La Maison & La Chaumiere: Private Heated Pool, Spa, Sauna & Pizza Oven

Overview

Property

Updated: 05-Dec-2016
Farmhouse in Villetoureix, Riberac, Dordogne, Aquitaine, France - Peaceful Location In The Dordogne Countryside, 3 miles from town

La Maison & La Chaumière are perfect for a relaxing holiday with family or friends. The property consists of one large house, La Maison, sleeping up to 11 people, and one smaller house, La Chaumière, sleeping up to 4 people. Both houses are in the same hamlet, so they are close to each other, either side of a quiet country lane. The smaller house has its own garden and terrace and is ideal for grandparents who would appreciate their own space and privacy, or perhaps a young couple with baby. Both houses have been renovated to provide all modern comforts, whilst still retaining their original characters. Both houses have fully equipped kitchens (Bosch washing machines, Bosch dishwashers, Bosch self cleaning multi function ovens, fridges, freezers, Panasonic microwaves etc) and comfortable lounges with LCD televisions with UK TV, wi-fi etc as well as original fireplaces, oak beams, exposed stonework etc. All bedrooms have large comfortable beds for that all-important good night's sleep; a total of 3 king size double beds, 6 single beds, 2 double sofa-beds and 2 cots. All bedlinen (and towels) included in the price. The larger house is equipped to cater for a total of 15 people, and benefits from two large outdoor tables and seating for 15, as well as a large barbecue & worksurfaces for meals together outside. The terrace is shaded at lunchtime and lit for the evening, and enjoys full view of the swimming pool, gardens, swings for the children and views of the valley. The large heated private pool measures 12 x 6m (40 x 20 ft) (50% more than the usual 10x5m) & has two expansive terraces, set amongst pretty gardens, just perfect for relaxing and for your exclusive use. The solar heating and insulated cover help to maintain the water temperature so it is always ideal for both swimming or relaxing. The coloured underwater lighting makes an attractive backdrop once the sun goes down, as well as making a night-time swim essential! Towels are provided. The pool is enclosed with security fences & gates, which conform to French regulations, to prevent young children from entering the pool area without an adult. You can relax in the luxurious spa, and enjoy the view over the valley, ideal after a day's sight-seeing or perhaps a strenuous day lazing by the pool! There is also a wood-fired sauna, together with massage room, where you can either book a soothing massage by a professional or try it yourselves. The more energetic may prefer the games field, with table tennis, badminton, volleyball and football, plus a large nature area which is excellent for butterflies. The surrounding area is ideal for walking and cycling with many signposted paths, an ideal way to see the countryside. Tennis and horse-riding are available in the village, 2 minutes away; you can go fishing and canoeing on the River Dronne, 5 minutes away. The property is conveniently situated close to Riberac town, 3 miles away, for all amenities: shops, supermarkets, restaurants, cafés, pharmacies, doctors, weekly market etc. Daily bread supplies are available from the village 1.5 miles away, where there is also a bar and restaurant. La Maison and La Chaumière are within easy reach of many tourist attractions: Brantome, “the Venice of the Dordogne”, the monolithic church at Aubeterre, the caves at Villars, Puyguilhem chateau, the lake and nature area at La Jemaye, canoeing on the River Dronne etc. There are plenty of visits for children and adults alike within easy reach. This property is ideally located for exploring the Dordogne and Charente areas with plenty to visit every day of your holiday. It is perfect for a quiet relaxing holiday in the countryside.

Super holiday home for family get-togethers:

