Overview

About the property

Newly converted barn in St Maden, near Dinan, Cotes D'Armor, Brittany - Calm and peaceful with private garden and exclusive access to private woodland.

We have renovated a cob and stone barn into comfortable accommodation for two, using original techniques and materials sympathetic to the original building, such as earth plaster, locally handmade kitchen tiles and solid wood floors. This building provides private accommodation, independent from our own home and the other gîte.

A large entrance hall leads up the stairs to the accommodation, all on the first floor. An arch at the far end opens into the bedroom. For a good night's sleep, the orthopaedic, pocket-sprung, zip link bed can be configured as a king-size or two singles, as you wish. There is a table and two chairs under one window, a kitchen area next to that and a comfortable sofa and armchair with footstool in front of a wood stove, logs supplied for free. At the other end of the building is a shower room, with toilet.

A few short strides from the front door takes you to your own private garden including a shelter with table and chairs. You can also wander around our 3-acre smallholding with its free-range chickens, runner ducks in the veg patch, small flock of Breton sheep, bee hives and, during the summer, a pair of pigs. A little further afield, you can explore our 11 acre woodland.

We have freshly-laid eggs, homemade sausages, mixed salads and handmade soap available to buy. We offer short courses: sausage-making and soap making being the most popular. Please note that the cottage is not suitable for children or pets, and smoking is not permitted inside the gite.

About Gabrielle Anderson

We met in Brighton and moved to Brittany, buying our house in 2006. We’ve made great efforts to learn French and integrate into our local community, making good friends along the way.

Ex-townies, we’ve had lots to learn as we establish our permaculture smallholding growing herbs, vegetables, fruit and nuts, variously accompanied by chickens, ducks, rabbits, sheep, pigs during the summer and, more recently, bees. In the winter months, we work in our 11 acres of woodland.

We enjoy running the holiday cottage and have recently finished converting the barn into another comfortable gite for two which is separate from the cottage and will have its own private garden.

We're always happy to stop work and chat; that said, we'll leave you to enjoy the privacy of your own gite and garden.

Traditional, comfortable and a wonderful space to spend time in!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful space...!! To fall asleep listening to the Midwife frog croaking his goodnight and awake to the sounds of the countryside around you. Perfect peace.

The accommodation was spotless and the décor traditional.. Lovely.

Stuart and Gabrielle could not have been more helpful and welcoming.

Stuart took pride in showing us their animals and telling us about the lifestyle they lead.

We used the BBQ and sat in the garden in the glorious sunshine listening to the birds and bees... no traffic noise... utter bliss.

St Maden is a pretty village and they have a fresh bread oven 1 Euro per loaf, if you are stuck! Wonderful.

There are lovely French villages close by the eat, with Dinan a comfortable drive.

All in all a wonderful and relaxing stay. We will return!

wet week in brittany

  • 4 of 5

Stuart and Gabrielle were very good hosts and made us feel welcome from the start. The setting of the gite was unusual as it is in the middle of old houses and barns but still has a particular charm of its own.The gite itself was modern and comfortable but lacks a view but the grounds are pretty and very interesting. Our stay was most relaxing and far too short.I would recommend it especially if you are interested in ecological matters as the hosts are full of tips and information and run some practical hands on courses. The weather does its own thing no matter where you are.

Cottage was exactly as described. We were very pleased with it.It was immaculate and cosy

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have just returned having spent a relaxing week celebrating our silver wedding anniversary.

The cottage was everything we wanted. It is peaceful and relaxing, however should you wish to venture further afield there is ample to do.

We visited Dinan,Dinard,st malo and the beach. All of these and plenty more are very accessible.

We took our bikes with us and wasn't sure how that would pan out.Turned out to be a huge success and would definitely do that again. The local villages are easily reached which are beautiful to visit for lunch or just a pit stop.

The voie verte cycle route is to be recommended. We cycled along the canal path stopping off at lovely interesting villages until we reached Dinan for lunch.

This is all off road so was extremely safe and relaxing. We also did various rides on local roads which, due to the lack of traffic, was also excellent.

The area is beautiful and Stuart and Gabriella made us feel extremely welcome.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this cottage.

Charming rural property with delightful owners

  • 5 of 5

we stayed in this excellent property for a week. Gabrielle and Stuart were charming hosts and ensured our every need was catered for even though they had to leave for a few days. We were warm and comfortable with the wood burning stove fired up each evening and indeed we can endorse previous reviews that the bed was very comfortable. Lovely countryside surroundings, well maintained and furnished property. Would stay again.

We offer several practical short courses. One of our most popular courses is sausage making, where you make and keep a kilo of delicious sausages from our own home produced pork. You can stick to one of our original recipes or you can add some flavourings of your own. Soap-making also goes down very well with guests, where you can make and keep 8 bars of cold processed soap scented with an essential oil and flower petals from the garden. All courses come with their own fact-sheet and course notes for you to take away. Please see our website (click on "Short Courses") for the full list of courses available, prices and full details.
