Wildlife

Hodbarrow’s wildlife rich coastal lagoon is the largest stretch of coastal open water in north-west England. Part of the lagoon is owned by the RSPB and several pathways take you through different habitats leading to the hide. From here, you can watch Cumbria’s only breeding sandwich tern colony. The reserve also attracts little terns, warblers, great crested grebes, red breasted mergansers and wildfowl such as wigeons. The large number of birds also attracts the attention of local birds of prey, including the peregrine falcon. From the sea wall, you may also be lucky enough to spot seals and porpoises playing in Haverigg’s picturesque harbour.

Very very nice cottage

  • 5 of 5

We found there everything we needed, even plush toys and board games for boys (there are dolls for girls too:)). Quite location, nice walks, easy parking, close to Haverigg as well as to Millom. Thank you very much!

Good position, cozy

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was in a good position near the south coast , close enough to walk around. It was also very convenient for quieter parts of the Lake District. Recommend the steam railway from Ravenglass., and the walk around Wastwater. We stayed with friends visiting from Australia, and having travelled through the more busy areas further North, they were impressed by how quiet it was.

Some of the reviews complain that the cottage was dirty. This was not true at all. There was some mould on the tile grouting in the bathroom, but his was due to the fact that there was no window in th bathroom, just an extractor fan. It really wasn't a problem as far as we were concerned . (Note to Jason; there are some excellent mould removing sprays available . I know because I've just had to do,the same in my bathroom at home!)

There are only storage heaters but we found this to be fine. The cottage seemed to warm up quickly and stay warm.

Finally, we had four days of sunshine to spend with our friends. Must be some sort of record in the Lakes.

Owner's Response: Hi Paula, So pleased you all enjoyed your stay at the Coach House, & thank you for your tips on the mould remover for the bathroom, to be honest just after your visit we actually spent time on the bathroom re-doing the silicone around the bath etc which now looks great and refreshed! haha yes four days of Sun shine in the Lakes is pretty good going but as we say in the Lake District "there is no such thing as bad weather just a bad choice of clothing" ;) hopefully see you again some time in the near future! :) Kind Regards Jason

More for dog-lovers

  • 3 of 5

The property was well equipped, especially the kitchen. Nice touch to have toys for kids as well.

The property does get let to dog-owners and the hard-floors and carpets do have dog-hairs even after hovering extensively every day of our stay.

The area is quiet and OK, although no direct access to the closest beach/lake as this belongs to a holiday park. We ventured into the Lake District most days, so it was a good base for day-trips.

OK but could be better

  • 3 of 5

All was as described about arrival.. Quite hard to find a decent set of directions would be better..

its on the edge of a large caravan site .. local hostelry has limited menu.. a short drive into town and there is an better restaurants..

The problem is the care and previous use of the accommodation..( as witnessed in the visitor book)

If you are a dog owner .. maybe not a problem.. but seems that there are dog hairs everywhere (plenty for your dog to sniff at ).. Dont get me wrong .. i love dogs and cats.. just expect that a rental property to be cleaner..the main problem is the standard of the bathroom.. It has damp patches on the walls and lots of milldew stains around the bath / shower.. my little 4 year old boy did not want to shower due to it being (dirty dad)..

overall an ok place.. kitchen was good (if a little dated) parking is good... Some great areas around like the walks towards the beaches and old lighthouses are highly recommended.. great views towards the lakes area behind.. After my other stay at an owners direct property. (please see review) this is just a liitle below standard.. with a small amount of effort could be a lot better..

Property is dirty and spider infested.

  • 2 of 5

We had to clean & hoover on arrival. Sand all over floor, dirty plates& cups. Blocked sink.

Spiders everywhere!!

Didn't expect to clean etc. Positive the bedding was clean & fresh.

Surrounding area is lovely. Plenty of walks.
