Paignton:

Paignton is traditionally known as a family holiday resort. Why? Simply because of its beaches and friendly atmosphere. Like all of Torbay, Paignton wasfrequented by Victorians and some of the architecture still remains. Parts of Paignton can be found in the Domesday book and has been a small fishing port in years gone by. The sea once lapped at where the railway crossing now is, until reclaimed.

Marldon, a mile behind Paignton beyond the hills is a very old village and stills hold that community atmosphere, with their own country fayre, pubs and village shops. It is from this area that Paignton spread out and down to the bay area. Winner Street being one of the first streets to develop as a trading area behind Palace Avenue and Paignton Church. Many visitors never reach this area, but is well worth walking around. There are small shops, restaurants and Palace Avenue Theatre.

Great Paignton Beaches, Panoramic Views:

Paignton beaches are without doubt the best in the bay. All the pre-requisites are there: Gently sloping, very sandy, protected from prevailing winds, supported by a good infrastructure of restaurants, bars, ice cream kiosks, beach shops and marine activities.

The beaches stretch for miles and we would recommend (for the energetic) taking a days stroll from the far end of Preston to Elberry Cove and back. This will take you through Paignton Sands, Fairy Cove, Goodrington (North and South) Sands, Three Beaches, Broadsands and over the headland to Elberry cove. Fabulous views, watering holes on the way at Goodrington and Broadsands, sea shell and glass collection and fresh air!

Coastal Path.

Stretching from the South side of Brixham to Maidencombe, the coast path around the Bay offers excellent and varied walking, with circular walks or point-to-point, with spectacular sea views and an exotic range of flora and fauna.

Brixham ~ Famous for its Napoleonic connections:

Brixham is primarily a fishing port within Torbay and has a long and rich history. In the lee of Berry Head, famous for its Napoleonic connections, its lighthouse and magnificent limestone cliffs, Brixham remains a popular resort with a rich maritime history and plenty of activities for the young and old alike.

A Royal Estate:

Berry Head was a promontory fortress and hospital constructed in the Napoleonic period, but situated on much earlier settlers remains. These earthworks were probably of from the Early Iron Age. The Berry Head earthworks, pottery, and coins suggest a late Celtic trading settlement, persisting into Roman times.

Palaeolithic man, may also have resided in Brixham, with evidence of occupation in the "Windmill Cave". Brixham was originally a royal estate in Saxon times, pre-conquest (1066) and stretched as far as Kingswear and Galmpton. (It is thought that the name "Brixham" probably came from Brioc's village . Brioc was an old English personal name and ham is an ancient term for village.

Brixham Harbour a famous fishing port:

Brixham is more famous as a fishing port, still active and producing a good catches daily. Originally competing with Torquay and Paignton, it eventually dominated and remained the only active port. In the 1800's as many as 250 vessels fished out of Brixham, from large trawlers to inshore boats, employing over 1,500 people.

The fishing industry all but collapsed at the end of the second world war. The old harbour originally nestled in central lower part of the town, with natural protection, has been replaced and protected by the new harbour and eventual breakwater.

Review by Wizmedo from Portsmouth: "We stayed for week in August with my two children (age 5 and 9).The lovely warm pool was a big hit........as was the location so close to everything! (shops, pubs, green, beach, supermarket) Yet still so peaceful. When we reported a minor issue to the management company they resolved it the same day! Wonderful service. Lovely, comfortable accommodation. Thank you."

The apartment was great, very clean and had everything we needed. Great location, central but quiet! The kids loved the pool and went in twice a day. The flat was great and we had a lovely relaxing time.
