Villa With Panoramic Views Over Obidos Lagoon To The Atlantic Ocean

Updated: 14-Oct-2016
Villa in Nadadouro, Obidos Lagoon, Silver Coast, Portugal - Relaxing Location 5 Minutes Walk To The Lagoon Shore And The Sailing Club

The recently renovated open-plan living area on the upper level enjoys spectacular views and sunsets over the lagoon where it meets the wild Atlantic Ocean. Fully opening glass doors give access to the roof terrace with brick built barbecue and outdoor eating or sitting space. It is complemented by a fully equipped kitchen, dining area and comfortable indoor seating with a wood burning stove for chilly evenings out of the main holiday season (note there is no central heating). The natural wood ceiling, white walls, terracotta floor and blue and white tiles in the cloakroom maintain the Portuguese style. We built the villa 30 years ago, have grown up there and our children love it so we have recently refurbished it, maintaining the traditional feel and blending in modern amenities. The villa is spacious with large rooms and the multiple living areas mean that everyone can find their own space to relax. The entrance hall from the front door is spacious and will easily accommodate push chairs and car seats. Three main bedrooms are on this level as well as a large lounge and a steep oak staircase to the upper floor. The fenced garden setting is safe for children and the established trees and shrubs provide shade if needed. In this part of Portugal there is often a light breeze making the temperature very pleasant for sitting in the sun. The pool has a sheltered terraced area for sunbathing and is sunny for most of the day. The Pool View room is on the lower level by the pool with a small kitchenette. The villa is on a small mature development at the end of a cul de sac with parking outside, making it an excellent base to explore the area and much of Portugal. The verandah on the mid-level also provides a shady place to sit and overlook the pool in the hot days of summer.

About the Owner

We are an extended family covering all ages - young children, teenagers, students, parents and pensioners - we all love to relax here. We go for short breaks and longer holidays and are always sad to leave. We were seduced by the magic of the lagoon and 30 years later have not tired of it; even though we look over it every day we are there. There is something for everyone, whether it be cafes and cakes for my father, sailing for my brother, sunbathing or shopping for the girls; cycling or walking in the countryside. Our neighbours are lovely too. We are happy to make suggestions if you have specific interests, do ask.

Fantastic Villa in great location

  • 5 of 5

Photos of the villa and the view don't do it justice. It was beautiful. Clean, well presented filled with everything you need - never seen so much crockery and pots and pans in a rental property. The upper level is great for larger groups -plenty of space for everyone to relax inside or out. The view over the lagoon is fantastic. We loved the location - not too far by foot to a few restaurants if you didn't want to drive (20 minutes walk but some hills), close to the beach and plenty to see and do in the area.

The only thing I think its worth pointing out, is to those who are less able - the top level (kitchen, dining room, living area and large outdoor balcony) is accessible internally via some very steep wooden steps. We had kids (4 and 8) so we made them use the outside steps to get upstairs whenever we could. The last one to lock up at night would have to use the wooden steps back down though :) We also used the pool room with an extra bed as there was 9 of us - this room was great with its own bathroom which we all used when down by the pool. Parking was easy, all on road but plenty of room for a few cars for each of the surrounding properties. Pool wasn't overlooked by neighbouring properties - unless they hungover the side of their outdoor stairs!. We all agreed that if we return to the area we would stay at Casa Das Plumas again.

Owner's Response: Thank you, we have equipped the villa fully, and to a high standard, as it is our home and we want our guests to enjoy using it. We do find that the villa offers suitable space for everyone to relax in different ways; in the garden, by the pool or on the terrace or just listening to music enjoying the view. The internal stair is steep (although my father who is over 80 does use it) and the external alternative is easier, especially when carrying shopping. We do provide stair-gates for both stairs for groups with younger guests.

A beautiful villa with great views and in a lovely location. Lived up to all the reviews and more.

