All this makes The Green cottage the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle whilst being a short journey away from the sea-side resort of Whitby, known as 'The Jewel Of The Coast'. The cottage is double glazed throughout, and thermostatic controlled electric radiators through-out. The cottage is over 2 storeys, lovingly refurbished to provide comfortable, well equipped, home from home accommodation for a maximum of six guests. Ceiling spotlights are in each room. The water is heated by an immersion heater, controlled by a 24hr timer. The doors are all natural wood, to add to the rural feel of this cottage. All electricity, bed linen and towels are included in the hire charge. All the beds are made up ready for your arrival. A welcome tray of tea/coffee/sugar and milk is provided for you. As you enter ‘The Green’, via the back door, you step into the spacious, part tiled kitchen with a dining area. The large fully fitted kitchen has numerous fitted units; the tall unit houses the ironing board, vacuum cleaner and cleaning utensils. There are 4 large windows, one of which on the horizon, you can see the North Sea. Included in the kitchen is a dishwasher, microwave, fridge with ice box, full sized electric cooker with 4 hot plates and cooker hood, accompanied by stainless steel pans, with sufficient cooking utensils also a kettle and 4 slice toaster. The washing machine is located in the garage. There is a full co-ordinated compliment of crockery, and cutlery, along with wine glasses. The oblong pine table and 6 chairs all add to the homely feel of this kitchen. A charming feature in the kitchen is the exposed original Yorkshire stone wall. A selection of ‘boxed games’ are provided for you, along with leaflets of activities etc in and around the area. The spacious ground floor, family bathroom is partly tiled out with white and blue tiles, and has an exposed original Yorkshire stone wall. The white bathroom suite has an electric shower fitted over the bath, with a glass shower screen and there is an electrically heated towel rail. Back downstairs, and to the front of the cottage you will find a delightful garden room, where you can take in the view towards Newholm, or open the door to enjoy the garden, lawn at one side of the path and paved at the other side with garden furniture for your alfresco eating. The garden room is fully carpeted and furnished out with bistro chairs and a bistro table. There is ample space for suit-cases and storage under the stairs. The high chair is stored here should you need it, but I do not provide a travel cot, sorry. At the gable end of the cottage are large garages exclusively for you to park your vehicles. 'The Green’ at Newholm Green, is situated at the end of a single track council maintained road, which is a cul-de-sac. With open fields and countryside around the cottage. This is a secluded area with Mulgrave Castle nearby. There is a footpath opposite the garage which leads to Sandsend. Newholm in its origin was an Anglian settlement, surrounded by an oval shape of Danish farm-steads and clearings. In King William 1st Doomsday book it was recorded as “Neuecham”. Miss Linskill, the celebrated Whitby novelist lived in a cottage towards the bottom of Newholm, now known as “Cleveden Cottage”. The village of Newholm is a pretty little village located in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. The village has a pond and ‘The Beehive Inn’, a public house situated in the middle of the village. ‘PennyClare’ is new to Newholm, with a tea room "full of everything delicious" and a “barn full of everything gorgeous”.

Previous guests have described this property as the best they have stayed in, and a hidden Jem.

About VICTORIA HEWISON

We offer 'home from home' breaks and are on hand should you require any assistance.

We take great pride in 'looking after' this gorgeous property to try to ensure you have a wonderful holiday.

Newholm is ideal for both a coastal and a country holiday. Approximately 1.5miles from the picturesque Yorkshire coastline, also known as the dinosaur coast. On the edge of the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors, in mid to late summer these are covered with the heather in full bloom.

Attractive villages are scattered in and around this area. Newholm is a peaceful village, yet just minutes away from local tourist attractions – North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway at Grosmont, (used in the Harry Potter film). Goathland, a beautiful village, home to Aidensfield in the popular ‘Heartbeat’ series.

To the South of Whitby lies the village of Robin Hood's Bay which is a fantastic location for a day out at the beach. With many winding streets and alleys in the old village, a selection of pubs, shops & galleries as well as a beach which provides both sandy expanses stretching South to Ravenscar & thousands of rock pools to explore.

North of Whitby you'll find a selection of coastal, quaint villages, including Sandsend, Staithes & Runswick Bay offering wonderful beaches and quaint villages, appearing much as they did 100 years ago.

The Cleveland Way footpath follows this stretch of coastline enabling a walk along the coast providing some of the finest in the county.

Whitby to Robin Hoods Bay is approximately 7 miles, & takes about 2-3 hours to complete.

