Creekside Cottage Adjacent to Frogmore Creek, Part Of The Salcombe Estuary

Updated: 24-Oct-2016
Cottage in Frogmore, Kingsbridge, South Devon, England - Very close to some of the best beaches in the country

Forget-me-not-cottage is a charming cottage set right on the side of Frogmore Creek. The long enclosed south facing cottage garden backs onto the Creek giving beautiful views of the Estuary and its abundant wildlife and rolling hillside beyond. The Summerhouse, overlooking the Creek, is a wonderful place to relax and unwind. Frogmore is situated on the East side of the Salcombe/Kingsbridge Estuary, close to the fabulous golden beaches of Salcombe and East Portlemouth and just a five-minute drive from the pretty waterside town of Kingsbridge with its many shops, pubs and restaurants. Historic Dartmouth is just a short drive in the opposite direction, along what must be one of the most spectacular coastal routes in the country. Frogmore has its own bakery, which sells freshly baked bread and croissants! It also has a post office and dining pub all just a couple of minutes walk from the cottage door.

About the Owner

We are a family of five with three young children. We spend virtually every holiday, half term and some weekends at our holiday cottage on the opposite side of the Salcombe Estuary from Forget Me Not Cottage. In our opinion it is one of the most beautiful areas in the country and we hope that you will like it as much as we do. We bought this cottage after we had missed out on the purchase some 9 years ago and we certainly were not going let it pass this time. We anticipate that we will also enjoy the cottage and beautiful creekside location out of season whenever the cottage is not let.

Fantastic for easy access to sailing and kayaking

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing week at the cottage. The house itself is lovely, with everything you might need during a week away. The really special aspect of the cottage however is the outside area: the garden is wonderful - in particular the beautiful summer house (we now want one) - and having the estuary at the bottom of this was great. We had super weather and ate most of our meals at the end of the garden, overlooking the estuary, and admiring the view. We brought our own sailing dinghy and kayaks with us - we have only just started in this hobby - and the access we had to the water meant there was no easier way to start experimenting and trying these out. We loved it!

Delightful cottage in beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

First stay in this property although we have been to the area dozens of times. We were not disappointed. Tidy, well equipped cottage with fabulous garden and location overlooking the constantly changing Frogmore Creek. Very helpful owners, Sian and Rob who care about their guests. We are planning to stay again next year.

Blissful waterside break on the creek

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have asked for a better venue for a much needed break, once you've entered the cottage and left the travelling behind, you step through and out into an Enid Blyton tale! Venturing down the grassy garden you round a gentle corner and discover the surprise of the fun-packed summer house; kitted out with games and activities, seating, and sofa bed, perfectly poised to look out over the fascinating creek, with its tidal changes and varied wildlife. A beautiful, discreet and restful place by day and by night, with easy access to the foreshore; whether to paddle and play or to set out by boat for the estuary.

The cottage itself has all that you need for a coastal break; old-fashioned character with its nooks and crannies and cosy log fire. and enough 'mod-cons' to make yourself at home and to keep you entertained on colder nights.

It's a great base to explore the South Hams, with beaches and boating, town facilities and wild country all minutes away.

The owners were helpful, informative and accommodating, and clearly have both an eye for detail and the spirit of 'romance and adventure' needed to create a timeless story-tale setting in this tranquil but well-connected 'backwater'.

In short - we loved it!

Gorgeous cottage in a perfect spot

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week at Forget-me-not cottage during the Summer. The cottage is in a perfect location, a short drive to Kingsbridge and close to all the fabulous beaches in the area.

The cottage is spotlessly clean, bright, airy but at the same time cosy and very comfortable with chic decor and sumptuous furnishings. Our favourite spot was the summer house at the end of the garden. We spent many breakfasts and evenings relaxing on the decking watching the kayakers and boats go by and the kids play in the creek. We also loved it in the rain and cooler evenings, a cosy retreat, well equipped with lots of games to while away the day.

With two boys aged 10 and 7 our week was action packed. Rob and Sian are wonderful hosts and introduced us to some great walks in the area, our favourites being the stunning cliff walk from Gara Rock to Sunny Cove and the equally beautiful walk from Soar Mill Cove to Hope Cove. We also enjoyed kayaking in the creek, body boarding on Bantham beach (we chose a spot on the river side, a bit quieter and dogs are allowed) and running into the surf at South Milton sands.

There are also some great places to eat in the area - the Crabshell in Kingsbridge, the Hope & Anchor in Hope Cove, and the winking prawn at north sands all got top marks! It was a fantastic holiday and we've already booked for next year!

Quintessential English Coastal Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We heard about this fantastic creek-side cottage on the edge of the Salcombe/Kingsbridge Estuary at the Cotswold Sailing Club, and to our surprise we were lucky enough to snap-up the last remaining school holiday week of the year!

