About the property

Villa Limonaia le Ravere in Gargnano, Lake Garda, Totally Private Location Close to town and port, sleeps 18-21 in 9 bedrooms

This exclusive, and utterly private setting, first built in the 1700s, provides a fascinating mix of history, comfort and breathtaking beauty. It is a designated historical site, protected by the Italian patrimony preservation authority, and is under consideration as a UNESCO world heritage site. It has been featured in many architectural and design magazines.

Live immersed in history and nature, with breathtaking lake views, stunning original stonework, antique terracotta floors, exposed wooden beams. The villa sleeps 18-21 in 9 bedrooms divided in three distinct houses, with a private pool, BBQ facilities, and plenty of indoor and outdoor spaces to relax, play, and enjoy. Wifi throughout, Flat screen TV, SKY satellite channels, ping pong, one AC unit per house, 3 kitchens and 3 lounges, and plenty of private parking.

Just 600m above the town Gargnano, with shops restaurants and ferry port, this property gardens are filled with a delightful lemon groves or "limonaia" where still today lemons are grown (and can be picked and enjoyed by guests!).

The property consists of three buildings which are all rented together as a whole – it is rented only as a single property, not shared. In all three houses, there are a total of

- 9 bedrooms (sleeps 18-21) and 6.5 bathrooms

- 3 indoor lounge areas, 3 indoor dining areas,(one seating 16+), 2 outdoor dining areas with BBQs (one seats 16, the other 20) and a built-in outdoor pizza oven

- large private pool (20mx4m), furnished with loungers, and many relax areas in the garden, furnished and filled with fruiting citrus trees

- 10000 sqm of private gardens including a private creek and waterfall

- 2 fully equipped kitchens and one kitchenette. Kitchens have oven, stove, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, toaster, all dishes and utensils, french press coffee makers. Nespresso coffee machine in the main kitchen

- 3 TVs, all with digital cable and one with SKY satellite full service channels.

- Internet with Wifi throughout

- parking for 8 cars

The three houses are all connected by the terraces of the gardens and lemon groves. All houses have their own lounges, kitchen areas and dining areas.

The "main house" was built in the early 1700s. It was the original farmers' residence, still with the original hearth fireplace used to heat the house and cook hundreds of years ago. In this house, there are 4 double bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms and one half bathroom. The inside dining area here can seat up to 16 or more people. Just outside the main kitchen door is the outdoor eating area with seating for 20+, barbecue, and the most breathtaking lake views. Out the other side of the kitchen, there is a children's play area, sitting area and ping pong table. Downstairs from the kitchen you find the lounge area, with the antique original hearth fireplace and many select and rare antique furnishings.

The "casello" sleeps 6 and is the most recently renovated building. Here there are 3 double bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms. The dining area seats 4-6, and opens onto the gardens with outdoor eating for 16+. This house has the biggest lounge, with seating for up to 10, and TV with DVD/cable TV and SKY satellite.

The "Garconniere" sleeps 4-6 in one double bedroom and a family suite, open to the loft lounge above, with 2 singles and a double sofa bed, with 2 full bathrooms. The family suite has a tree growing up through the room out the roof! There is a small kitchenette with dining area for 4-6, and in the gardens just outside there is an outdoor built in pizza oven. The garconniere is a romantic island of charm and design, separated from the other two houses by the gardens of the lemon grove.

In keeping with the style and era in which the house was built, and the historical protection on the original structure of the property, the bedrooms and bathrooms are small, many with exposed wooden beams in the ceilings, exposed stone arches, and interesting unexpected spaces and corners.

Each house individually opens onto separate terraced gardens of the lemon grove, each with private gardens, lake views, and sitting areas. In total, there are 5 terraced garden levels in the lemon grove, all connected by external staircases.

PLEASE NOTE:

1) The road to the villa is VERY steep, and not appropriate for some cars. We have detailed instructions which you should read before choosing your rental car

2) The villa is filled with staircases. People with limited mobility will have difficulty in this villa.

About Christina Ayer

We use the professional team at Holiday Garda to manage all aspects of our guests' experience, from the booking and pre-arrival care, professional attention to every detail of the villa's preparation for your arrival, including top quality hotel linens and professional cleaning crews, to full concierge service and complete range of special services in the villa and local area while you are here.

The published prices are complete, and include both the rent which is paid directly to the owner, and the servicing of the villa and your stay, which is paid directly to Holiday Garda.

Cristina, Novella and Christina, the founders of Holiday Garda together with their crew of "holiday angels" work personally at each villa and directly with all of our guests to make their holiday villa a real home away from home. We believe that the best holidays should have the independence and freedom of self-catering, together with the luxury care and service of a quality hotel.