VICTORIA HEWISON purchased this cottage in 1960

Why VICTORIA HEWISON chose Whitby

We are from the local area and have spent our lifetime living in North Yorkshire. We would be more than happy to share our knowledge of the area with you should you require it.

The Green cottage is almost 200 years old, and has been lovingly refurbished to a very high standard.

The location of The Green offers peace and tranquility, or a few miles away are all the usual holiday amenities.

Newholm is approximately 1.5 miles from Whitby.

Whitby has been voted one of the top tourist attractions, and is known as 'The Jewel of The North'. The East and West side of Whitby is spanned by a swing bridge. The Historic Abbey home of the 7th century Abbess, St Hilda, this inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula. The interesting St Mary’s Church, which is reached by the famous ‘199’ steps. The ‘Magpie’ café (Rick Stein’s best place for fish and chips). Many of the streets of Whitby and the surrounding area are immortalised in the photography of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, these can be seen in a gallery on the West side.

What makes this cottage unique

'The Green' is located in the quiet village of Newholm.

No parking issues here as garages at the gable end are for your exclusive use, and weather permitting you may park more cars on the grassed area at the rear of the cottage. As we are only 3 quarters of a mile from the park and ride it makes it easy to get into the centre of Whitby. The cottage is situated about 1.5 miles outside of Whitby, a picturesque Yorkshire fishing town providing many wonderful attractions, including the famous Abbey, Whalebone Arch, the East and West piers, St Marys Church and the 199 steps, in addition to many shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants and an extensive beach.

Whatever the weather you'll always find something to do in Whitby. With several boats offering short cruises down the coast, or fishing trips of various lengths, the harbour is always a hive of activity. Sample some fish and chips from one of the many restaurants or takeaways. Have a look around the cobbled streets of the old town and the market square.

The Esk Valley has been made famous as the filming location for ITV's 'Heartbeat' programme. Just a few minutes drive away from The Green cottage you'll find a selection of other beautiful villages located on the banks of the River Esk which flows 28 miles from its source in Westerdale before emerging at Whitby. Villages such as Goathland, Glaisdale, Danby, Lealholm, Egton, Castleton and Sandsend offer a range of amenities, including welcoming village pubs & shops, and are the perfect place to begin a walk into the North Yorkshire Moors.

The North Yorkshire Moors steam railway passes through the village of Grosmont on its way between Pickering & Whitby.

With spectacular views, picturesque villages & a wide choice of footpaths & trails to follow & enjoy. The Esk valley is one of Yorkshires most beautiful areas and certainly worth exploring whilst staying in the area. I may have a special offer for the dates you are looking for, so please make an enquiry with me.

Very clean and comfortable- perfect!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was immaculate and comfortable with plenty of room for 2 adults and 3 children. It looked like it had just been decorated and was spotless. One of the bedrooms and the bathroom are on the ground floor which was perfect for Grandma! It takes minutes to drive into Whitby and was nice to have the peace and quiet to come back to. Also parking is expensive in town so it was a bonus to park up here. The kids loved the garden and little sun room (best room for Wifi!)and the village even has some Llamas to visit. The beach at Sandsend is a mile away.

Stella was on hand if needed but gave you your space to relax. We had a lovely stay, thanks!

Lovely stay.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is a lovely cosy house in a really nice quiet setting, while we were there the weather was rubbish but had it been better we would have made the most of the lovely gardens too, maybe next time. The house was spotlessly clean and really homely and well equipped. Only five minutes from Whitby it's a great base to explore the East coast. Looking forward to returning in the not too distant future.

Ideallic cottage for relaxing break closeto Whitby

  • 5 of 5

First impressions count, met by the friendly & helpful owner Stella & just new we had picked the right place. The cottage is tucked away in the sleepy village Newholm, peace & quiet, beautiful views, yet minutes drive from Whitby etc.

The cottage is superbly looked after and attention is paid to every detail from the decor inside to the gardens outside. The large kitchen would easily accomodate a family of 6 with everything required for self catering. Stella kindly left us sufficient coffee, tea & sugar for our 3 night stay & even left us a welcoming bottle of wine. The spacious bathroom is modern, clean and again the little touches included add to the welcome. Each of the three bedrooms were again spotlessly clean and welcoming, furnished very tastefully with added cushions & throws to compliment each bedrooms decor, no detail overlooked. Both Stella, her husband and her daughter were extremely friendly and helpful. We stayed there for our daughters wedding weekend & 4 groups of their friends also used the caravans Stella has in the next field, each of them were welcomed in the same friendly manner. Highly recommended. Thank you. Regards Carole
