wonderful house in a lovely village.
this house far exceeded expectations and we thoroughly recommend it. Puivert is a pretty village and there are places to eat, shop and swim within walking distance of the house. the house is spacious clean and very well located.
Really great place to stay.
Excellent bedrooms, great living space, kitchen ideal. Close to lake which was great for swimming and relaxing beside. As good as seaside beach without the crowds or the hassle.
Nice house, pity about the garden!!
The house is typically French and what we expected in a small village.
Overall the house was well furnished and the kitchen well stocked with glasses etc. and all the kitchen appliances requred for a holiday home.
The town itself was for my part too small and perhaps we should have realised that, the two restaurants in the village were fine.
Unless you got to the one village shop early you had little chance of buying any bread.
Although there was a very friendly bread van which tooted it's horn to sound its arrival in the square.
The lake which is 5minutes from the house is nice and the Friday night market was worth a visit.
However, the terrible disappoint was the garden.
Firstly it looked nothing like the pictures on the web site and secondly if was very over grown.
All the Peebles stone which were supposed to cover the plastic ground cover were very sparse and this allowed the multitude of cats to dig at the matting constantly.
The other major factor about the garden is that there is absolutely no privacy what so ever from the neighbors garden.
So when you were either eating or sunbathing the neighbour were able to see all and visa versa.
I understand that the house offers a tradition style of French life in a small village but the complete lack of privacy was unacceptable, for a holiday rental.
The built in barbecue in the garden was full of old garden cuttings and was used by the many the cats as a litter tray at times, rendering it unusable.
As I said the house itself was for the most part clean, however there was a lot of cobwebs and dust around especially on the wooden floors.
Finally I would have contacted the named person in the village who was responsible for the care of the house but we were not give any contact name to use when we were there, other than the owner who lives in the UK.
So overall a disappointing experience and I would not feel I could recommend this house, mostly based on the garden, situation.
My second time staying here - and will hope to come again :) The house is so luxurious, peaceful and quiet in the heart of the lovely medieval village surrounded by beautiful Cathar countryside - whatever you want to do indoors or out its a wonderful base to venture forth - walking, cycling, (motor or not) climbing, skiing, white-water rafting, etc, etc
Sophisticated, quality accommodation.
Situated in the centre of this quiet village, the house has the wow factor that really enhances your holiday time in France. We had just a few days here as part of a travelling holiday and it was a restful and welcoming place to break our journey. The house is beautifully equipped, spacious and tastefully decorated - a good base for exploring this Cathar influenced region. The village itself is dominated by the remains of a Cathar castle and carries a fascinating heritage, well documented on information boards - well worth a visit. The friendly village shop is just around the corner and there are several places to eat in the village. We were more than pleased with our stay here and highly recommend it to other travellers.
Large, comfortable and clean house
The kitchen was large and well equipped, plenty of cutlery, crockery and utensils. The bedrooms were clean and comfy and all being en-suite was a great help with the kids.
The village was quiet and friendly and the swimming lake a huge bonus. The daily bread van was a help and the bread was superb. Local brewery and beer fantastic as was the night market with live music.
Plenty to do in the area around (with a car), cathar castles village markets and wine tasting, would recommend it to anyone.
From the Owner
“We love the whole area just north of the Pyrenees and have stayed in various places over the years. The region around Puivert is so full of interest, activity and history (medieval and Cathar) that we decided to look for a second home here. When we viewed our house in Puivert, with its hand-built panelled hallway and staircase and light spacious rooms, we knew instantly that 'this was it'! Since buying it, we have not stopped exploring the region and have never been short of something to do, even if this is just sitting by the lake and reading.”
Activity and Interests
From the UK: Gatwick - Toulouse; Stansted - Carcassonne. Toulouse airport is a 90 min drive; Carcassonne is a 60 min drive. Both airports have car hire facilities.
Calais is about 11 to 14 hours' drive depending greatly on stopping times.
Nearby Chalabre is 10 min by car and has a variety of small shops, including a butchers, restaurants, bank (cashpoint), doctors, dentist and chemist. Quillan is about 15 min and is a pleasant bustling town with markets and bars. Must see Carcassonne, with its medieval city, is an hour's drive. Rennes-les-Bains and Rennes-le-Chateau, Montsegur and a wealth of Cathar history are all within an hour's drive.
The whole area is peaceful and tranquil, set within the beautiful foot-hills of the Pyrenees, yet there is plenty to do for all ages. Within Puivert there are a couple of small restaurants, a Salon-du-thé, a village shop (30 sec walk) and a newly opened micro-brewery, Brasserie du Quercorb, which makes great beer for sale to the public.
By the lake is the buvette, along with a safe play area for young children, ball court and boule area. The lake has a beach, a roped off area to provide safe bathing for all ages and during peak season a lifeguard is present. The lake is a focal point for all ages to meet chat, relax, swim, eat and drink and for the teenagers to show off their diving skills from the pontoon.
During peak season, on Wednesday evenings, there is a weekly market held by the lake. Amongst the craft stalls are takeaway food vendors selling everything from Asian cuisine to pizza, paella, fish and chips or Escargots. Once you have bought your supper you can buy some local wine and sit at one of the rows of trestle tables and soak up the music and atmosphere.
There are beautiful walks from the village or a short drive away. Within an hour's drive you can be walking in the beautiful Pyrenees. For the more adventurous there is a glider airfield close by. In nearby Quillan (river Aude), or Lac du Montbel, there is plenty of opportunity for water sports- kayaking, rafting etc. Perhaps a spot of wild swimming at a number of stunning and/or secluded locations in the region. During the summer there is horse-riding in the village.
At nearby Rennes-Les-Bains or Ax-les-Thermes there are thermal springs and baths for relaxation and pampering.