Why Christina Ayer chose Lake Garda

This property is so extraordinary, and has so many special attributes that make it unique in its genre -- one of the last remaining original Limonaia structures that literally define the territory, called the "Riviera dei Limoni". It has its own private waterfall on a path through the woods on the estate. It has the oldest largest olive tree in all of the Lake Garda area. It has a tree growing inside the Annexe, up through two stories and out of the roof. It has its own private spring, and the crystal-clear, fresh water from the spring is supplied directly to the kitchen of the Main house and comes out of a tap.

What makes this villa unique

The Lemon trees of the groves fruit and flower all year long -- lemons have no specific season. A plethora of fresh lemons, oranges, and mandarines are available for guests to pick right outside the kitchen doors almost any time of the year. The gardens also have plenty of fresh herbs for the cooking pots.

One amazing place.

  • 5 of 5

One of the most amazing and unique properties we have ever rented. Once you get over the road that leads up to the house you will be thoroughly entranced with the views and the property itself. We were a group of 12 which ranged in age from 32 to 84. If you really want to get a flavor of the region you should investigate the options of travel to local towns by way of boat (great tours from Salo just down the road) as well as car to Verona, Trento and many other places. And Garganano is special by itself if you choose to really look into the local flavors. I would recommend anyone and everyone rent this place for a week or more. You will not be disappointed.

great place over the lake

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the Limonaia, no question about it.

the property was clean and well maintained. The HolidayAngels from HolidayGarda Managment responded quickly to every question, grazie mille!

After all we recommend an update on kitchen equipment (at least main house), i.e. coffee machine, wineglasses, useful tools like sharp knife(s), working pair of scissors. It was possible to cook on our own, but ist was not that fun like it should be.

And yes, we recommend the Limonaia to friends and family, a really great place to be and meet over the lake.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you had a great holiday, and hope to see you again! We will look into the issues you mention as regards the kitchen, because there is as standard provision in the main kitchen a filter coffee machine and 2 french press caraffes, and french press coffee makers in both of the other two kitchens. There are provided over 30 wine glasses through the three different kitchens, in the main house they are in the cupboard behind the kitchen, so maybe you didn't find them? and we bought new sharp knives for each kitchen at the beginning of the season...but we don't cut with them ourselves, so maybe they were dulled or maybe guests can sometimes move stuff from one kitchen to the other, so its possible that all the knives were collected in the casello instead of the main house, or some such...In any case, we will look into it right away and put all things in their right spots -- thank you so much for the feedback, because only living in the space can you tell things like how sharp the knives are or if the wine glasses are too hard to find! If no one tells us, we can't fix it, so we do appreciate it very much! Until next time!! Christina

We'll be back!!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most amazing holiday at the Limonaia le Ravere this year, 15 of us, all friends getting together for a special time. The location is just amazing, the views absolutely breathtaking, and the houses comfortable. A lot of fuss was made about the steep road before we arrived, but I am from the Rockies and to my eyes the road was a doddle!! Seen much worse. The gardens are so special, and it was super cool to go out in the mornings and pluck lemons and oranges from the trees for fresh squeezed morning juice. The town of Gargnagno is wonderful, small but complete. We will definitely be back! Thanks to the Holiday Garda team for all your help and impeccable service!

A perfect place for a family vacation

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic and perfect location for a family vacation.

We had a wonderful 13 people family vacation in Limonaia le Ravere on April 2015. The beautiful houses and surroundings were all we wished for. The 5 children could play freely in the huge magnificent traces between the houses and around the beautiful huge pool. The 3 houses allowed privacy for each of the family divisions when it was required while the shared space and the traces with the breathtaking views of the lake and mountains were perfect for the whole family to get together. The houses were extremely clean and equipped with everything we needed either for cooking, sleeping, bathing or laundry.

The managing crew were lovely and very kind, they were very helpful and responsive whenever we needed them, had a question or needed a recommendation.

We would definitely go back there in the next Garda lake family vacation!

The funny and joyful Greenberg Family

The town of Gargnano is about 400m down the road, a city steeped in history and charm. Gargnano started as a monastery in the 1200s, where the monks grew lemons. And from here begins the long and fascinating history of the limonaie of Gargnano. The town blossomed and grew, lemons its principle industry, and it was completely hedged in by mountains and lakes, isolated with access only from the lake until the 1930s when the lakeside highway was built. As a result Gargnano has developed and maintained an extraordinary and unique local flavour and charm.

The Limonaia le Ravere is a Designated Historical Site, built in the 1700s and protected by the region as well as the Italian fine art and historical site patrimony authority. The western coast of Lake Garda is called the "Riviera dei Limoni", because of the tradition and history of lemon cultivation in the area in these extraodinary Lemon grove structures, called "Limonaie". Adapted very specifically to the mountainous terrain, the Limonaia are very special structures, unique to this area, and for hundreds of years, the economy of this area was based on Lemon cultivation.

