This unique riverside property, consisting of a detached 200-year-old 5 bedroom converted wharf building (known as Halfpenny Wharf), together with separate home cinema room, is located directly on the River Torridge with 35m of river frontage and enjoys unequaled panoramic views of Bideford and its famous old bridge. The house has been completely refurbished in a light and airy contemporary style whilst retaining much of its original charm and character. Equipped to a very high standard and arranged over three floors, there is plenty of space for family and friends to gather, but also to escape to a quiet corner. Gardens with river frontage surround the holiday property including a kitchen/herb garden (please feel free to help yourselves) and extensive paved area which offers plenty of space for al fresco dining, summer barbecues, making pizzas in the wood fired oven and for the children to let off steam. The panoramic views from the living areas and all of the bedrooms are breathtaking, looking directly over over the river and the ancient Bideford Bridge. A separate stone outbuilding has been converted to a Home Cinema Room with HD Projector, 120 inch screen, surround sound and Xbox 360 and Concept rowing machine. A perfect place for teenagers and children to hang-out away from the main house. Fibre optic WiFi throughout. There is private off street parking for at least 6 cars. The property is situated in a perfect location to enjoy all the amenities that Bideford and its surroundings have to offer. We are less than a minutes walk from the Tarka Trail, an off road cycling and walking trail that follows the old railway line and runs from Braunton to just outside Okehampton. Bideford’s shops, 5 minutes walk over the bridge, include a mix of high street chains and independent shops alongside an old pannier market which has markets on a Tuesday and Saturday. There is also the riverside food and produce market on alternate Saturdays and the Burton Art Gallery and its wonderful Café du Parc. The estuary villages of Appledore and Instow are 3 miles away, both with great pubs and restaurants and interesting shops, and they are connected by a river ferry during high tides. Instow has an expansive sandy beach and sand dunes to enjoy. Westward Ho! and its beautiful sandy beach is under 10 minutes drive. Further afield are the popular surf beaches of Croyde, Saunton and Woolacombe, the wonderful moors of Dartmoor and Exmoor as well as a whole host of National Trust properties including Arlington Court and RHS Garden at Rosemoor. For those seeking some excitement or fanily days out there is the Big Sheep and Milky Way Adventure Parks, Skern Lodge, High Ropes and The Ultimate High Centre. Westward Ho! has one of the oldest Links Gold Courses in the Country. Bikes and Kayaks can be hired from Bideford Cycle, Surf and Kayak Hire which is located about 200 yards away. Instow Yacht Club is 5 minutes down the road and there are a number of local companies providing surf lessons, fishing trips, and paddle boarding.

About the Owner

We moved from London to North Devon over 15 years ago in order to raise our 3 children in beautiful North Devon where they have had access to all the outdoors activities you could wish for. My husband is a geologist working in Devon whilst I work freelance as an arts consultant.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time at your home and really enjoyed ourselves. It was great location, easy to stroll in to Bideford, ideal for access to all the coastal resorts and of course near to two pubs! Great house for families, ‎a really sociable kitchen and outside space. Hospitable owners who made every effort for us to be comfortable and provided excellent information about local amenities.

Amazing property in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We spent New Year in this fantastic property right by the river in Bideford. The house was so welcoming, spacious and incredibly well equipped. We couldn't recommend it highly enough. The owner was really helpful and provided lots of information about local restaurants and things to do in the area.

Perfect Pizza!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect location right on the river and a superb base to visit the area. The open plan layout of the house was great for our family, with the kitchen to dining area great for social cooking (and drinking). Outside is great - gardens on both sides and the river immediately over the wall. To top it off there is a pizza oven in the corner of the terrace which allows you to bake the most amazing pizzas. Bedrooms were great - good beds and bedding and the bathrooms perfect. Tech-wise, the house is rammed with it and thats not including the cinema / video games room which is a huge value add for teenagers wanting to hang out and do something different.

Lisa met us at the property to give us a quick intro and was at the end of a text message when we wanted to find something out. We took advantage of the enormous range of cookery books that she has. Big thanks Lisa, the way you have set everything up made the holiday stress free.

Watching the tide come in and out with the sun setting in the distance was really relaxing, particularly with the view of the old bridge. Bideford as a town is great... with lots of little cafes, pop up restaurants, health shops etc etc.

We had teenagers and a younger child and they all really enjoyed the holiday.

Many thanks

Location

From the Owner

We fell in love with Halfpenny Wharf the first time we saw the property whilst driving over Bideford Long Bridge back in the mid 1990s. Over the last 18 years we have slowly converted the house and gardens into the unique property it is today. North Devon has so much to offer with its close proximity to great beaches and the amazing landscapes of Dartmoor and Exmoor.

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

There are river views from every room. Visitors can take a boat trip down the river from Appledore or further afield to Lundy Island. The pretty estuary villages of Instow and Appledore are 3 miles away and the sandy beach of Westward Ho! which is a family favourite is just 3 miles away. The golden sandy surf beaches of Saunton, Croyde and Woolacombe are a 30 minute drive across the Taw Estuary.

Travel:

Tiverton Parkway mainline station is an hour away by car. Barnstaple train station is 20 minutes drive and offers trains along the Taw Valley to Exeter where you can connect to mainline services. The South West's two main airports, Bristol and Exeter, are 2 hours and 1.5 hours away respectively. There is a frequent bus service from close by the house and a number of taxi firms based in the town.