As soon as we arrived we got the wow factor straight away. The layout of the villa was more than ideal for a family of 8 of both sides of the age spectrum. The views from the top of the villa were wonderful, where we enjoyed eating our dinner and having drinks, while watching beautiful sunsets. The grandchildren screamed with delight when they saw the reasonable sized pool. There was adequate amount of loungers around the pool. The kids in fact were in the pool within 10 minutes of our arrival. We were met by the wonderful Portuguese Carla who lived across the road and looked after the property for the owners. She speaks perfect English. She looked after our every need during our stay. The location could not be better. The beaches, cafes and restaurant were in easy walking distance. Even for the more elderly of the party! The local restaurants in Nadadouro, served wonderful Portuguese food at a reasonable price, and service was good and friendly. We spent quite sometime at the the Obidos Lagoon, which is only 5 minutes from the villa. The sailing club provided plenty of water activities {catamarans, windsurfing, kayaks and paddle boards. All at very reasonable rates (even coaching}. The club cafe scrumptious food and drinks, again at a very reasonable cost. The club staff were lovely and friendly. Particularly Filipe, who my grandchildren loved. I should finish by saying how helpful Sheila, the owner, and her brother Simon were. There many emails going to and fro with information and very helpful tips. We will definitely return again. Our grandchildren were very upset when we left and made me promise they could return again. Thank you Sheila, for a dream holiday.

Owner's Response: I am delighted that the 3 generations in your group of 8 were all able to enjoy the villa and find local activities to engage you all. This part of Portugal is still so reasonable to eat out or to buy fresh food to cook in the villa, and we are happy to make suggestions based on your group's needs and interests to help you prepare for your stay. We love this area and want you to have a holiday that you will remember, and entice you to return

  • 5 of 5

The location of the house is perfect, near the beach and close to the Obidos Lagoon, a quiet neighborhood and nice neighbors.

The house was completely clean and very well mainteined.

The owner helped us with a lot of things and she gave us some welcome gifts.

I recommend this place to everybody.

Owner's Response: I am pleased that the extra touches are appreciated, we do try to offer a more personal stay, rather than just a spacious villa with lovely views. The location works well for groups or families driving from Spain and it is also easy to drive to the north or south of Portugal as we are in the middle of the country, but on the coast.

Lovely villa in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

The view from the upstairs of the villa has to been seen to be believed. It directly overlooks the nearby lagoon and enjoys a spectacular sunset each evening. The large terrace is reached through the newly-renovated upstairs area, with comfortable seating inside and out, a fully equipped kitchen and wood-burner for the winter months.

There are a range of bedrooms and the property could comfortably host a large family but is also perfect for a couple to get away. The rooms are comfortable and quiet, allowing time to relax when not busy exploring the surrounding area.

Within a short distance of the villa is the historic walled town of Obidos. As well as being an enjoyable day out in itself the town also hosts several great restaurants and cafes for travellers. A little closer to home is the town of Caldas da Rainha which has a market selling local fresh food, an excellent variety of independent shops and a park with boating lake.

The lagoon itself, on the doorstep of the property, has a range of bars and restaurants to enjoy at any time of day but the atmosphere at sunset is particularly vibrant.

I'd recommend the villa and the area to any traveller looking to see the real Portugal.

Owner's Response: We agree that the view is particularly special which is why the main living area is now upstairs so you can enjoy it in all weathers. Glad you had a chance to explore the local area, lots of real Portugal here.

A slice of the real Portugal

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking to get away from the usual tourist trail, and see the real Portugal, this is the place to stay. A beautiful villa with all modern amenities, but retaining something unique to Portuguese style. While there is plenty to do on the doorstep with the lagoon and beach only minutes away, a car is recommended if you want to go a little further afield to see the local towns. The walled city of Obidos is just a short udrive away, and is well worth a visit for a stroll around the walls and through the narrow cobbled streets. Quality shops, bars and restaurants, not just tourist tat.

A little further afield, the old fishing village of Nazare is a great choice with its fabulous beach, cobbled streets and funicular railway up the steepest of cliffs. Living history can be seen on the beach, with the a display of traditional fishing boats, the day's catch drying in the sun, guarded by the fish-wives in their traditional dress.

While the villa has a fabulous re-fitted kitchen, if you want to eat out you can do so very cheaply in this part of Portugal. Coffee and cakes for 3 people is only about €4, and a 3 course dinner with local wine is only around €10 per person.

Lots to do, but really you don't have to go out looking for entertainment. With fabulous views of the lagoon and out to sea from the upstairs living room and terrace, just sitting watching the changing sky and sunset is a relaxing pastime. With a private pool, bikes to ride, games room etc as well as walking and water sports on the lagoon, this is a great place to stay whether you want relaxation or activities.

Owner's Response: Really glad you enjoyed staying at the villa, we have tried to make it traditional Portuguese in feel whilst being modern in terms of amenities. We love the area too, there is still lots more to explore, do come again.