Limonaia le Ravere one of the very few Limonaia still maintaining its orginal structures and original agricultural systems, all still functioning. And it is the only Limonaia available for private rental. This is one of those places where the endeavour of dedicated people over hundreds of years has established a perfect balance between the natural world and production, ecology and economy, creating beautiful and harmonious landscapes in the process. The adaptation of cultivation to the land that supports it creates an architecture that becomes a part of the landscape itself.

This is the beauty of the Limonaia, and the resultant characteristics of the property are essential to its character and its beauty -- this property is not for guests who want a modern, open space, easy and new luxury property! But if you want to live immersed in traditional, local history, and the splendid beauty of the territory working in harmony with agriculture then this is place for you!

About the local area, distances from the villa:

The town of Gargnano, with a ferryboat port is about 800m down the road, with all services, small local shops and restaurants. The town of Toscolano, with all services, about 6km away, has interesting places of interest, including ancient Roman ruins and the Duomo built on the original site of an ancient Roman Temple. 12km to Salo.

The villa is perched right over the village, and an easy walk down to all the shops, restaurants, pizzerias, etc of Gargnano. The walk back up the very steep mountain road, though, requires a strong heart and great fitness!

Though only a small village, Gargnano boasts not one, but two Michelline star restaurants: Villa Feltrinelli and Tartugha. And for less formal nights out, there are a number of excellent restaurants and pizzerias, some right on the waterfront with lakeside tables.

About 5km down the road is Toscolano, and here you will find interesting places of interest including ancient Roman ruins and the duomo built on the original site of a ancient Roman Temple. All of Toscolano was once a single roman villa, a country estate for a patrician family from Rome, and Roman remnants can be seen in the most unusual places.

6km from the villa, the splendid 'valle delle cartiere' is a fly fishing reserve with wonderful hiking trails completely immersed in nature. The visitor centre and museum is located in the now ghost town of the original paper factory from the 1800s.

Down the road from Gargnano about 12km to Gardone, and you will find the Vittoriale museum, official residence of Gabriele D'annunzio and a fascinating testament to the futurist movement in italy in the early 1900s. it is also an open air theatre, with many important concert dates during the summer season.

Take the ferry from the port of Gargnano to a number of fun day trip destinations, including the panoramic gondola up the Monte Baldo from Malcesine, and the towns of Riva, Limone, Salo, Sirmione or Desenzano.

About 1 hour away, by Peschiera del Garda, you will find a nest of world famous theme parks including Gardaland and Canevaworld, a safari park and zoo, famous botanical gardens, and a wonderful hot springs lake at Lasize.

For those with an archeological/anthropological bent -- and for spelunkers too -- the villa is not far from the famous caves and neolithic cave paintings of the Val Camonica.

Verona, with its opera season, ancient roman arena as well as Juliet's balcony, is about 60km away. Venice is about 160km away, and Milan about 175km away, both within easy day trip distance.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The historical 18th century design of the house is characterized by its small bedrooms and bathrooms, with its many unique and characteristic nooks and crannies, and its exposed stone and brick walls and arches, and original 18th century wooden beams. This house is not ideal for groups that need modern open space designs and new modern structures, but perfect for those that want to experience history, beauty and the most profound of local traditions. Its spectacular view and amazingly private location is due to its position on the mountainside just above the historic centre of Gargnano. You need to take note that the last 300 meters of the road to the premises of the house are very steep. It is paved and safe, and most cars can make it, nevertheless, less powerful cars should turn off the AC before the ascent; methane cars should switch to petrol. RVs or cars with trailers cannot make the climb, and it can be challenging in heavily loaded people carriers. 9 seaters can't make it, and 7 seaters can make it, but may have to take two trips for luggage and people rather than be too heavy for the engine The limonaia is immersed in nature, 10000 sqm private park, with stunning lake views from every angle. The terraced gardens are a traditional lemon grove, and the beautiful blooming and fruiting lemon trees define the outdoor spaces of this property, filling the air with the song of birds and scent of citrus. and of course fresh organic lemons, oranges and mandarines there for the picking and enjoyment of guests! A path into the private woods leads to a stream with a private waterfall, a perfect spot for solitary reflection or even a picnic just a few meters away from the house. The path is steep and can be slippery, so must be travelled with care, and at your own risk! The property also boasts the largest, oldest, olive tree on lake garda, as certified by the forest authority. And the gardens are also rich with herbs including rosemary, thyme, sage, and the largest, oldest, bay tree I have ever seen.
