Hathaway is an impressive Victorian house situated in one of the most enviable positions anywhere in Cornwall. It sits on the west side of Port Isaac’s picturesque harbour and boasts probably the best view in the village. It has views over the bay, down onto the beach, and over the rooftops of the village and the North Cornish coastline as far as Tintagel and even Hartland Point in Devon on a clear day. Hathaway, a third part of a grand looking house, was built over 120 years ago by a sea captain, who regularly sailed to India, bringing back Tea from the East. It has many original features including Delabole slate floors and is a beautiful spacious home from home offering accommodation in 4 bedrooms over 3 floors. For the last 50 years or more, Hathaway has been operated as a Guesthouse and has welcomed visitors from all over the world. Now a self catering holiday home, it offers family and friends the opportunity to come together and share the delights of this lovely property. Now famous for the television series Doc Martin and the traditional sea shanties of the Fishermans Friends, Port Isaac has been welcoming visitors for more than 100yrs, but unlike many villages in Cornwall, it retains its traditional character and remains unspoilt. It is a cluster of pretty white washed cottages huddled around a picturesque harbour, which is the heart of a thriving fishing community. Its steep hills and narrow streets are flanked by majestic cliffs towering above the Atlantic. Port Isaac has numerous cafes and restaurants specialising in local seafood, shops for all essentials, a pub and a wide selection of local arts and crafts. Fishing trips can be taken from the harbour where you can catch your own mackerel or maybe spot a basking shark, seal or a dolphin or 2. Hathaway has a lovely garden and patios on several levels to maximise the sun at all times of the day. There is a relaxing swing seat and plenty of garden furniture. There is no passing traffic to mar your view or interrupt your peace, sit in the garden and drink in the beauty and tranquillity, or watch the fishing boats going about their daily work. The South West Coastal Footpath runs past the bottom of the garden. There is also a large grassed back garden where there is plenty of room for playing or relaxing. Private parking for 3 cars is available in car park, 50 mts from house.

What a lovely house Hathaway is, and the location is beautiful. It has stunning views over Port Isaac and the coastal path is at the end of the front garden - the walk to Port Quin, although only about 2 and a half miles away, is challenging!

The house itself was beautifully clean and very comfortable, and was equipped with everything we needed and a whole lot more! The homemade cake waiting for us when we arrived was delicious too.

Negotiating the narrow streets of Port Isaac wasn't as bad as I'd anticipated, although I would imagine in high summer it could be tricky. There are some fabulous beaches within half an hour's drive. We loved Watergate Bay and Daymer Bay, which are 2 of the numerous dog friendly beaches in the area.

The Golden Lion pub at the harbour allows dogs in the bar area. We didn't eat there, but the food looked good. We did eat at the Port Gaverne Hotel, which is a fairly easy short walk along the coast. The food here was lovely, and they too allow dogs in.

We would highly recommend a stay at Hathaway, and really didn't want to leave! We will be visiting again very soon, all being well.

Activity and Interests


Watersports at Port Gaverne beach 10mins walk. Port Isaac beach 2 mins walk. Surfing at Polzeath 15mins drive. Sailing, Windsurfing at Rock 20mins drive.

Beautiful sandy beaches at Daymer Bay, Polzeath and Trebarwith Strand, 15 - 25mins drive. Padstow by ferry from Rock.

Surfing lessons can be arranged for you at Polzeath and courses on ocean kayaking are available locally


Newquay airport is a 30 mins drive and Exeter airport approx 1 hour, car hire is available from both. Bodmin Parkway railway station is a 30 min drive. There is a reasonably good local bus service to Wadebridge (10 miles away) and to local villages up and down the coast.


The market town of Wadebridge is 10 miles away and has many independant shops along with a large supermarket. Wadebridge is also the central point of the Camel Trail, where bikes can be hired for the wonderful cycle rides along the Camel estuary and up river towards Bodmin. The Eden Project is 40 mins drive away and The Lost Gardens of Heligan a little further. King Arthur's Tintagel is 20 mins and picturesque Boscastle too.

There is a well stocked Co-Op in Port Isaac and on the harbour side are wonderful shellfish and fresh fish shops. There's a bakers, splendid cafes and restaurants, a beautiful Pottery, pretty gift shops and a wide selection of arts and crafts.

Changeover Day:
Arrivals and departures day is Saturday except for Christmas and New Year when it may be flexible. Arrivals should be after 3pm and departures by 10am.
Short breaks may be possible out of season and price reductions possible for under occupancy.

  • Notes on accommodation: Hathaway is approached by a narrow road from the harbour called Roscarrock Hill, made famous by "the Surgery" in the television show Doc Martin. There is private parking for 3 cars in our car park at the top of the hill. Our garden path then leads to the house (about 50 metres). Hathaway is in a very peaceful setting, yet just a couple of minutes walk to the harbour, shops, restaurants and all that Port Isaac has to offer. The beach at Port Isaac is ideal for children who can spend hours crabbing and fishing in the rockpools left behind when the tide is out. The South West coastal footpath, all 630 miles of it runs past the bottom of the garden and there are many beautiful inland walks too Outside: There is a lovely front garden with a sloped lawn and shrubs and patios on several levels. There is a relaxing swing seat and plenty of tables and chairs for outdoor dining. There is also a large grassed back garden with plenty of room for playing or relaxing. However, please note that there are steps and edges in both front and back gardens and therefore small children will require supervision. Utility Room: Washing machine, tumble drier, dishwasher, freezer, iron and ironing board Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed-linen is included but please bring your own towels.