Our family had a wonderful stay here. The property was great for our group of 12 people, including a baby, small children and grandparents. The small house worked well for the grandparents, as they could get up and go to bed when they wanted, and had somewhere quiet to retire to for a nap or just some peace and quiet, but could still join us for meals in the big house. The beds were very comfortable. All facilities were well maintained with the dishwasher an essential for a stay without any hassle. The kitchen was very well equipped, so we never lacked any equipment. The big freezer was a great help, even though the shops are only 5 minutes away. We especially liked the terrace, well shaded from the sun during the day, and well lit in the evening for family meals, with a view of the pool lit underwater. (The kids loved the "disco" lights, but we adults preferred the more subtle lights.) Obviously the pool was a success with the whole family, and the pool remains clean thanks to a robot that fascinated us all. Security fences were very appreciated as there were young children, so we could relax without worrying that children could fall into the water. The spa was great, very relaxing, with a view of the garden and the valley, but still private and protected from the sun. The amount of visits in the region surprised us. We did not expect much, but when we were forced to abandon the pool after too much sun, we discovered many visits easily within an hour by car. Visit number one for me was the monolithic church at Aubeterre, but the children preferred canoeing and horse riding. The market at Ribérac was wonderful, with so many people and stalls. There are many walks very close by, especially after too many large lunches! The best restaurant was at Siorac, Le Lavoir, a picturesque village very close by, but there was plenty of choice at the supermarkets and market to cook at home. The owners were nice and friendly and very good at dealing with the bees nest which appeared during our stay. Without hesitation we would recommend this property and hope to return soon.

Super summer holiday for all the family !

We - a family of 12 people - loved the holiday we spent at La Maison/La Chaumière. Everyone, from the great grandmother (94 years old) to the twins (5 months), found an ideal place for both activity and relaxation. The house is well equipped, clean and comfortable. All equipment: dishwasher, freezer, washing machine, make the daily life of a large family much easier. We enjoyed dining on the terrace which is shaded at lunch time when the sun is hot, and refreshing in the evening. The barbecue was also much appreciated. The beds are good and extra equipment for babies was provided by the owners. As most of us had busy lives before reaching Villetoureix, we spent a lot of time relaxing and swimming, so the pool and spa were most welcome. Among us, there was a seven year old girl and we were reassured by the security fence that limited access to the pool. In the evening we played Mölkky (Finnish bowling) on the lawn near the pool. The TV room was perfectly suited to watching DVDs. The kitchen was also a nice place to get together with family and play board games. John and Lesley were very friendly and were helpful for the small problems we encountered. They also gave us good tips for shopping in the region. Riberac market is a marvel. As we enjoy good food, it was a pleasure to buy fresh fruit and vegetables from local farmers. We also enjoyed boating on the river, and a few walks in the neighborhood. We enjoyed visiting Romanesque churches, but did not do much visiting. Regarding the restaurants, we went to Le Lavoir where we received a warm welcome and experienced simple and good cuisine. La Maison & La Chaumière is a place we would recommend to our family and our friends. We would also go back without hesitation.

Magnificent holiday home

We really appreciated this holiday home where we spent a week holidaying with family and friends. It is spacious, very well maintained and very well equipped. The big pool is very pleasant. We made good use of the spa (guaranteed relaxation) whilst the children played table tennis or were in the pool. The owners John and Lesley look after their guests very well. The children and adults all enjoyed the pizza evening where the children had to prepare and cook their own pizza in the oven built by John. Everyone had a good time. We also went visiting in the area - our favourite visit was the church built into the rock at Aubeterre, a very unusual building not to be missed. There are also the villages of St Jean de Cole and Brantome which are a must. At Brantome we hired canoes with the children - a pleasurable experience. I recommend this holiday home to people in search of a relaxing time with family and / or friends. (Evelyne N. France)

Fantastic holiday here Everyone enjoyed it - something for everyone - the kids loved the games field - the adults loved the spa - and both loved the pool. Booking was easy - all questions answered promptly - proper contract exchanged. The gardens were well looked after - the pool was spotless - loungers - lovely terrace with huge tables and great lighting. Kitchen had everything and lifesaver of a dishwasher. Beds were comfortable - bedrooms were roomy and very clean. Towels came in handy so we didn't need to lug them from the UK, which meant more room for wine on the trip home! Would love to go again.

A place to visit again

I recently stayed in this gite with my daughters, son-in-laws and 3 grandsons, together with my husband. We were amazed at the first class facilities afforded to us. No expense spared. Tasteful furniture and accessories. Clean and tidy house. Great swimming pool for us to enjoy at any time of the day. Plenty of good walks, canoeing and excellent restaurants in nearby Riberac, together with a typical French market. John & Lesley, our hosts, were there if we needed them for advice but not intrusive at all. We were so impressed standards that our son also rented the following year together with his inlaws – a party of 14. He too was more than impressed. A place to visit again.

