House in Ambrières-les-Vallées, Mayenne, France The House Overlooks The River Varenne With 3 Minute Walk To The Centre Of The Village
Ambriere-les-Vallees is a beautiful village of historic interest set within the boundaries of the Normandie National Parc. The house sits on a small road high up overlooking the river and village centre. There is a secret extensive garden at the back of the house which is lawned, with fruit trees and shrubs and the perfect place to chill out and read a book. The village sits along the banks of the River Varenne with houses built into the rocks either side of the river and a beautiful weir on the bridge crossing. There are many walks and cycles ways nearby. The village has all facilities, bars, restaurants, butchers, bakers, supermarket, newsagents, post office, banks and there is a weekly Saturday market in the village square. A few minutes ride from the village is an amazing outdoor sports park, where there is kayaking on the river, a swimming pool with shutes, etc., tennis courts, equestrian facilities and many other outdoor pursuits, there is also a camping site and eating places. Just over an hour to the north are the Northern Beaches and the wonder that is Mont St Michel, the beaches are amazing and well worth a visit. A 15 minute drive south takes you to the town of Mayenne with its medieval fortresses. Domfronts, just 15 minutes north, is a Medieval town built into rock formations with a beautiful original fortress village with restaurants and shops and amazing views over open countryside for miles. The house is a 3 storey town house, end of terrace with access to a large private garden at the side. The ground floor has a large newly fitted kitchen/dining area, the 1st floor is a spacious sitting room with large luxury sofa bed with memory foam topping, there is also a shower room/toilet on this floor. On the 2nd floor there is a large family bedroom with 1 double bed and 1 single bed and an en-suite toilet/wash basin. The house is fully central heated and has lovely views from the front aspect of the village and river.

My wife and I live in England with our ever increasing family, including 8 grandchildren. My wife is retired and I work part time but we spend as much time in France as work allows. We love our home in the Mayenne, it is a taste of the real France, quite roads, wonderful local markets and a variety of restaurants.

Lovely house in an attractive location
The two of us stayed here the second week in September and enjoyed our stay very much. The house is just as described: characterful and in a very pleasant setting, on a hill off the road in a sort of crescent of old town houses overlooking the beautiful river Varenne and the village of Ambrières-les-Valleés, rising steeply up on the opposite bank. You walk into a large, light and well-equipped kitchen-diner. Stairs wind up to a very light, pleasant and comfortable lounge whose window looks out across the river to the chateau in the village opposite. In this room there is a sofa-bed and TV. On the same floor is the shower room and WC. The shower has two heads and the resultant splash is amazing! Another flight of stairs takes you up to the bedroom which is spacious light and airy. We loved our stay here, both in the house and the surrounding area. We particularly enjoyed taking advantage of the Menus du Jour at local restaurants recommended by the owners – very good value! We enjoyed trips to castles at nearby Lassay-les-Chateaux, and Fougères, as well as visits to charming small towns and villages in the vicinity. A fun event was coming across a Fête-du-Battage and Blé Noir in a neighbouring village– a festival combining the celebration of old-time threshing techniques with the buckwheat harvest. Buckwheat is used to make those delicious Galettes so widespread in Brittany and Normandy. The local cider was a big attraction too. We’d definitely want to return.
Charming base, great location!
My wife and I stayed here for a week as a base for visiting the north of Mayenne. The owner's description of the house could not be faulted. It is an end terrace, and looks narrow as you arrive, but once inside it is bright and airy. The kitchen is well equipped and modern, the living room comfy, and the bedroom beautifully finished. The only drawback I could see is that if the living room is used as a bedroom, you have to walk through it to get to the upstairs room. Not a big problem, but something to bear in mind
The village itself sits on the river in a great setting. There are a variety of cafés and bars, and a great assortment of restaurants to choose from. There are plenty of cycling routes, walking paths and lakes in the area.
All in all, a nice house in a great location.

