Blindwell House is a charming stone cottage built in 1677 in the former lead mining village of Wensley within the Peak District National Park and close to Matlock which has a good choice of restaurants, shops and supermarkets. The cottage is an ideal base for family holidays or short breaks and is close to popular attractions such as Chatsworth House, Matlock Bath and Bakewell as well as cycle trails and scenic walks.

We are committed to catering to the needs of Families, Walkers and Cyclists and have been approved by VisitEngland after meeting the criteria of these particular Welcome Schemes. We also have achieved a VisitEngland Four Star rating for our accommodation and facilities.

The cottage has been refurbished to a high standard and is perfect for family holidays or for small groups of friends taking a short break. The cottage sleeps up to six people in three bedrooms that can be configured either as doubles or twins depending on your requirements. The master bedroom has room for a cot and also has an ensuite bathroom with shower. In addition there is also a modern and stylish family bathroom. The comfortable lounge has a wood burning stove, leather sofas and Smart TV, and there is an adjoining snug which is ideal for children as it has its own TV and Playstation 3. There is a very well appointed kitchen and a separate dining-room which seats six at the table. The house has gas central heating controlled by a thermostat. There is also free WiFi, an I-pod docking station (with Bluetooth for other devices to connect), a digital radio and a selection of games, DVDs and books for guests to use. We also have maps and guidebooks which provide information on local walks and places to visit.

The cottage has a sunny, paved and secure courtyard garden with a table and chairs, BBQ and an outdoor table-tennis table. A lockable outbuilding houses laundry facilities including washer, tumble-dryer and heated clothes-drying rack as well as cycle racks for up to six bicycles. Off road shared parking is available on The Square next to the house.

Guests receive a welcome basket on arrival and bed linen, towels, fuel and logs are included in the rental price. A cot, high-chair, stair-gates and fire-guard can be set up on request. No smoking is permitted in the cottage and we do not allow pets.

About nicole thompson

Nicole and Russ moved up from the London area 25 years ago and still feel that living in Derbyshire is like being on holiday all year round. It has a lot to do with being surrounded by hills and countryside and the accessibility of great walking country and lovely scenery. We originally came to Derbyshire because of work opportunities as we are both geology graduates and Russ still works in the field of geotechnical engineering and ground remediation. Although we live in the nearby town of Belper, we chose Blindwell House because of its suitability as a holiday let and because it's near one of our favourite picnic spots, Robin Hood's Stride on The Limestone Way, where our two sons have always enjoyed scrambling over the rocks. We are familiar with most of the local attractions and are happy to offer advice on the most suitable visits and places in the area for you and your family or friends to enjoy!

Why nicole thompson chose Derbyshire Dales

We love the fact that The White Peak is a beautiful and accessible area with a really good mix of attractions for everyone to enjoy, including great towns for shopping, stately homes, industrial history and activities for children as well as fantastic walking country and outdoor activities. Blindwell House is situated at the heart of an attractive little rural hamlet overlooking Matlock, with scenic views and countryside walks on the doorstep. Our guests have commented on the convenience of our location for local amenities and the proximity to tourist attractions.

What makes this cottage unique

Blindwell House is located in Wensley, surrounded by other pretty stone-built cottages dating from the development of the local lead mining industry in the 17th century. The cottage is spacious and comfortable and has been completely refurbished to a high standard. The cottage has views over The Derwent Valley from the front of the house and there is shared parking on The Square which is adjacent to the cottage.

The cottage is ideal for families as we have a separate snug with its own TV for children and a choice of twin or double beds in each of the three bedrooms. The cottage is warm in winter as it has thick stone walls and double glazing, and is set into a slight slope allowing guests to access the garden from the third bedroom in the summer.

The sheltered patio garden catches the sun most of the day and is a lovely place to have a cup of coffee or a BBQ, and the outside table tennis table provides the opportunity for a bit of competition. You can also bring bicycles and keep them in the lockable outbuilding, which houses the laundry. There is a well lit path around the side of the property that also leads into the garden.

The welcoming basket was a lovely touch and the cottage was very well equipped to cope with a family holiday. The owners were very thoughtful and we appreciated the information provided about local traffic and directions in addition to details about Chatsworth Country Fair. We would definitely recommend the cottage.

Loved the cottage! Wonderful layout, the kids had there own snug to play games and watch films in the evening, kitchen was great, patio was perfect for outdoor dining, even used the BBQ. Great location, close to many great attractions, beautiful landscapes, easy to pop out and get groceries, and good leisure centre pool too. Best cottage I've ever been in... Just mind your head.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your great review. We are really pleased that you enjoyed your holiday. I'm also glad that you used the pool at the new ARC Leisure Centre in Matlock. For the benefit of future guests, I would like to mention that there are low ceilings above the staircase, the entrance lobby and the snug. Other than this everything is of normal height !

Beautifully equipped, beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a lovely week in Wensley. The cottage has everything you could possibly require, and things you didn't know you needed! Our girls loved the enclosed courtyard garden, table tennis was a huge hit! Wonderfully comfortable beds, clean, fresh décor. The cottage is everything you could hope for when self-catering, and a real credit to its owners.

Excellent

  • 5 of 5

My friends & I thought Blindwell House was one of the best cottages we've stayed at. Location was excellent, being only 5-10 minutes drive from Matlock & provided an idea base for outdoor activities including walking in Mam Tor & Dovedale, plus cycling along High Peak/Tissington Trails. The actual accommodation was very well stocked for the whole stay providing a fully equiped kitchen including a coffee machine with plenty of refill capsules. I was so impressed with the coffee maker that I purchased the same one when I got home! There was also a wide variety of games, DVDs & books to enjoy for evening entertainment. Thank you.