About the Owner

As we live in the hamlet, we are available to help you enjoy your holiday, so can help with advice on places to visit, restaurants, shopping, doctors etc, translation if required and of course emergencies. We are also around for pool and spa maintenance, building the fires for the sauna and pizza oven, gardening etc. For several years we "commuted" from the UK for DIY/renovation holidays (!) until we decided we preferred life in France and so moved permanently. We're sure you'll love it as much as we do..

We first spent our holiday at La Maison a few years ago and as we had good memories of that holiday, we decided to go back again. We were not disappointed. As there wasn't enough time to do all we had planned this year, we shall be going back to finish what we started! (CD, Kent, England)

Fantastic 2 weeks in Aug spent at La Maison and La Chaumiere. Family group of 12 including 4 kids between 8 &12. Beautiful typically French properties, in a quiet, beautiful location with wonderful views over a valley. The swimming pool is fantastic, clean and well maintained. We loved the outdoor eating area, family meals around the table, under the fairy lights with a glass of wine made the holiday for us. We had two in our party 70+ who were very much at home in their own « residence ». A great location for a lovely, relaxing holiday. (Scott, Manchester UK)

The houses are well-equipped, clean and comfortable. Excellent facilities for dealing with our large family. It is a place we would recommend to friends and family. We would also go back without hesitation. (Martine, Yvelines, France)

Our stay in the Dordogne

  • 4 of 5

We spent a brilliant sunny week at La Maison & La Chaumiere in July 2016. We were a family of eleven - 6 adults, 4 children and 1 eight month old. We had no problem finding the properties and they were as described - superb, clean and generally well-maintained. The heated swimming pool and table tennis were a great favourite, especially with the children, and the adults also enjoyed the opportunity to use the spa and sauna. The pizza evening was a great hit with us all too and the owners went to a lot of trouble to ensure that they catered for our every need. The surrounding area is beautiful with plenty of sunflower fields, meadows and wonderful old buildings. We had several days out, our favourite places to visit being Aubeterre and Perigueux not forgettting the market in Riberac which we visited on our last day. We also spent an energetic morning canoeing and kayaking at Riberac. All in all, the holiday was a great success and can be recommended - such a shame it didn't last a little longer .......

Spacious and clean property - exactly as described

  • 5 of 5

John and Leslie were informative and welcoming. The property is as described, and was perfect for a relaxing week away. The pool and outside eating area were great for socialising. Sauna and hot-tub were v. impressive, although we only used the hot-tub once since it was so hot outside!

The house is in a quiet area but there's lots to do near-by - we did a day trip to Brentome, for example.

Thank you!

Great for Large Groups

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely holiday at this large property situated down a quiet lane yet only 10 mins drive from Riberac for the supermarket restaurants and busy Friday market. La Maison has a well equipped kitchen, good sized bathrooms (with new towels) and bedrooms. La Chaumiere, just across the lane, is completely self contained with a newly fitted bathroom and plenty of space. The pool is very big, so lots of room for everybody. The table tennis was a hit with all and there is lots of grass for boules, badminton etc. We were there for the Perseid meteor shower so several evenings were spent star gazing - we didn't have to look very hard to see lots of shooting stars. John and Lesley are very helpful and quick to resolve any issues that arise. They provide the option to have a pizza evening which we thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend - the pizzas tasted amazing.

Canoeing from Riberac (no weirs) or from further upstream where there are more weirs to get over is entertaining! The village of Bordeilles and town of Brantome are beautiful and worth a visit. We also visited Bergerac which has lovely old town. Our favourite restaurants were Chez Fred in Allemans which had great seafood, Le Chabrot and A' Fleur d'eau in Riberac.