“The house is set in a village that we drive through on a regular basis to our house in North Mayenne. We have always stopped off and had a coffee as it is a half way marker from the port of Caen, just 1.1/2 hours. We love the village for its scenery, the River Varenne runs through the centre and it has all that a village needs, shops, restaurants, bars, banks, post office and even a weekly Saturday market - perfect! This is a 3 storey townhouse within the village but with the advantage of a secret garden and amazing views of the river from the windows.”
Activity and Interests
The famous French Northern Beaches are about 1 hour drive to the north.
Nobody should visit the north of France and not have a day at
St Malo. This is the most amazing place, with glorious sandy beaches stretching for miles but the fortress at the peak of the town must be seen to be believed. You enter through the fortress gates to be met by endless lanes all housing the most amazing little shops, you will see boutiques that you would expect to see in Paris, all the tops designer names, intertwined with amazing food shops, stand and salivate at the chocolatiers windows (it is amazing what they can do with chocolate! )
All around the edge of the fortress are the eating places to suit all tastes and budgets. Stand at the top of the fortress and enjoy the views of the sea and beaches along the coast. This is a day out you will never forget!
Mont St Michel is another must see place just up the coast from St Malo.
The house is 1.1/2 hours from the ports of Caen and also St Malo, with regular ferries from Portsmouth.
The nearest airport is Rennes and this is about 60 minutes to the house. Car hire is available from the airport.
Channel crossing from Dover to Calais is approximately 5.1/2 hours away.
Town of Mayenne is less than 15 minute drive.
City of Alencon is 50 minute drive.
Premier City of the Mayenne is Laval which is about 45 minute drive.
Medieval Town of Domfronts is 12 minutes drive.
The beautiful town of Mayenne is less than 15 minutes from the house. There the glorious Mayenne River runs through the centre of this medieval town, where you can walk or cycle along the banks or take a cruise boat tour along the river. In the centre is there is a wonderful old castle overlooking the river with parkland and places to sit and watch the world go by! The shops are situated along small historic cobbled streets, everything from top boutiques, chocolatiers, boulangeries, patissiers, fromageries, many brasseries and bistros for delicious lunches and of course, the ever present French pavement cafe' to enjoy a drink and watch the locals going about their day.
On the outskirts of the town are the modern superstores that are definitely worth a visit, these are situated on the road to Laval, just follow the signs.
The village of Ambrieres-les-Vallees has everything you could wish for in a french village. There are several butcher and deli's, several bakers, a supermarket, a bank, post office, newsagents, restaurants, bars and also a pizza bar. There are clothes shops, 2 pharmacies and on a Saturday morning there is a typical french market in the square. We like to stroll through the village in the early evening and see the local people popping into the butchers and bakers for their evening bread/pastries and supplies from the butchers, all of whom are open to quite late in the evening. One thing is guaranteed, you will never go hungry in Ambrieres.
There is a lovely leisure complex a few minutes drive away, located on the Mayenne river, with all the usual river sports, a lovely swimming pool with shutes and various areas for picnics, ball games and eating places and equestrian centre. Somewhere to relax and enjoy your holiday.
In a nearby town there is another leisure park with canoeing, golf, jogging tracks, fishing and paintballing, all set in lovely countryside.
The house looks out over the River Varenne that runs through the village, where you are able to fish or just walk along the banks of the river.
There is a Velo Rail (old trailway train tracks) a couple of minutes from the house suitable for walking or cycling and takes you through beautiful countryside to St Loup-du-Gast, a delightful little village

Please contact owner in first instance. Deposit of £50 per week booked, due within a week of confirmation of booking. The remainder due 6 weeks before commencement of holiday together with a £100 security bond, returnable within a week of departure after inspection of house.
Saturday changeover day.
Cleaning: Please leave the house as you find it, which includes stripping beds and removing rubbish from property. Washing down kitchen surfaces and washing up and clearing out the fridge, hoovering and washing floors. Cleaning the BBQ. However, we do provide a "Get up and Go" service if you wish to leave early, we are quite happy that you leave everything including that mornings washing up, for a small charge of Euros 25.00 we will do the cleaning for you.
Accidents happen, and breakages will happen but please tell us in order to arrange a replacement for the next guests.
A £50.00 per week deposit is payable upon confirmation of booking with final balance together with security deposit of £100.00 is due 6 weeks prior to arrival.

- Notes on accommodation: The house sits on three floors, there is a newly fitted kitchen/dining room on ground floor with front aspect windows and front door. The sitting room is on the 1st floor with new luxury 'L' shaped sofa bed, satellite TV and collection of DVDs, books and games. There is also a shower room with double shower, toilet and washbasin on this floor. On the 2nd floor there is a large bedroom with a double and single bed (ideal family room) and en-suite toilet and washbasin. There is also a flat screen TV/DVD player with French channels in this bedroom. The house has been newly decorated and each room has lovely views over the river and park. Outside: There is a private garden at the back laid to lawn with fruit trees and shrubs and many flowering plants. There are table and chairs for outside eating together with a BBQ. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen is provided, sheets, towels and tea towels and the property will be cleaned after each letting and linen will be available for a weekly change for longer stays.
