Peacefully Situated House With Lawned Garden And WiFi

Overview

Property

House in Sos, Nerac, Lot et Garonne, Aquitaine, France - In Hilltop Village

Enjoying a secluded position in the ancient village of Sos, the house dates from 1680 with later additions and has recently been completely updated. With 4 double bedrooms the house sleeps 8 comfortably with wonderfully spacious living areas downstairs and upstairs. It is the perfect getaway house for a large family or friends - a wonderful retreat from the often overcrowded rural areas in Britain ( which is why we love it so much!)

A fantastic place to unwind and relax!

  • 5 of 5

With parts of the building dating back to 1680 there are so many interesting features in and around the house. The ancient well, old inscriptions on the wall, plum trees, fig trees, mint and rosemary in the garden. Lizards sunning themselves and catching insects.....

We have spent 4 weeks here and were amazed at the quiet, unspoilt village. We always ate outside at the large table on the patio and had many barbecues.

Local people were very friendly - we were able to meet and get to know a few during our stay.

There are 2 shops and a butcher in the village as well as 2 restaurants. You would ideally need a car to get out and explore the area but it is worth exploring. There are many beautiful villages, Roman ruins and mosaics, historic buildings and a huge area of beautiful countryside to see.

We were excited to spot deer, jays, kites, hawks, buzzards, bats and even a family of wild boar during our travels around the area!

There was a great Wednesday night hot food market, just 2 or 3 minutes walk away from the house where the town comes alive. Just pick your food and drink - choose a seat from the c800 laid out in the square - and tuck in! It was a great way to meet people too. We spent a lovely evening with a family from Marseille and another with some English people who had moved to the area some years ago.

Overall, we loved the quirky old house and private garden, the weather and the people!

Delightful old town house in a peaceful village

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I wanted to escape after a busy Christmas and stumbled across Peter's house on the site. We stayed over New Year and had the quietest, secluded holiday possible. Wendy, the English property manager was there to greet us with a roaring fire after our trip from London via Toulouse. She was on hand throughout our stay with advice and tips.

The house is bag and drafty in winter – which we loved! (Peter did tell us that it is more geared up to the warmer seasons and with the solid stone walls I think it would be nice and cool in the heat.) We enjoyed keeping warm by the log fire (loads of wood) and by eating plenty of food and drinking lots of beer and locally produced red wine. The master bedroom upstairs has the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. It's big, firm and has a nice warm duvet.

In winter the village of Sos is very quiet. My girlfriend and I slept better here than we ever have in London. I hear in the summer the place comes alive with fetes and festivals. If you want a peaceful holiday I cannot recommend this property enough.

Very special house

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this lovely old house earlier this year and found it very well equipped, comfortable, spacious and full of character. Peaceful village in beautiful countryside yet within easy reach of ancient and interesting towns and the nearby lake was good for swimming. All perfect ingredients for a relaxing holiday which we will definitely be repeating.

Location

From the Owner

This house has been in my family for over twenty years and has also been my home in the past. I am constantly drawn back to Sos for the peace and quiet and the amazing fresh air. The pace of life is remarkably gentle and makes a powerful antidote to the stress of city life.

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

1.5 hours' drive to the Atlantic Coast. (Many good bathing lakes in the area around Sos).

Travel:

Bordeaux Airport and Toulouse Airport one and a half hours' drive, Bergerac one and three-quarter hours' drive, Biarritz two hours, and Pau Pyrenees one and a quarter hours. Car hire is strongly recommended as the nearest railway station is in Agen (one hour away) and there are only two buses a day that serve Sos.

Distances:

Mezin 8 kilometres, Nerac, Condom and Eauze twenty kilometres, Agen fifty kilometres, Bordeaux, Toulouse and Lourdes one hundred and thirty kilometres. Gavarnie 180 kilometres. Mimizan 120 kilometres.

Further Details:

Sos has a well stocked mini-supermarket /depot de pain which sells fresh bread and patisserie daily. There is also a general store and tabac, two restaurant/bars, a pharmacy, and a hairdresser. There are traditional markets in nearby towns most days throughout the year, and during July and August there are evening markets every Wednesday in Sos itself. Barbotan les Thermes with its extensive luxury spa is 20 km away. Horse-riding is available at nearby Gabarret and also in Nerac, whilst canoes can be borrowed in Poudenas (7km), the next village along the river. Poudenas also has an excellent bar and artisan pizzeria with free wi-fi.

There are many interesting places within a few minutes' drive; the enchanting walled village of Larressingle; the only remaining circular bastide at Fources; the celebrated mosaics at the Roman Villa at Seviac, and of course dozens of small producers of armagnac, luxury duck products, and wine.

Facilities

From the Owner

The house is unusual in this village in that it has a flat garden and is surrounded by other gardens and squares, which makes for a good level of privacy even though we are "in town". I have tried to preserve the individuality of the house through various improvements. I very much appreciate the fact that the sejour stays cool and airy in the heat of the summer if you open and close the shutters at the right times!