Fantastic property with brilliant facilities

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from an amazing holiday here and already miss the lovely heated pool and great facilities. We were 2 families , 10 of us altogether although there would have been ample room for more. Great to have a large heated pool in lovely surroundings with a sun lounger complete with cushions for all. Pizza oven was also a highlight as was the jacuzzi and massages. We were lucky with gloriously hot weather for most of the time and made use of the badminton and table tennis. Good quality bedding, kitchen equipment , 3 fridges altogether etc. Only downside we can think of is you do need to allow time to clean place particularly well as end of stay cleaning is not included in price although this is made clear in the initial contract. All in all a fantastic place which we would highly recommend and would love to return to.

Best holiday so far!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this holiday home, « La Maison et La Chaumière » for 2 weeks, sharing with another family with whom we have been on holiday the last 8 years. And we all agreed that this property was the best of the lot. The interior of the houses is very well presented and equipped. We wanted for nothing: large shaded outdoor terrace, big barbecue, and superb swimming pool. And in the evening, the terrace is romantically lit as well as coloured lights in the pool .... so, we were often impatient for it to get dark! Truly memorable. And the spa (or hot-tub or jacuzzi, or whatever you want to call it) was the "piece de resistance"! We tried at all times of the day. The problem is that a spa is now mandatory on the list for the holidays in the future, so that our choices will be more limited. But to have a touch of luxury was very special we felt like millionaires for the fortnight. We also appreciated the quality of the beds. It is always our main complaint on "gite / villa" type holidays that the beds are too small or poor quality sinking mattresses. Not this time! A real double 160cm, with quality mattress. Given that we spend around a third of the day in bed (or more!) this is normally the thing we complain most about after our holiday. But this property did well, with beds that are more comfortable and larger than ours at home. We adults also enjoyed the gardens with lots of flowers, trees and shrubs, all with great summer colors. We tried a few restaurants in the area. Thank you Lesley for helping with recommendations and reservations. All were good and excellent. The Friday morning market was a success for all. Surprisingly large for a town of modest size. Our only problem was at the end of our stay, telling the children that we had to go home. We managed to stop the tears by agreeing an evening swim after dark, with colored lights in the pool. We have always looked for a different property each year when choosing our next holiday. But we'll probably go back to « La Maison et La Chaumière », because I think it will be hard to beat. Thank you for an unforgettable stay: our best until now!

From the Owner

We chose the property because of its peaceful location in the countryside, yet conveniently close to town for shopping etc. Ribérac is a sleepy rural town for most of the week, so avoiding the crowds, yet comes alive on Friday morning for the market, which is the biggest in the Dordogne. There are plenty of tourist attractions to visit in the area, many within an hour's drive and open outside of July and August, when you can drag yourselves away from the pool! And of course you can't forget the views!

Notes:

  • This property is ideal for a large family holiday. The smaller house, La Chaumière, is perfect for grandparents who would like to share the family holiday, whilst still enjoying some peace and quiet. You can still eat together on the terrace or in the kitchen of La Maison, but if the grandparents want a cup of tea or afternoon nap, they can retire to their own place. Also suitable if there is one couple with babies or young children who would appreciate their own place. In La Chaumière, there is a double sofabed and single bed in the lounge, which allows the 3rd & 4th people in this house to have separate beds if required. Large lounge so no need to fold up the sofabed everyday. In La Maison, the mezzanine room, above the lounge, is perfectly private once there is no-one in the lounge below and the door to the kitchen is closed. There is no passageway through this room. It can also be used as a second lounge. The staircase shown in the photo of the lounge leads only to this room. Outside: Enjoy family meals together on the terrace in the shade at lunchtime or beautifully lit at night, overlooking the pool, also lit up at night. Relax by the poolside or enjoy a dip in the heated pool which is 12x6m (40ft by 20ft) (almost 50% larger than other pools of 10x5m) and benefits from 2 terraces, complete with loungers and chairs, plus parasols to protect you from the sun. The pool is private and for your group's exclusive use. It is fully fenced and gated with childproof locks so younger children cannot go into the pool area without adult supervision. After a strenuous day sightseeing, or a day by the pool, enjoy a luxurious spa, with a gorgeous view over the valley or take advantage of the massage room or relax in the wood-fired sauna. For the more energetic, there is a large games field, with table tennis, badminton and football etc. Have a go at making your own pizza in our traditional wood fired brick oven - great fun for all the family!
