosy and relaxed feel. Lived in & well loved
Fantastic location - easy walking down into the village - and we loved the house, and its rather quirkycharacter. The same was true of the garden. Pool kept the sun all day long, and view was very pleasing on the eye. Bargemon felt alive and had good restaurants, as did several of the other little local villages. We had fabulous weather - very hot all week: the upstairs bedrooms remained very hot by night - if, like me, you don't feel you can open shutters, for breeze, without screens. Total break from TV was very welcome. I hope we will be able to return one day: it was just lovely! Diana

About the host

I was a banker, posted abroad at the time we bought our house, and Bargemon remained for a long time our peaceful oasis in an otherwise rather tumultuous journey. I love gardening and my wife, Jane, was a talented painter and a lady of exceptional taste. La Peirégoué is today a reflection of who we are. It is an unpretentious and genuine home, simple yet comfortable and cosy. Jane is no longer with us and our children are grown adults. So, I wished to share it with others who, like us, enjoy nature and the simple pleasures of life..

Why they chose this property

We were looking for a house cum garden between the coast and the mountains within walking distance from a village. The Var was our destination of choice since this Département is less built-up than the rest of the French Southeast. Bargemon is ideally located equidistant from sailing and skiing. It is also an active village where people live and work contrary to many others that have become tourist traps. The hinterland is wild and wonderful to explore with canyons streams and high plateaux. Even in the high season the village remains pleasant and relaxed even though its population doubles.

What makes this property unique

Contrary to many houses in Provence, our house is bright and sunny thanks to spacious rooms (notably the living-room) and large windows. In winter the sun streams in, which is a blessing. Another distinctive feature is that it is surrounded by greenery, providing shade and a cool breeze even in the middle of summer. Our trees are an exception in Bargemon.
We built our pool at a distance from the house to provide privacy and deaden the noise inevitably caused by screaming children in the water. In the same vein, the garden is large enough to include secluded corners to escape from the invasive family.
