Overview

About the property

Very spacious Edwardian villa with private gardens, close to sandy beaches, town and on the SW Coast Path. Plenty of parking

Built as a grand seaside home for a large Edwardian family, The Mount has ample space for groups to get together, with room to spread out and relax. It sleeps 12 to 15 adults plus children (maximum 16 in total). Its elevated position gives sea views to Old Harry Rocks or Durlston Bay from many rooms, and the enclosed, sunny gardens that wrap around the house are a great spot to relax and enjoy a barbecue or a game of croquet or badminton. There are three large reception rooms – a dining hall, a sunny lounge and a music room. The kitchen and utility are fully equipped to a professional standard. Upstairs are six bedrooms – four very large family rooms and two normal sized double rooms that were originally for servants – plus two family bathrooms and one en suite.

The house is extremely well equipped, with lots of books, games and toys, as well as a full-size pool table and a large TV with Netflix. There's a piano and other instruments and Sonos speakers with a free Google Play account.

The town centre, with its sandy beaches, cafes, restaurants and galleries, is a short walk downhill. In summer a bus service stops right outside the gate. The Jurassic Coast and Southwest Coast Path is on the doorstep and there are great walks from the door to Durlston National Nature Reserve, Anvil Point lighthouse and beyond. There is off-road parking for two or three cars plus plenty of on-street parking on two sides of the house. Dogs are very welcome.

Ideal for large family get-together.

  • 5 of 5

We took the Mount for a long weekend in February for a family get-together of 15 of all ages (4 - 70) together with two dogs. The immediate impression was of a spacious and comfortable a house with a friendly feel to it, well furnished in a manner sympathetic to the building.

Upstairs we particularly valued the flexibility of the sleeping arrangements, so that we could choose to have four girls together on the top floor, two boys together and only the youngest sharing with parents. The main bedrooms felt very grand and had good views

Downstairs, the second sitting room / music room / TV room and the huge kitchen meant that there was plenty of space for everyone without people being on top of each other and with different groups doing different things. The house had everything we wanted with plenty to keep people amused - the pool table under the dining table top and the selection of musical instruments to be played were particularly popular. It was also very practical, from the tiled entrance hall in which to leave muddy and sandy footwear to the boiler / drying room at the back of the house (we were fortunate in having dry weather and did not need it but in bad weather or for a longer stay it would have been a godsend).

The garden is large and with lots of interest - the children enjoyed running round in it and at a warmer time of year it would be delightful to sit out in.

The location is convenient; a comfortable walk to the coast at Durston and to Peverill point as well as to the centre of Swanage and its beach (subject to the return from Swanage being quite an uphill climb),

We didn't actually meet Elaine but all our phone and email conversations with her were very friendly and she did everything to make sure we had all we wanted to enjoy our stay - Many thanks Elaine.

Wonderful house beautifully equipped for all the family.

  • 5 of 5

A comfortable, cosy house; extremely well equipped for all visitors. Plenty to do and plenty of places to enjoy a book or play some music or have a game of pool. Lots of space inside and out and so close to the coast!

Our extended family had a marvellous weekend celebrating a senior birthday.

Wonderful house

  • 5 of 5

Don't look any further! The Mount cannot be surpassed. I have just celebrated my 60th birthday with four generations of family in this gorgeous home. It is so much more than a holiday rental. Elaine has thought of everything. There is no compromise on quality or comfort. The beds are sublime, toiletries are plentiful and fluffy gowns are provided for all adults. Music, books, games, toys, art and craft, pool table – it's all there with something for all age groups. My elderly mother proved to be a pool shark – who knew? While my three-year-old granddaughter sobbed because she didn't want to leave!! 'Scorched Earth Policy' does not exist here. Elaine and Carl provide a full cupboard of condiments, oil, herbs and spices and dishwasher tablets in abundance. To top it all the house was decorated for Christmas and looked exquisite. I'm running out of superlatives. Just book it and experience The Mount for yourself!

