Cottage in Frogmore, Kingsbridge, South Devon, England - Very close to some of the best beaches in the country

Forget-me-not-cottage is a charming cottage set right on the side of Frogmore Creek. The long enclosed south facing cottage garden backs onto the Creek giving beautiful views of the Estuary and its abundant wildlife and rolling hillside beyond. The Summerhouse, overlooking the Creek, is a wonderful place to relax and unwind. Frogmore is situated on the East side of the Salcombe/Kingsbridge Estuary, close to the fabulous golden beaches of Salcombe and East Portlemouth and just a five-minute drive from the pretty waterside town of Kingsbridge with its many shops, pubs and restaurants. Historic Dartmouth is just a short drive in the opposite direction, along what must be one of the most spectacular coastal routes in the country. Frogmore has its own bakery, which sells freshly baked bread and croissants! It also has a post office and dining pub all just a couple of minutes walk from the cottage door.

We are a family of five with three young children. We spend virtually every holiday, half term and some weekends at our holiday cottage on the opposite side of the Salcombe Estuary from Forget Me Not Cottage. In our opinion it is one of the most beautiful areas in the country and we hope that you will like it as much as we do. We bought this cottage after we had missed out on the purchase some 9 years ago and we certainly were not going let it pass this time. We anticipate that we will also enjoy the cottage and beautiful creekside location out of season whenever the cottage is not let.

Why sian janta-lipinski chose Kingsbridge

We almost bought Forget Me Not Cottage 9 years ago but were pipped at the post by the family we just bought it from. We fell in love with it right from the first minute. The views from the south facing garden and summerhouse are really memorable looking over Frogmore Creek across to beautiful fields and rolling hills. Not only that, the direct access to the water from the garden is a huge plus factor and effectively makes the Estuary part of your back garden. Frogmore lies between Salcombe and Dartmouth and some of the best beaches in the South Hams are just a short drive away, or a good paddle/sail along the Estuary!! Salcombe and Kingsbridge, with many fashionable restaurants and pubs are also "just round the corner". When the property came up for sale we snapped it up immediately.

What makes this cottage unique

The best thing about Forget Me Not Cottage is the fact that you can happily spend a day or two just hanging out in and around the summerhouse and the Creek. Mess around in boats or watch the kids play in their kayaks while you enjoy a glass of wine or two relaxing on the deck. A special treat is to watch the tide come in with returning local fishing boats. The bird life is something to behold both with the tide in or out.

Some of the best beaches in the country, such as the fabulous golden sands of East Portlemouth are just a short drive from the cottage. For walkers, head out from the front door for long walks along the Creek or drive to Gara Rock and join the coastal path. Finally, the heated summerhouse, even in winter, is still a great place to just chill out.

A pretty 150’ garden then leads to a beach-hut style heated summerhouse with fabulous southerly views over Frogmore Creek; ideally placed for lunch, BBQ’s or even dinner by the Creekside. The summerhouse has the added bonus of a double sofa bed. Steps lead you down to a lawned area adjacent to the creek where kayaks or small boats can be kept during your stay so that you can explore the beautiful Salcombe Estuary, which effectively becomes your “back garden”

Charming cottage in beautiful location

We had a great week at Forget-me-not cottage. Highlights were: adventures in our boat on the creek, games in the summer house, and cosy evenings by the fire. The owners were very attentive and sorted any issues immediately. Thoroughly recommend this cottage to anyone wanting to explore this stunning part of the country.

Peaceful retreat

We had a very relaxing break at this delightful cottage. The cottage was clean and comfortable, we were fortunate in getting good weather so spent a good amount of time in the summerhouse at the bottom of the garden; this really is the big bonus with this property. We never tired of sitting in this real suntrap and relaxing whilst just watching the world pass by, peace and tranquility :-).

The property is well situated for exploring this beautiful part of Devon. It is on a main road which can get quite busy during the day, but any traffic noise was never intrusive; the road was very quiet in the evening and through the night. The car parking is a good test of your parallel parking, but after making a bit of a dogs breakfast of my first attempt I subsequently managed to park easily (I have a full size family saloon, so unless you have a big 4x4 truck there really shouldn't be a problem parking).

We ate at the local pub a couple of times and found them to be very welcoming and the food was good; I also enjoyed the local craft beer - if that is your thing.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay at this cottage and would love to return in the future.

