Recently renovated and updated, providing a serene off-season break for two, or a fabulous family holiday house for spring or summer. swimming, diving, kayaking and fishing. From the house's large front windows you will see diving birds and seals that come to feed on the turn of the tide, the Scilly Isles ferry and fishing boats coming and going from Newlyn. One visitor spotted a whale, but I can't vouch for it. Enclosed front garden, garage, parking for 2 cars, internet, well behaved dogs welcome.

About RUTH GUILDING

We have been holidaying in Cornwall since we were children, and owned a house here for over 15 years now.

That means that we know the local area much better than most, and we stay in our house as often as work permits. If you would like detailed insider advice on what to do on your holidays in Cove House just tell us what you're looking for, and Ruth will write some 'insider' notes for you.

Andrew wrote the biography of the poet and sometime Cornwall dweller, John Betjeman. Ruth is an art historian with a special interest in the St.Ives School. In our house you will find pictures and pottery by local artists, local maps and good books. Families, walkers and dog owners love it here, but so do painters and writers, many of whom return every year.

Why RUTH GUILDING chose Saint Buryan

Lamorna Cove, its full deep seas and the granite cliffs that frame it, is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the west. When it is stormy waves slop over onto the quay and surge up the slipway, but in spring and summer, swimming before breakfast and again in the evening, or looking down with a mask and snorkel into a marine landscape of waving seaweed fronds and strange spotted fish, is an intense pleasure.

By day there are beautiful surfing beaches and others, quieter and less frequented, all in easy reach. There are standing stones, lovely old pubs, art galleries and picnics and walks to be taken. At night when the visitors go home you will be left alone with the sea and the stars and the Lizard lighthouse winking back at the house's windows in this lovely place.

What makes this house unique

Cove House was built for the harbour master at Lamorna Cove in the early 1900s, when the two granite quarries here were still operating. By the 1920s the quarries had shut down and painters from the Newlyn School - Laura Knight, Alfred Munnings and 'Lamorna' Birch - had fallen in love with the scenery, moving into the granite worker's houses in the cove and village and drinking in the 'Lamorna Wink.'

Cove House has been a favourite holiday house ever since then. Best selling writer Arnold Bennett stayed here in the 1930s, mooring his yacht in the harbour. When you stay here you can wake and fall asleep in perfect peace and quiet, fish, swim or just do nothing at all. You will share the cove and garden with seals, wrens and seabirds, and at night the Milky Way shines out undimmed.

The small sandy beach in the cove is a few steps from the front door - perfect for fishermen or an early morning dip. Seals and many diving birds can be seen here at high and low tide. Many larger beaches for surfing and other activities, at Sennen, Porthleven, St.Ives, Marazion and Perranuthnoe are just a few minutes drive away.

Outstanding holiday home for a family or group of friends

The house and the location are both excellent. We were 6 adults and had a really special stay. The house itself has lots of space, and it has been furnished attractively and is very comfortable. The owner was extremely helpful with tips on the local area which was amazing. Would go back in a shot.

Tranquil, interesting little cove in a perfect location for all things Cornish.

The house was exactly what we wished for, quirky, relaxed and unfussy, well equipped, and comfortable. I would return quite happily in any season, we had glorious weather but I can see one could be cosy in any weather. Light the wood burner and watch the storm.

Charming and stylish seaside home

What a fabulous home from home this is. The house is very comfortable and well equipped with not only every practical item but beautiful things gracing every room. Ruth was a helpful and attentive home owner, answering any queries promptly and providing an extensive list of great tips and suggestions.

A perfect place to stay in west Cornwall

The location, in beautiful Lamorna Cove, is superb, with splendid views of the sea from all the rooms. Booking was efficient, and Ruth provided excellent information prior to our visit.

The house was extremely clean, with everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. The house was warmed by the sun during the day, and electric heaters and a wood burning stove provided welcome heat in the evenings. The large bathrooms were superb, with a brilliant shower. The kitchen is extremely well equipped, so cooking was easy. We also found excellent restaurants (2 Fore Street, The Old Coastguard Inn) in Mousehole.

The coastal path goes straight past the door, so we had immediate access to splendid walks. We found lots to do and explore nearby, with excellent maps and helpful suggestions from Ruth. We particularly enjoyed our visit to the Minack Theatre and a NT walk from Levant Mine.

The house can easily accommodate 8 people, and we hope to return with friends in the future.

Wonderful Lamorna Cove

Where do I start? Absolutely superb. After a very long journey from the Midlands the view of the Cove on arrival is amazing and Cove House matched that. Fantastic shabby chic and some wonderful rooms with the wet room mightily impressive!! I knew we were onto a winner as soon as I took my daughter into the lovely little garden and the very, very short walk to a great beach. My mother spent a lot of time sitting on the bench in the garden taking in the views with a cup of tea and loved it. I can't recommend the property enough and Ruth the owner, when we had an issue with parking, was very helpful. A must.

Changeover day is Friday, we have spent years driving to Cornwall and know from experience that while Saturdays can be awful, the traffic on the A30 is much lighter on a Friday.
