Overview

About the property

Cottage in Holt, North Norfolk - Great location for exploring the North Norfolk Coast with all the amenities of Holt to hand.

Railway Cottage is a beautifully refurbished Victorian terraced house a short fifteen minute walk from the Poppy Line station in one direction and the bustling centre of Holt in the other. Retaining bags of character with Farrow and Ball paintwork, stripped wooden floors, squashy sofas and large comfortable beds, Railway Cottage is the ideal base for a family holiday exploring the North Norfolk coast.

The property sleeps a total of eight, with six in the main house (two doubles and one twin bedroom) and two more in 'Platform 2' - the annexe across the courtyard at the rear of the house and actually a converted wash house!

The garden lies to the main beyond the annexe and has a lovely secluded, rather 'secret' feel (or so I've been told by several children!). There are several areas to sit and enjoy the garden - take morning coffee on the deck behind the annexe, fire up the barbecue in the courtyard between the kitchen and annexe, or laze in the deck chairs on the lawn. Deck chairs, boules and swing ball all housed in the shed.

Family meals can be enjoyed around the late table in the kitchen or outside in the courtyard. Cooler evenings and winter nights can be spent curled up by the fire - board games (and Sky TV!) in the sitting room.

About Paula Coast

Railway Cottage used to be our home - we spent five happy years there and still live close by. Now living in a hamlet outside Holt, we are still firmly entrenched in Norfolk life!

I first visited the north Norfolk Coast in the back of a minibus with a gang of German exchange students - there was a memorable international football match on Brancaster Beach and a huge bbq on the sands. Needless to say I slightly fell in love with it and have been coming back ever since. I was quick to jump in when we were given the chance to live here, and now can't imagine living anywhere else.

Why Paula Coast chose Holt

In spite of its name, Railway Cottage was, we think, built on the site of an old Market Garden. Its relative proximity to the North Norfolk Railway and the fact that the 'Holt Flyer' Route Master bus sails past the front door adds an element of intrigue for the railway enthusiast but that is where the rail connection ends!

What makes this cottage unique

Railway Cottage has been described as 'all trousers and no mouth!' - because it is very unassuming from the outside, but opens up into something rather more interesting on the inside. The most frequent comments I receive are that it feels like 'a home from home' and 'I could live here'.

I think probably the best things about it are that it is really comfortable and conveniently located.

Guestbook comments from the owner

tasteful, comfortable accomodation in an honest, local, market town far from the 'maddening crowds'

  • 5 of 5

we were three generations on our annual 'bucket and spade' summer holiday on the north,

norfolk coast.

interested in decent, local food.

(bingo, samphire and strawberry season).

walks, nature, picnics, coastline, crabbing, walled gardens, sculpture, eccentricity, art, ceramics, shrines, shells, mud.

all available.

weather indifferent, so to return to an aga filled kitchen was bliss.

the teenager found a space to chill, likewise the cook/readers/telly watchers.

plentiful hot water, always a plus.

(only blip - we like to recycle, but the bin was completely full on arrival. maybe this

should be addressed).

thankyou so much for returning items left behind inadvertantly, so quickly.

railway cottage is quite a gem, thankyou paula coast and team.

Owner's Response: Hello Gaynor - lovely things to hear about Railway Cottage and North Norfolk - so happy when people feel at home here. You were unlucky with the weather but have managed to cram a lot in - hats off to you all! On the recycling front you'll be happy to know that we went through the bin and transferred all the recyclable items (which were handily bagged - thank you!) once the bin had been emptied. Bin collection is on a two week cycle and there just isn't enough capacity during the summer so I am trying to sort something out. Apologies for the inconvenience but rest assured the recycling did happen as the lovely Lynn who helps me with the cleaning is rather hot on recycling so woe betide if I get it wrong! Thanks again for staying and hope to welcome you again. Paula.

Railway cottage was the perfect property for our large family.

  • 5 of 5

Spacious and comfortable, the house had everything you could need. Platform 2 provided a little space and privacy for our son, daughter in law and their 5 month old baby.

Beautiful house, perfect for the whole family

  • 5 of 5

We stayed as a family of 8, across three generations. The house provided the perfect base to explore North Norfolk and it was great to have Holt a short walk away for rainy days, shopping and lovely eateries.

The house is beautifully decorated and my parents loved having their own quite space away in the garden accommodation.

It really feels like a home from home, with everything you could need including a much loved toy and DVD collection for our little ones.

Owner's Response: Good to hear that guests have enjoyed staying at Railway Cottage - that children are happy and Grandparents have somewhere to hide! Holt is a great base for exploring the North Norfolk Coast - fab for a bucket and spade holiday and day trips to the beach, or the ideal place for a short break tootling around antique shops and sampling local produce - couldn't be more delighted that you thought so too. Come back and stay anytime - most welcome!

Beautiful house, great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a long weekend celebrating my Dad's 70th birthday, we were three generations sharing the house and we had plenty of space. It is a beautiful property, all very tastefully decorated, everything nice quality and so well equipped. There were lots of toys and books to keep my two year old entertained and games for the adults in the evening. We got the hang of the Aga pretty quickly and enjoyed the warmth after days out at the beach (with a bracing wind in late April!) Would highly recommend this property, it is a short distance to the coast and lots of other attractions (the poppy line and thursford collection are our recommendations) and Holt itself is a lovely little town.

Owner's Response: So pleased you enjoyed your stay in North Norfolk - hardy types who get to the beach in April always welcome! Sounds like you found some great places to explore - the beaches at Wells-next-the-sea and Holkham are glorious in the sunshine. Come back in the summer and visit the coastal villages of Blakeney and Morston for sailing, Salthouse and Cley for birdwatching and Stiffkey for a walk out over the Freshes followed by coffee and cake in the Stores! All the very best, and apologies again for the mix up with the keys.

Lovely property in great location!

  • 5 of 5

We had a family holiday at this lovely cottage over the Easter break, there were 9 of us in total with ages ranging from 3 to 82 plus a dog! When we first pulled up outside the property I was concerned that it was going to be a bit of a squeeze but looks can be very deceptive!

The cottage has three good sized double bedrooms and two bathrooms plus an annex in the garden with double bed, an en-suite and separate seating area. Downstairs there is a fabulous living dining kitchen with aga, wood burner, a large table which easily accommodated all of us and comfy seats - this room is where we spent most of our time while at the cottage. The accommodation was spotless, tastefully decorated and very well equipped - even down to a good selection of toys which my grandchildren had a great time playing with.

Parking is to the front of the property, there's no way we could have got our two cars on there so we parked on the road and never had a problem finding a space.

Location is great, less than a 10 min walk into Holt, a 15min walk for the steam train to Sheringham and lots of places to visit nearby.

We look forward to visiting again in the not too distant future.
