This brick built cattle barn was converted to a 4 bedroomed home in 2000 and has now been redecorated throughout and re-equipped to make a comfortable and very private holiday home sleeping eight people. Ideally the barn will suit a family or 3 couples looking for a rural base to relax or explore Somerset. Situated private grounds about a mile from Evercreech village, Westbrook Barn has private parking next to its fruit garden and a separate walled garden making it very safe for children. The Glastonbury Festival site is just 3 miles away, the Royal Bath and West Showground about 1 mile away, the internationally renowned Hauser and Wirth Gallery is in the Saxon town of Bruton 3 miles over the hills. Cheddar Gorge is 12 miles away, Bath and Bristol are both within an hours drive.
About Judith and Tony: we have lived at Old Westbrook Farm since 1989, working an hour away in Bristol and keeping a small flock of mostly rare breed sheep, a little herd of dexter cows, a few hens who walk all over the place and Kiri our new, young Gloucester Old Spot/Kune Kune pig, who in January 2017 had 13 piglets!
We try to make sure that our guests are very comfortable, have complete privacy but are welcome to to wander round the fields and the orchard
In 2011 we planted about 150 trees - mostly old varieties of apple. In 2013 we bought Westbrook Barns next door, which has a large 4 bedroomed brick barn.
Altogether the Farm and Barns have about 15 acres. Guests are welcome to walk around the fields. When we are on holiday with our children, we like somewhere very private. So the barns are completely private. Unless you like someone to show you around, you won't see us unless you walk through to the fields or need something.
Tony German purchased this barn in 1980
We bought Old Westbrook Farm because Tony is from Somerset and we wanted to bring the children up in a rural area with space to keep some animals, but with easy access to Bath, Bristol, Wells - England's smallest city, Somerton the Ancient Capital of Wessex, Frome and nearby Longleat, Cheddar caves and Wookey Hole, the Mendip and Quantock Hills. As well as the hills and lovely towns, we have the beautiful Somerset levels, we are just 3 miles from the Glastonbury Festival, the same distance from the Hauser and Wirth Gallery and the At the Chapel restaurant in Bruton, a stones throw from the Royal Bath and West Showground, great country pubs including the Bell here in Evercreech and the Queen Victoria in Priddy, not far from Cheddar Gorge.
Westbrook Barn seems to be very popular as a place for family get togethers - often 3 generations using Somerset as a convenient, as well as beautiful place to meet. Some people are using the Westbrook barn for a friends reunion or getaway. And we are pleased to have had people from Netherlands, France, Germany, Spain and the USA staying here to explore the English countryside.
This year - 2016 - we are converting the old Stone Barn for holiday use. It will be ready in early 2017. The Stone Barn will again be completely private (its own parking and gardens. It will have 3 en suite bedrooms plus a very large central room which combines kitchen, dining area and comfortable sitting area with a woodburning stove.
The property has its own private gardens with Barbecue and outside dining area. It is within small private grounds so very safe for children. Guests are welcome to walk around ten acres of fields to see the cows, sheep and pigs. A welcome pack of local produce is provided plus free logs for the open fire in the sitting room - and all the modern conveniences most people would expect including wifi.
Though we live next door you won't see us unless you need something - or you bump into us walking in the fields. In the house you'll find lots of suggestions of things to do in the county - galleries, pubs, theatre, walks, canal and rail trips, picturesque drives, cinemas, where to see wildlife and learn about local history. Our main aim is to ensure you have a comfortable, relaxing time in our favourite county. At present (August 2015) our oldest animal is Annie the Gloucester Old Spot pig, plus a couple of piglets. We have 4 Exmoor Horn sheep including one ram, 3 Hebridean ewes plus their 5 lambs and 3 Castlemilk Moorit ewes plus their 3 lambs. We have 10 hens and 9 Dexter cattle. At the moment there seems to be a deer in the orchard most times we go down there! Most days there are buzzards overhead. Some times in the year you can drive to the Somerset Levels (under 30 minutes drive) to see huge flocks of starlings roosting.
This is a very well equipped holiday home with high a standard of fittings and was very clean.
On arrival there was a nice 'welcome pack' including a bottle of wine. The owners are very friendly and provided eggs from the 'in house' chickens but they were never intrusive.
The 'L' shaped barn is beautifully laid out and has plenty of room, even for 8 persons.
Located in a quiet but interesting area and there is a really good pub, the Bell Inn, about a mile away in the village serving local bitters and cider and very good meals.
We hired both barns for a family get together over christmas. The owners were very helpful, answering questions and ensuring we had everthing we needed to celebrate in style.
A very comfortable, warm and spacious property. The owners were very prompt to respond with any queries and extremely helpful. We had everything we needed and our party of seven enjoyed it so much we want to return in the not too distant future.
Very spacious and comfortable. Very good for visiting Wells and Glastonbury. Would highly recommend for families or friends
Judith (owner) was very friendly and extremely helpful. The layout of the barn is great for groups and looking out onto the garden from the patio doors in the bedrooms makes these rooms very airy. We don't think the website photos do the barn justice.
It was a pleasure to spend a week in this property; it is very spacious (ideal for children), well equipped, warm and welcoming and a treat to return to at the end of a busy day. In a good location for visiting Wells, Bath, Wookey Hole, Cheddar Gorge and just over an hour away from Lyme Regis. There are also two National Trust properties 30 minutes drive away. We had a great time and would recommend the barn
Travel:
Nearest airport is Bristol. We can arrange taxis to London Heathrow or Bristol airport. Trains from Paddington stop at Castle Cary 3 miles away. Trains from Waterloo stop at Gillingham 11 miles away. The property is a mile from the village and a car is essential - though we can recommend an excellent local private hire firm if needed. There is a Coop, Bakery and Chemist in the village. The nearest supermarkets (Tesco and Aldi) are 3 miles away in Shepton Mallet. Waitrose, Morrisons and Tesco are all in Wells, 7 miles drive away).