Quite frankly there must be precious few locations as brilliant as this. Not only was the cottage beautifully presented and perfectly proportioned (for a family of four) the garden, running down to the creek with its spacious summerhouse, was something else! We parked our Pico sailing dingy on the lower lawn next to the creek so launching, retrieval and storage was child’s play – literally!

We spent many hours in the summerhouse, with its colonial ambiance, comfortable chairs and panoramic views of the creek, watching the children play in the shallows and small craft busying to and fro against the gentle tide.

The cottage is perfectly located for what can only be described as some of the most beautiful beaches in England including the exquisite Sunny Cove and the something-for-everyone Bantham Beach. Salcombe with all its nautical liveliness was great fun, so too were a number of nearby pubs including the irascible Pigs Nose at East Prawle. The historic Milton Arms in the neighbouring village of South Pool was one of those ‘great finds’ where we got to chat with Salcombe Estuary’s boat-owning locals ‘in the know’.

Dartford and all its sea-faring razzmatazz was within easy reach so too was the remarkable Greenway – Agatha Christie’s holiday home preserved by the National Trust as if she had just popped down to the boathouse. The best way to get to Greenway is via the Dittisham Ferry as Dittisham is yet another relatively undiscovered gem and its location on ‘The Dart’ will take your breath away!

In a nutshell (finally) holidaying at Forget Me Not Cottage was one of those few occasions that surpassed all expectations so if you’re looking for a quintessential English coastal holiday that remains true to the values of a by-gone age absent of quick-buck tat then this for you!

Fabulous cottage with beautiful surroundings

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time here with our 2 year old daughter. Perfectly situated for trips to the beach (some within 5 minutes drive) water sports and a bit of shopping/swimming in Kingsbridge. The cottage was the best-equipped I have stayed in, and was perfectly clean and beautifully furnished. We were so impressed with the garden and views and the peaceful calm of the creek. The pub, although we didn't visit, was 30 seconds from the front door and the bakery a few minutes. We arrived to find fresh flowers, biscuits and milk awaiting us and a full folder recommending things to do in the area.

Great communication with the owners, always quick to respond and eager to help.

I have recommended this property to several relatives and friends since our return. We would definitely stay here again.

From the Owner

We almost bought Forget Me Not Cottage 9 years ago but were pipped at the post by the family we just bought it from. We fell in love with it right from the first minute. The views from the south facing garden and summerhouse are really memorable looking over Frogmore Creek across to beautiful fields and rolling hills. Not only that, the direct access to the water from the garden is a huge plus factor and effectively makes the Estuary part of your back garden. Frogmore lies between Salcombe and Dartmouth and some of the best beaches in the South Hams are just a short drive away, or a good paddle/sail along the Estuary!! Salcombe and Kingsbridge, with many fashionable restaurants and pubs are also "just round the corner". When the property came up for sale we snapped it up immediately.

Further Details:

Forget-me-not Cottage is extremely well placed for visiting the whole of the South Hams area, designated as ‘an area of outstanding natural beauty’, famous for its rolling hillsides, beautiful estuaries and 60 miles of fantastic and varied coastline, with many clean, safe and sandy beaches to suit all tastes. At East Portlemouth there are at least four golden sand beaches. Slightly further away is the great sweep of sand of the surfing beach of Bantham linking into Thurlestone and Bigbury and not forgetting the really popular beaches of Salcombe and Hope Cove or a sheltered cove like Hallsands. Slapton Sands is less than a 10 minute drive from the Cottage, and backed by the extraordinary freshwater lagoon or drive for another five minutes along the beautiful coastal road to the wooded sun-trap of Blackpool Sands which was recently voted the best family beach in Britain by Conde Nast Traveller Magazine.

You will be spoilt for choice with some of the best pubs and restaurants anywhere: Very close by are the Crabshell in Kingsbridge and The Millbrook Arms just up the road in Southpool. This is a favourite meeting place for visitors from all villages around the Estuary, particularly at high tide. Salcombe has the famous Winking Prawn on North Sands beach and South Milton Sands has one of our favourite places to eat, The Beach Hut. For those who like it spicy visit Maha Bharat and Cafe Asia in Kingsbridge, real top quality Indian, Chinese and Thai food.

From the Owner

The best thing about Forget Me Not Cottage is the fact that you can happily spend a day or two just hanging out in and around the summerhouse and the Creek. Mess around in boats or watch the kids play in their kayaks while you enjoy a glass of wine or two relaxing on the deck. A special treat is to watch the tide come in with returning local fishing boats. The bird life is something to behold both with the tide in or out. Some of the best beaches in the country, such as the fabulous golden sands of East Portlemouth are just a short drive from the cottage. For walkers, head out from the front door for long walks along the Creek or drive to Gara Rock and join the coastal path. Finally, the heated summerhouse, even in winter, is still a great place to just chill out.
