Character Cottage In Quiet Village Next To The River

Overview

Property

Updated: 29-Nov-2016
Cottage at Rivière, near Chinon, Indre-et-Loire, Centre / Loire Valley, France - Character Cottage By The River Surrounded By Vineyards

If you want to forget all your worries and spend your time relaxing on the terrace drinking wine from a vineyard that it takes less than a minute to walk to, fishing on the river, paddling in its cool shallow waters or frying with the help of some coconut oil on its small but perfectly formed river-beaches, then our house is for you. Our 250 year old house, with two bedrooms (with an extra single bed inconspicuously sited in the living-room), 1 shower-room (with toilet and wash-basin) and living-room, with a feature fireplace with log burner, is one of tallest in the village of Rivière, which has been awarded Unesco World Heritage Site status, just like Stonehenge and the Taj Mahal. It really is a special place. There is a large wooden terrace, part-covered and part-open to the outside area, where you can watch the chickens climbing the ladder to the first floor of the next-door house or stare through the window of the château opposite, wondering how the other half are living. You can choose to walk along the wooded river path into Chinon or wander through the vineyards that surround Rivière, or you could while away an afternoon wine-tasting in either or both of the vineyards literally on our doorstep. Rivière is a village of two halves: the ancient bourg next to the river and the new-build area where you can feed the resident donkeys or play tennis on either of the two courts. During the summer, there are French markets in Rivière some weekends, selling artisan breads, spit-roast chicken and other interesting items. If you are more adventurous, you can visit the town of Chinon, 5 km away, famous for the longest château in Europe (actually three châteaux in a line along the ridge), with a large selection of restaurants, boutiques, internet cafés and bars. The famous châteaux of the Loire Valley are but an hour’s drive away the nearest being the famous Azay-le-Rideau; and even Paris or Euro Disney are only two-and-a-half hours away, by either car or train. Please note that, for everybody else's comfort, no smoking is allowed anywhere on the property (including the terrace and stairs). If evidence of smoking is found anywhere on the property an automatic cleaning fee of £40 will be charged.

There are four adult and one child's bike on the property, for use free of charge.

Lovely cottage with a real atmosphere

  • 4 of 5

This was a lovely cottage in a nice quiet location, although the church bells did get some getting used to (last bells at 10pm, first at 7am), as did the cockerels next door. The cottage is seconds away from a cycle track through the woods into Chinon next to the river which our family used, along with two of the adult bikes that the owner keeps with the property (we took the kids bikes).

The property has two bedrooms which both have double beds. This was fine for our younger children (4 & 6) who were happy to share but may not be as good for older children although there is an extra bed in the living area.

The locals are really friendly, but be ready to converse in French (and they were very patient with my schoolgirl French!). The best red wine that we tasted in all the caves we went in was from the cave just across from the church square.

The owner was very helpful and courteous and made sure to catch up with us to check everything was OK, which was a really nice touch.

I would definitely recommend this property.

A great location for superb accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We had a great weeks stay here, the accommodation was more than suitable for the three of us.

There's plenty of room and it feels like home from home, all of the items that you could possibly need are there, with lots of bits in the kitchen and pantry to make your stay easier.

The church bells add a rather quaint touch of days gone by.

There was no TV or wifi but that added to the atmosphere and made sure we spent time as a family doing the board games and reading.

The location is ideal with the delightful medieval town of Chinon being very close by.

Would highly recommend staying here if you want peace and tranquility with plenty to do close by.

A quaint little gite

  • 4 of 5

A very quaint little gite in quaint medieval hamlet with lovely winding passage ways and a very short walk to the Vienne river, where you can walk along its bank. The wooden steps up to the gite are not suitable for people with walking difficulties or if like us a dog that doesn't do stairs, my poor husband had to carry him and our dog is a labrdoodle. The gite did not smell of dogs or cats, I'm asthmatic and I was fine. The gite it's self has got everything you'll need, the kitchen is well equipped, the veranda would be lovely to sit out for meals, drinks and relaxing in the Summer months ( not warm enough this April). Upstairs the bedroom overlooking the church is charming, we choose that bedroom is was bigger and brighter than the other one. The bathroom is a really good size, the shower is I think they call it a power shower all singing all dancing with jets squirting all over you, but I never quite mastered it.

A really good base for having a look around the beautiful sites of the Loire. The nearest super market is the Super U on the route to Chinon before the main bridge (which was closed for repairs while we were there) in the evening in the car park of the Super U there is a Pizza van and the pizza's are fantastic thin a crispy with just the right amount of topping any Italian would be proud. There is a boulangerie and pharmacie on the main road when you've left the hamlet going towards Chinon.

Un bel endroit pour se reposer

  • 4 of 5

Location

From the Owner

Stunning setting allowing you to have total peace or, walk, bike, kayak into the town of Chinon for great meals and local wine while watching the world go by. Great access by rail, plane and motorway networks within 13 km.

Activity and Interests

Travel:

Our property is 5½-6 hours' drive from the Tunnel. The nearest airport is Tours (Ryan Air), less than an hour away. The cottage is in the village of Rivière, three miles from the shops and supermarkets in Chinon, so a holiday there without a car would be possible: by air, then train to Chinon, taxi to the property and then bike during your stay. For those coming from the North of England, P&O sail from Hull overnight into Zebruggee, which is six hours’ drive from the property via Rouen.

Distances:

The property is three miles from Chinon and less than an hour from Tours. There are several very pretty châteaux and gardens, less than an hour's drive away, and an excellent zoo (Zooparc de Beauval) less than two hours away with the most amazing bird display.

Further Details:

There is a smart new branch of Leclerc on the outskirts of Chinon, about ten minutes' drive away, and a small supermarket in the town square which stays open later (and is open on Sundays). Locally, there is an excellent bakery about five minutes' drive (or twenty minutes’ cycle-ride). We have four bikes available at the house for guest use. While there is no charge for this, we ask that guests maintain the bikes, pump up tyres etc if needed.
