Blindwell House is a charming stone cottage built in 1677 in the former lead mining village of Wensley within the Peak District National Park and close to Matlock which has a good choice of restaurants, shops and supermarkets. The cottage is an ideal base for family holidays or short breaks and is close to popular attractions such as Chatsworth House, Matlock Bath and Bakewell as well as cycle trails and scenic walks.

We are committed to catering to the needs of Families, Walkers and Cyclists and have been approved by VisitEngland after meeting the criteria of these particular Welcome Schemes. We also have achieved a VisitEngland Four Star rating for our accommodation and facilities.

The cottage has been refurbished to a high standard and is perfect for family holidays or for small groups of friends taking a short break. The cottage sleeps up to six people in three bedrooms that can be configured either as doubles or twins depending on your requirements. The master bedroom has room for a cot and also has an ensuite bathroom with shower. In addition there is also a modern and stylish family bathroom. The comfortable lounge has a wood burning stove, leather sofas and Smart TV, and there is an adjoining snug which is ideal for children as it has its own TV and Playstation 3. There is a very well appointed kitchen and a separate dining-room which seats six at the table. The house has gas central heating controlled by a thermostat. There is also free WiFi, an I-pod docking station (with Bluetooth for other devices to connect), a digital radio and a selection of games, DVDs and books for guests to use. We also have maps and guidebooks which provide information on local walks and places to visit.

The cottage has a sunny, paved and secure courtyard garden with a table and chairs, BBQ and an outdoor table-tennis table. A lockable outbuilding houses laundry facilities including washer, tumble-dryer and heated clothes-drying rack as well as cycle racks for up to six bicycles. Off road shared parking is available on The Square next to the house.

Guests receive a welcome basket on arrival and bed linen, towels, fuel and logs are included in the rental price. A cot, high-chair, stair-gates and fire-guard can be set up on request. No smoking is permitted in the cottage and we do not allow pets.

About nicole thompson

Nicole and Russ moved up from the London area 25 years ago and still feel that living in Derbyshire is like being on holiday all year round. It has a lot to do with being surrounded by hills and countryside and the accessibility of great walking country and lovely scenery. We originally came to Derbyshire because of work opportunities as we are both geology graduates and Russ still works in the field of geotechnical engineering and ground remediation. Although we live in the nearby town of Belper, we chose Blindwell House because of its suitability as a holiday let and because it's near one of our favourite picnic spots, Robin Hood's Stride on The Limestone Way, where our two sons have always enjoyed scrambling over the rocks. We are familiar with most of the local attractions and are happy to offer advice on the most suitable visits and places in the area for you and your family or friends to enjoy!

Why nicole thompson chose Derbyshire Dales

We love the fact that The White Peak is a beautiful and accessible area with a really good mix of attractions for everyone to enjoy, including great towns for shopping, stately homes, industrial history and activities for children as well as fantastic walking country and outdoor activities. Blindwell House is situated at the heart of an attractive little rural hamlet overlooking Matlock, with scenic views and countryside walks on the doorstep. Our guests have commented on the convenience of our location for local amenities and the proximity to tourist attractions.

What makes this cottage unique

Blindwell House is located in Wensley, surrounded by other pretty stone-built cottages dating from the development of the local lead mining industry in the 17th century. The cottage is spacious and comfortable and has been completely refurbished to a high standard. The cottage has views over The Derwent Valley from the front of the house and there is shared parking on The Square which is adjacent to the cottage.

The cottage is ideal for families as we have a separate snug with its own TV for children and a choice of twin or double beds in each of the three bedrooms. The cottage is warm in winter as it has thick stone walls and double glazing, and is set into a slight slope allowing guests to access the garden from the third bedroom in the summer.

The sheltered patio garden catches the sun most of the day and is a lovely place to have a cup of coffee or a BBQ, and the outside table tennis table provides the opportunity for a bit of competition. You can also bring bicycles and keep them in the lockable outbuilding, which houses the laundry. There is a well lit path around the side of the property that also leads into the garden.

One of the most impressive, well thought out cottages we have ever stayed at.

  • 5 of 5

We are so glad we stayed at Blindwell House. We have stayed at tens of cottages across the country over the years and this one has impressed us the most. The renovation has been so well thought out and is sympathetic in respecting its original features, the spaces well designed and used, and it is furnished to a very high standard. The pictures on the website whilst nice, don't do it justice. It feels so nice as soon as you enter. Nicole is a marvelous hostess, and thought of everything. Normally when we stay at a holiday cottage we bring along half a kitchen of utensils and consumables. No need to here! The best addition was the home made marmalade that was gorgeous. The beds are comfy, the mature garden full of the most amazing specimens, the outhouse perfectly equipped for bikers, barbecuers, and table tennis players alike. The only fault was the rain on the last day, which even then was spent relaxing in front of the fire. Oh, one last thing, the place was so clean! We have stayed in larger, grander properties, but can honestly say that this cottage ticked every box. We will be back.

Lovely, interesting, comfortable place to stay

  • 5 of 5

The house is a beautiful stone cottage with excellent kitchen and other facilities. There is a lovely outdoor area with table and (at this time of year) flowers blooming. We were a party of four adults; it would also be great for kids and cyclists. We walked directly from the cottage, as well as drove to several nearby spots with great walking and historical sites. Nicole was thoroughly helpful with all details. We would be very happy to return.

A beautiful, well-equipped cottage.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a lovely week at the cottage and we' were so impressed with all it had to offer. The kitchen was brilliantly appointed with good quality equipment - everything you could need and more. The cottage was easily the highest quality we have booked. Nicole was brilliant and kept us up to date throughout the booking process and during our stay. There was so much to do around the area - we'll definitely be back. Many thanks to Nicole.

A wonderful cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had an enjoyable stay, every need was anticipated and provided for from books, games and a separate den for the children among us, to every kitchen utensil you can think of including a coffee machine. The bedrooms were luxurious and the beds comfortable. The icing on our cake was the welcome pack and balloons for our birthday celebration!

Beautiful cottage in a great location

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I went for a weekend away to the peak district and had a lovely time staying in Blindwell House. It is beautifully decorated and very well equipped with everything we could possibly need. The lady who owns it even put some balloons up for our arrival as it was one of my friends birthdays. The location is ideal for anyone that likes walking; we did a very nice, 10 mile walk on one of the days. I would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone and will hopefully be returning in the future!