From the Owner

We love this part of Portugal, preferring its traditional feel, beautiful unspoilt beaches, friendly people and the magic of the lagoon which we see every morning from our villa. It is an ideal place for a relaxing break for couples and families with children, and is well located to visit other areas of Portugal. The local restaurants are exceptional value and welcome children; alternatively the local butcher will cut meat for the barbeque. The Caldas fish market is one of the best in Portugal and the vegetables from the market are so fresh and tasty you will want to cook them. We built the villa 30 years ago, we have grown up there and our children love it too so, we have recently refurbished it, maintaining the traditional feel and blending in some modern amenities. It is furnished as our second home and we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

Nearest Airport : Lisbon at 90 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : Santander/Bilbao at 835 Kilometres Nearest Golf : at 15 Kilometres Nearest Train : Caldas da Rainha at 8 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : A8 at 7 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Nadadouro at 1 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Foz do Arelho at 1 Kilometres Car: recommended

5 minutes walk to the lagoon shore and the Sailing Club (catamaran, wind surfing and kite surfing hire & tuition), 5 minutes drive to the main Foz bathing beach - also accessible via the cycle path (approx 10 minutes). For more adventurous beaches, all less than 40 minutes drive: surfing at Baleal, visit to the Berlenga islands from Peniche, Salgado for the huge waves, Nazare for the funicular and Salir with the huge sand dune for the children to climb and a boardwalk over the water.

Lisbon (90km) is the nearest airport; an hour's mainly motorway drive, there is parking outside the villa It is also possible to fly to Porto (2 hours away) or to Faro (4 hours) if you also want to visit the Algarve. Arriving without a car: regular fast buses go to Caldas da Rainha, taking about an hour and costing 8 Euros per person, a short taxi ride away from Casa das Plumas. It is easier to have a car to explore the area but possible without one by using taxis, buses or bicycles.

Village of Nadadouro (700m), Foz do Arelho (1.5km) a little further to the beach with a lovely promenade and bars/restaurants. Caldas Da Rainha (6km) - for the fruit and veg market (not sunday), fish market (not Sunday/Monday) & hospital.

Many interesting places to visit easily accessible by car via the excellent motorways including World Heritage sites of Obidos - a beautiful mediaeval walled city (8km), Tomar - Knights Templar castle (70km), Alcobaca (30km) huge monastery and pottery shops.

Further Details:

The local restaurants are exceptional value and welcome children; there are several in Nadadouro within walking distance and Foz do Arelho a 5 minute drive/ 1 mile walk. There are banks and small shops and post offices in both places. Alternatively the butcher in Foz will cut meat for the barbeque for you. The Caldas da Rainha fish market (10 minute drive or 30 min cycle)is one of the best in Portugal and the vegetables from the market there are so fresh and tasty if you prefer to cook and enjoy a meal on the terrace.

We particularly enjoy the plentiful busy cafes offering delicious and very reasonable snacks and cakes to relax and watch the world go by. The local sailing club offers a range of boats, kayaks and paddle boarding together with instruction if required and there is also fishing and kite-surfing on the lagoon. There are lovely walks and cycle paths round the lagoon area and it is a good place for bird watching, photography or just looking for shells on the lagoon shore, there is also a running/cycle path by the lagoon. The local Foz beach is on the lagoon side of the sandspit so is safe for swimming and beach tents can be hired for the day. The shady park with the boating lake in Caldas is always popular with children - there is a water park an hour away. Horse riding, bowling, go-karting and tennis are available in Caldas. There are also good shops in Caldas if you want to go shopping.

For the evening there are nightclubs in Caldas and during August the local villages each hold a week long ‘festa’ with live bands and dancing, stalls and food.

There are so many interesting places to visit - just ask if you want more ideas!

From the Owner

It is easy to get here, flying to Lisbon it is a 1 hour drive, mainly on motorway to get to the villa - there is parking outside. You will be enchanted by the amazing view in all weathers and the villa is spacious and well appointed. This also makes it viable for a long weekend visit, which we often do in the mid season as the weather is often very warm in the day right through to the end of October. If you arrive without a car the regular fast buses go to Caldas da Rainha, a short taxi ride away. These take about an hour and cost 8 Euros per person. It is easier to have a car to explore the area but there is plenty to do without; we do have some bikes available for hire. The property is furnished and decorated in the Portuguese style of white walls and tiling, positioned above the Lagoa da Obidos with a breathtaking panorama of views to the end of the Lagoon and to the Atlantic Ocean, just at the point where the sun sets in the summer. The newly refurbished kitchen and living area, with floor to ceiling fully opening glass doors, allow us to enjoy this timeless view at any time of year.
