Updated: 22-Nov-2016
Holiday cottage 5 minutes walk to Miradoux, Nr. Lectoure, Gers, Midi-Pyrenees, France - Traditional Built Cottage On The Edge Of The Village Nestling In The Rolling Hills Of The Gers

Bijou cottage ( Jewel) is a renovated barn and is situated amongst 3 acres of private land next to the owners cottage. The adjoining paddocks still have an abundance of fruit trees including cherry, apple, pear, figs, and walnuts. During the summer months the fields surrounding the cottage will often be a sea of vibrant yellow from sunflowers, which are synonymous with the area and are truly spectacular. The cottage has retained its old French charm but offers comfortable accommodation for up to 6 people. It is a short walk across the Chemin (track) to the village of Miradoux which attracts many visitors by its surrounds and tranquillity. About the Owner

Our names are Michael & Nigel and have been living in Miradoux, Gers in the Midi-Pyrenees's since September 2014. We moved to France looking for a complete change of lifestyle having both just retired 2 weeks before we left the UK- talk about pressure and a steep learning curve!

Michael was an account manager for a major catering supply company. Nigel had worked in the NHS as a Ward manager, Macmillan Nurse and latterly as a Matron. We both loved out jobs but felt that if we didn't make the move now our dream might never happen.

We lived on the welsh borders with out Jack Russells ( both here with us) learning French from zero from..., but hey, it all adds to the fun!

A Jewel indeed

  • 5 of 5

Not Bijou but Bijoux, and this property is certainly a French jewel. Mike and Nigel were excellent 'neighbours', full of local knowledge, and we enjoyed sharing a drink or two with them both. Really nice people, very welcoming and keen to ensure our holiday was enjoyable. It made such a difference to our stay. The Gite is well equipped and in a superb location. The sunflowers were in full bloom and looked great in the surrounding fields. We would visit the local markets, and villages and enjoy the French atmosphere. Great restaurants in the surrounding towns, I would highly suggest a visit to 'La Plancha' in the next village of Castet-Arrouy. Would certainly recommend this property to anyone and would like to visit again one day.

A dream location and immaculate accommodation

  • 5 of 5

Many thanks for a fabulous week in the beautiful French countryside. The property is picture perfect and the location idyllic, having distant views over the surrounding sunflower fields from the vine covered terrace. Cool in the midday sun and close enough to the very welcoming pool! We discovered a perfect little bar/restaurant in Castet-Arrouy, the next village and fine dining in Lectoure, about 10k away. Our extremely welcoming hosts gave us fruit from the trees, fresh eggs, homemade jam and even a G & T one evening! This property is a joy and we will certainly return.

This characterful accommodation set in a tranquil rural location proved just the place to unwind and relax. Peaceful sleep in well appointed accommodation that provided all the comforts of home in French country ambiance. The very agreeable hosts were able to provide invaluable local information when needed. Indeed; the offer of fresh free range eggs from the chickens in the orchard was such a treat.

Far reaching views views from the garden over countryside gave a vista that only France can provide. Distant hilltop villages, cottages and chateaux all take their place in this regions geography. There are also a plethora of ancient towns, markets and villages to explore; together with a diverse choice of restaurants. Watch this space, I will surely return again soon.

What a find!

  • 5 of 5

We had not visited this part of France before but it did not disappoint. The country side is amazing and there are numerous towns with markets nearby, to enjoy.

Bijou Cottage is ideally situated to take advantage of the views and we spent some time just walking in the area.

Michael and Nigel are so welcoming and the cottage is lovely with all the facilities you could wish for. The rooms are spacious and full of character. Outside is a patio area with barbecues and swimming pool which overlooks rolling fields and hills.

You are actually quite torn with staying the day relaxing and enjoying what the cottage offers, or venturing further afield.

Thank you Michael and Nigel. See you again soon.

What a find!

Having returned from a short break at Bijou Cottage, I would like to recommend this to others in need of a relaxing holiday. Michael and Nigel, the owners were very welcoming and friendly and were available for help, if required. The property is very much as described and is certainly not 'Bijou', offering plenty of inside and outside space. My friend and I enjoyed their company and managed to share the odd glass of red. The facilities at Bijou were very comfortable and whilst it was not warm enough in April to enjoy the pool, it looked very inviting. The cottage is surrounded by fields of sunflowers and although these had only just been sown, the owners told us that when flowering later in the year, these provide a stunning backdrop. It really offers an away from it all holiday, with lovely walks and nearby towns and villages to visit, if required. I look forward to visiting this gem in the French countryside again soon.

Owner's Response: Dear Ian, many thanks for posting a review of our cottage, very glad to hear that you enjoyed your break and the positive comments. Point taken that the name, Bijou cottage, might imply that the property is small, which, as you say it most definitely isn't. Hope to see you again sometime. P.S. Weather first week of May beautiful and the pool being used. Regards, Michael & Nigel

From the Owner

We chose to buy a house in the Gers because we fell in love with the wonderful countryside and the numerous medieval bastide villages which renowned for there beauty and quintessential style. We'd been searching for a characterful rustic property with land, for quite awhile, but, as we approached the house for the first time in April 2014 we both knew that our search was over. Although it's a cliché, we both feel that we are now, living the dream and look forward to sharing a little of our new life with our guests in Bijou cottage. Although where we live is very rural, and little English spoken (we think a definite plus and one of the. main reasons for coming here) it is very accessible to both large and small towns with excellent and varied shops/facilities.
