About the property

Cottage in Cravant-les-Coteaux, Chinon, Indre-et-Loire, Centre / Loire Valley, France - Rural Location, 5 Miles from the Mediaeval Town of Chinon

L'Ecurie is a detached stable conversion for 4 people, with generous gardens and private access to the bank of the river Vienne. You may eat lunch on the terrace, barbecue in the private, fenced garden (sun-loungers provided) or just relax by the river, watching fish and frogs in the slow-moving shallows. The bank slopes down very gently to the water's edge, with knee-high reeds in the summer where you will also see brilliant blue damsel flies alight to sun themselves. Watch the sunlight play on the Chateau at Chinon, 7 miles away, over the well-tended vineyards and then visit the bustling local market there on Thursday morning. The setting is peaceful and rural, in a tiny hamlet, but only 15 minutes from the supermarket and good local shops. It's also ideally located for visiting the famous chateaux of the Loire and vineyards that surround them. About michael dixon

I'm a scientist in my 50s, running a small bioscience company in the Cambridge area. My wife, Teresa is a nurse and we have two grown up children. We've all loved going to L'Ecurie for the last eight years now and, when it came on the market 2 years ago, we just had to buy it. It's an ideal base for exploring the Loire valley.

Our children travel a lot (a year in NZ, trips to the US, most recently Thailand) but, when we mention that Ecurie is free, miraculously, they are too!

michael dixon purchased this cottage in 2013

Why michael dixon chose Cravant-les-Côteaux

We bought L'Ecurie in 2013, simply because we'd been renting it, or another property nearby, for years and, when it came up for sale, we couldn't bear the idea of someone else having it!

Even when we went elsewhere in the summer, we usually ended up with a week at L'Ecurie as well, often as a sort of haven after touring bits of Europe.

It already felt like our second home, even before we bought it and we often don't do very much while we're there; we'll sit and read, eat and drink by the river for days, only stirring to visit the odd local chateau (great gardens for children to run round, ours still do even though they're in their twenties) or the local market.

In the past we've canoed down the river, watched Bastille day fireworks from the town and listened to jazz in the square. And we always enjoy exploring the Loire valley, one of the prettiest regions of France.

What makes this cottage unique

Since the purchase, we've really made it ours, with four visits in 2013, including one in February when we filled the car with logs and played games snuggled up around the fireplace.

We re-arranged the garden in the summer, so there's now a walled and fenced area with a barbecue, and a view of the chateau at Chinon in the distance. My daughter hand-painted a sign for the wall, showing you where to park, and decorated it with drawings of the tiny blue damsel flies which alight on the reeds down by the river.

And we've tidied up the river bank, so you can carry your lunch tray down easily and set it down on a picnic table that's level.

There's also a double lilo to fall asleep on (and an electric pump!) and an old ridge tent which your children are welcome to try out in the private garden.

It's all so comfortable that the Loire valley almost goes un-noticed!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We had a very relaxing stay at L'Ecurie in summer 2014. The house is simple, but has everything you need for a comfortable holiday. The private riverside location is idyllic - a beautiful, slow-flowing river, wih trees for shade, sun loungers to relax on, and plenty of privacy. Our children enjoyed paddling and swimming in the river, and playing endless games in the garden.

The house is situated within a few minutes drive of Chinon, an interesting historic town with all the shops you require, plus a fantastic market on Thursdays, enjoyed by the whole family. When we could persuade ourselves to leave the riverside sun loungers, we enjoyed visiting the old parts of Chinon, canoeing down the river and visiting local chateaux." Beth

Our cottage is about 5.5 to 6 hours drive from the Tunnel. The nearest airport is Tour, less than 1 hour away. The cottage is in a tiny hamlet, about 5 miles from the shops and supermarkets in Chinon, so a holiday there without a car would be possible only for the really energetic. It is set in the heart of the Loire valley, close to the bank of the river Vienne.

The cottage is 5 miles from Chinon and less than an hour from Tour. There are several very pretty chateaux and gardens, less than an hour's drive away, and an excellent zoo, (Zooparc de Beauval) less than two hours away with the most amazing bird display.

Further Details:

There is a smart new branch of Leclerc on the outskirts of Chinon, about ten minutes drive away, and a small supermarket in the town square which stays open later (and is open on Sundays). Locally, there is an excellent bakery about 5 minutes drive (or twenty minutes cycle ride).

Delightful character cottage in tranquil setting.

  • 5 of 5

L'Ecurie was just as described, and we had no trouble finding it from the directions supplied. Michelle, the Manager, lived nearby, and was extremely pleasant and helpful. We settled in very easily, and found that all basic facilities were on hand. The property was delightful and typically rustic, as expected, and it was comfortable, clean, well-maintained and hygienic. The Owner clearly has an eye for detail, and the literature was informative and comprehensive, covering everything that one could reasonably wish to know regarding the property, its facilities and the local amenities. A valuable bonus was the private riverside access, which was a haven of peace and restfulness on a warm sunny afternoon. The beauty of this setting is hard to exaggerate, and we spent some time every afternoon with a glass of wine, just enjoying the river Vienne, its wildlife and the unspoiled location. In nearby Cravant-les-Coteaux is a good Auberge with a friendly and welcoming Owner, and there are good restaurants and all the other facilities you would need in the nearby (5km) historic town of Chinon. We enjoyed a couple of excellent meals at a restaurant in St. Germaine, around 15km away, for only E15 for three good-sized courses. Within easy driving distance there are dozens of really beautiful towns and villages, boasting Chateaux and fortifications of breathtaking beauty, and for walkers there are plenty of well-marked country walks. As a conveniently-located base from which to explore this extraordinarily unspoiled region of France, we have no hesitation in recommending this property.

A delightful cottage in a fabulous location

  • 5 of 5

Can there be any more relaxing pastime than lazing in the late afternoon sun on the bank of a French river, watching the darting flight of swallows feeding low over the water, a kingfisher alighting on a branch protruding from the flow, attending to the serious business of catching supper to sustain life. A perfect scene of tranquility and industry.

A snapshot of a moment during a fabulous week spent at L'Ecurie, a delightfully restful cottage in a beautiful position by the River Vienne.

There is a great deal to see and do just in and around Chinon. The photogenic streets of the town with an apparently inexhaustible supply of subject matter to delight the avid photographer. The buildings, the streets, the Thursday market and the people. A sensory overload.

History is close, exuding from every ruelle and weathered doorway. From the Plantagenets through the Cardinal at Richelieu to more modern times, the urge is strong to mentally time hop.

And after all this intense mental activity, it is marvellous to retreat to L'Ecurie, grab a glass of the local produce and just be, allowing the river to carry away any remaining cares to the sea.

Well appointed gite in delightful setting!

  • 4 of 5

This lovely, well maintained gite is set amongst other converted farm buildings. This gives a sense of being part of a friendly little community. L'Ecurie has the advantage of a private garden in which to wile away the hours in quiet contemplation. Or you can wander down to your own riverside stretch and watch the natural world just drift on by. The welcome from Michelle, the local manager, was very friendly and helped to get the holiday off to a relaxing start. To top everything off you are only 5 minutes away from the lovely town of Chinon which is ideal for pottering about in with a good selection of bars, cafés,shops and a really good Thursday market. All in all a really good package for who the owners suggest it would suit!
