About the property

Very spacious Edwardian villa with private gardens, close to sandy beaches, town and on the SW Coast Path. Plenty of parking

Built as a grand seaside home for a large Edwardian family, The Mount has ample space for groups to get together, with room to spread out and relax. It sleeps 12 to 15 adults plus children (maximum 18 in total). Its elevated position gives sea views to Old Harry Rocks or Durlston Bay from many rooms, and the enclosed, sunny gardens that wrap around the house are a great spot to relax and enjoy a barbecue or a game of croquet or badminton. There are three large reception rooms – a dining hall, a sunny lounge and a music room. The kitchen and utility are fully equipped to a professional standard. Upstairs are six bedrooms – four very large family rooms and two normal sized double rooms that were originally for servants – plus two family bathrooms and one en suite.

The house is extremely well equipped, with lots of books, games and toys, as well as a full-size pool table and a large TV with Netflix. There's a piano and other instruments and Sonos speakers with a free Google Play account.

The town centre, with its sandy beaches, cafes, restaurants and galleries, is a short walk downhill. In summer a bus service stops right outside the gate. The Jurassic Coast is on the doorstep and there are great walks from the door to Durlston National Nature Reserve, Anvil Point lighthouse and beyond. There is plenty of on-street parking on two sides of the house. Dogs are very welcome.

Great house, well equipped

We were seven adults, four children and two dogs and The Mount really couldn't have been better for us. It's a great house and excellently well equipped. Elaine couldn't have been more helpful both with our multitude of questions during the booking process nor when we had questions and little issues during our stay. The new off-road parking is designed to accommodate two cars but we found it could easily take three as long as we organised departures and anyway there's plenty of room to park on the road. It's worth investigating the cupboards and drawers around the house because there's often something surprising or useful inside. We didn't use everything but it was exciting to see what was there. The attention to detail is amazing... even the guitars and ukuleles hanging on the wall were in tune when we arrived!

Family spring holiday

Having read through all the other reviews, I can find no words to add to the glowing compliments , which are all so true. There were 17 in our party, including two toddlers and two aged grandparents, and we truly had a marvellous stay. The secure enclosed garden was a huge bonus for the children, who loved the swing and trampoline as well as outdoor games all provided; and all the mums drooled over the enormous washing machine! Despite our large party the house had plenty of quiet spots as it was so capacious.Elaine and Carl were kindness itself when there was a small domestic problem, and came to fix it straightaway. We would recommend this house, and the gentle town of Swanage with its beautiful coastline, to anyone.

Family Celebration

An excellent venue for our family get together, 13 of us covering 3 generations. The house provided the space that allowed us to be 1 but also provide private space for quieter moments. The standard of facilities were excellent and the welcome we received was very a lovely bonus. All our party had a great time and would highly recommend the venue and also the town of Swanage. A wonderful, grand old house with a lovely homely feel.

A fabulous period property in a great location, with great walks from the door. It is superbly equipped and the owners have clearly put much thought into the small details that make it feel so homely. The beds are extremely comfortable with high quality linens and the kitchen was really well stocked. It's fantastic to have olive oil, salt and pepper, dishwasher tablets etc readily available, which is not that usual for a self catering property. The pool table was a real hi-light and even lured the teenagers away from their phones for a few hours! All in all, it is a fantastic property which we would highly recommend.

Wonderful House, Perfect Location.

We are a group of 12 retired friends and colleagues who meet once a year so finding a property to suit everyone can be a challenge. Not with The Mount! It is extremely welcoming, full of character and has been beautifully renovated and decorated. The kitchen is fully equipped and a pleasure to use. The beds are supremely comfortable and we also very much enjoyed the log fire! We will certainly be recommending The Mount to family and friends.

A wonderful country house experience

We stayed for 4 nights at the Mount and had a really great time. The charming, spacious Edwardian house is beautiful and brilliantly equipped with all mod-cons and coped really well with eighteen of us staying including a baby and a dog! More joined us for a formal meal on one evening and we coped easily with the numbers. The house is very spacious and comfortable with every attention being given to the quality of linen and all the extra details that give the whole house 5-star appeal. We were particularly taken with the care and attention given to décor, pictures, books and the music room that give the house a really homely feel. The owners, Elaine and Carl, made every effort to make sure that our stay was perfect and we look forward to returning for another wonderful break.

Two mins' walk to cliff top coastal path and Swanage Downs with views across the bay to Old Harry Rock, Isle of Wight.

Two mins' walk & then a bit of a scramble down to a pebbled 'wild beach' – our kids' favourite

Five to 10 mins' walk down to main sandy Swanage beach (you can take the road, or the Downs route). This is a family beach with Punch and Judy in summer, new beach huts for hire, ice-cream kiosks, showers and WCs

20 mins walk to far beach, beyond the huts, quiet, wild & sandy

Further Details:

Purbeck is packed with things to do: stone carving, dry-stone walling, coasteering, kayaking, sailing, rowing, diving, snorkelling, horse-riding and trekking (along the beach at Studland), birdwatching boat trips, botany and nature walks, historical walks, astronomy events (Durlston Country Park has its own observatory), sea fishing, golf, mini golf, tennis, sea swimming, galleries and exhibitions. And of course there is the steam railway, puffing from Swanage town centre to Corfe Castle. The bus that stops right outside The Mount during the summer will drop you at the station. You can walk along the top of the chalk ridge to Corfe Castle, then catch the train home again.

Or catch an open-top bus to Studland and across the chain ferry to Sandbanks and Bournemouth town centre.

Swanage is known for its musical events including the annual jazz festival, blues festivals, folk festival and classical music performances throughout the year.

The Mowlem Theatre by the main beach shows films regularly and it's great to be able to walk home from the cinema.

There are numerous pubs in the town and nearby. Our favourites in Swanage are the relaxed Red Lion and The Black Swan – plus the lively Snack Bar for a cocktail. The Scott Arms at Kingston (a short drive or bus ride away) is our favourite out-of-towner. They do a great roast and there are wonderful views from the garden over Corfe Castle.

Lots of restaurants to choose from too - including the relatively recent and excellent additions of The Canteen and Love Cake.

At peak times we offer weeks only, running from Friday to Friday. Short breaks for £1600 are available outside school holidays. Breaks can either be taken midweek Monday to Friday (4 nights) or at weekends Friday to Monday (3 nights).

Changeover Day:
Please arrive after 4pm and be ready to leave by 10am, to give staff the time they need to complete the changeover. Due to the size of The Mount and consequent staffing considerations, changeover days are Fridays and Mondays only.