Very nice place but needs a few improvements

Flowers and biscuits were a nice touch but the property fell short of what we expected from the description, especially the outside, which looked as if it had not been swept for months at the front and some of the hedges wanted trimming back. The oven handle dropped off after 3 days. There was no freezer, but in fairness to Rob he did ring me to compensate for this. The decking outside the french doors was not safe to walk on (and we were told by the cleaner to be careful on it as it was rotting) and the chairs were not fit to sit on. The main reason we chose this property was because of the Summer House which we found could have done with a good clean. There was nowhere to put our drinks because the coffee table was warped and in poor condition. Apart from these things which I feel I have to mention, the upstairs was lovely and we slept very well and enjoyed our holiday despite this. It is in a wonderful location as we have stayed in this village before.

Owner's Response: We're very sorry that our cottage didn't suit this guest. Unfortunately in the autumn, leaves can build up very quickly on the parking space especially if it's windy and the fact that it's adjacent to the road (I personally swept the whole front area just the week before when I was checking the cottage). We have two beautiful large hydrangeas in the front which are still in bloom in the early autumn so we would certainly not want to trim these until the winter. We employ professional gardeners to ensure that the cottage garden at the rear is well kept enough to look tidy but not to lose its charm and magic; in fact the gardeners had been there just a few days before the guests arrived and our cleaner said it looked beautiful and was very surprised when the guests immediately criticised the shrubs, which they felt should have been trimmed right back. The fridge has a small freezer compartment which is adequate for just a few items but not the two weeks worth of frozen goods which the guests had brought with them! Our facilities manager immediately took the frozen food back to their freezer in their house and delivered items as required. We also reimbursed the guest for all of the frozen food as a goodwill gesture. The teak deck is not rotten but has two loose boards which is being sorted. The garden chairs are all good quality teak and are nicely weathered as teak should be. The guests following (as you can see from their review) did not mention this or any of the other issues described here. We are disappointed to hear that the summer house wasn't as expected - again, we have never had a complaint before but will look into this.

Met all our expectations

Travelled to the cottage from Perth vie Edinburgh and Bristol airports. This is the 2nd time that we have had a week in the cottage. Well maintained, very clean, fully fitted out for all our needs. The summer house overlooking the creek is an outstanding facility. On a good weather day it was tempting just to stock up from the baker in the village and not go out! But "out" is brilliant. Some of the best beaches in the country are nearby. Appreciated the phone call from the owners after we left. Will be back. Gordon Rae.

Great idyllic getaway

We stayed here for 2 weeks for our honeymoon in June with our 4 year old son. We got great weather and took great advantage of all the local beaches.

The location is so tranquil, the house beautifully decorated, the summerhouse and the garden are amazing. It felt like home straight away. We will be back at some point. Thankyou

Our second year at this property still as idyllic as ever

Well equipped cottage in a perfect location for us. We love the garden, summer house and views. Sian and Rob are very easy to deal with they communicate well with their guests. With the benefit of off road parking and two bedrooms, this is a superb holiday cottage for a family. We will almost certainly be going back again next year.

Forget-me-not Cottage is extremely well placed for visiting the whole of the South Hams area, designated as ‘an area of outstanding natural beauty’, famous for its rolling hillsides, beautiful estuaries and 60 miles of fantastic and varied coastline, with many clean, safe and sandy beaches to suit all tastes. At East Portlemouth there are at least four golden sand beaches. Slightly further away is the great sweep of sand of the surfing beach of Bantham linking into Thurlestone and Bigbury and not forgetting the really popular beaches of Salcombe and Hope Cove or a sheltered cove like Hallsands. Slapton Sands is less than a 10 minute drive from the Cottage, and backed by the extraordinary freshwater lagoon or drive for another five minutes along the beautiful coastal road to the wooded sun-trap of Blackpool Sands which was recently voted the best family beach in Britain by Conde Nast Traveller Magazine.

You will be spoilt for choice with some of the best pubs and restaurants anywhere: Very close by are the Crabshell in Kingsbridge and The Millbrook Arms just up the road in Southpool. This is a favourite meeting place for visitors from all villages around the Estuary, particularly at high tide. Salcombe has the famous Winking Prawn on North Sands beach and South Milton Sands has one of our favourite places to eat, The Beach Hut. For those who like it spicy visit Maha Bharat and Cafe Asia in Kingsbridge, real top quality Indian, Chinese and Thai food.