A top spot for our family celebration

  • 5 of 5

The Mount was a truly amazing house for our family get-together to celebrate my dad's 80th birthday! It accommodated us all with ease (11 adults, 4 children/teenagers & a dog) & was superbly equipped with everything we needed to have an enjoyable stress free week away! The welcome pack of Dorset goodies & birthday message to my dad was a lovely & personal touch! We enjoyed some great meals, games of pool, quiet moments, log fires, musical interludes & catch ups with each other. The walks & views from the house were fabulous helped by the dry, mild & sunny weather that we were blessed with this November!! Many thanks to Elaine & family for making our week away such a wonderful experience. The Mount will live long in our memories!

Lovely house, perfect for a family get together

  • 5 of 5

This house is wonderful and was perfect for three generations of our family to celebrate Mum's 65th. Don't be put off by Swanage (a bit tacky in places), this is just outside and among the most lovely houses and green spaces. Really close to Durlston Country Park which is lovely for a long walk (& the cafe there looked fabulous, people very smartly dressed for Sunday lunch & others there for just tea and cakes).

We loved the garden and played a lot outside, badminton and ball games. Didn't really use the 2 lounges as it was so nice outside but this house would be very cosy in the winter.

The kitchen was very well equipped and we loved the quality bed linen and towels. Plenty of toilet roll, dishwasher tablets etc. Loved and used the Sonos speaker system.

All communications very efficient and friendly.

If you want a wonderful meal in a fabulous place try The Pig on the Beach at Studland - stunning!

Swanage Beach

Coast/Beach:

Two mins' walk to cliff top coastal path and Swanage Downs with views across the bay to Old Harry Rock, Isle of Wight.

Two mins' walk & then a bit of a scramble down to a pebbled 'wild beach' – our kids' favourite

Five to 10 mins' walk down to main sandy Swanage beach (you can take the road, or the Downs route). This is a family beach with Punch and Judy in summer, new beach huts for hire, ice-cream kiosks, showers and WCs

20 mins walk to far beach, beyond the huts, quiet, wild & sandy

Further Details:

Purbeck is packed with things to do: stone carving, dry-stone walling, coasteering, kayaking, sailing, rowing, diving, snorkelling, horse-riding and trekking (along the beach at Studland), birdwatching boat trips, botany and nature walks, historical walks, astronomy events (Durlston Country Park has its own observatory), sea fishing, golf, mini golf, tennis, sea swimming, galleries and exhibitions. And of course there is the steam railway, puffing from Swanage town centre to Corfe Castle. The bus that stops right outside The Mount during the summer will drop you at the station. You can walk along the top of the chalk ridge to Corfe Castle, then catch the train home again.

Or catch an open-top bus to Studland and across the chain ferry to Sandbanks and Bournemouth town centre.

Swanage is known for its musical events including the annual jazz festival, blues festivals, folk festival and classical music performances throughout the year.

The Mowlem Theatre by the main beach shows films regularly and it's great to be able to walk home from the cinema.

There are numerous pubs in the town and nearby. Our favourite in Swanage is The Black Swan, five/ten minutes walk up the old High Street from the centre of town. It gets booked up in advance for eating, but you can enjoy a drink in the garden if there's no room indoors. We also like the lively Snack Bar for a cocktail. The Scott Arms at Kingston (a short drive or bus ride away) is our favourite out-of-towner. They do a great roast and there are wonderful views from the garden over Corfe Castle - with a Jerk Shack in the garden in warmer months. If you get a chance, do visit the famous Square and Compass pub at Worth where there is often something going on. No dining rooms, but always a pasty or veggie potato pie available and wonderful views to the sea from the stone tables in the front garden.

Lots of restaurants to choose from too - including The Salt Pig 2 on Station Road - serving all locally-sourced fare. Love Cake on the old High Street is another favourite.
