Goat Lodge Farm itself has an extensive view over the Blackwater Estuary, Osea Island, Northey Island and beyond. The Chicken Wing is an extension of the house and converted from a farm office and studio. Set in beautiful countryside within easy reach from London, it sleeps 4. The garden is enclosed - dogs are welcome. The train journey from Liverpool Street Station to Witham is 45 minutes. Travelling by car we are 10 minutes from the A12. People remark on its magical atmosphere, detached from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The Doubleday Family have lived at Goat Lodge Farm for over 50 years. John and Isobel moved in 1993. He is a sculptor and she a primary school teacher. The land is farmed by their longstanding friend and neighbour.

The perfect place to escape the real world.

Visiting from Sweden we found a small corner of Essex that was the English countryside at its best. John and Isobel were the perfect hosts making us feel at home and genuinely welcome.

The cottage was everything a family of four needed and more. The private garden was safe for young children and was a place to relax in the evening. The grounds of the farm are beautiful and full of interesting art, trees and picturesque vistas.

As a family we will cherish our memories of our two week stay with John and Isobel. From the children drawing pictures on the massive Swedish diabase stone that overlooks the cornfields and river Blackwater to the hide and seek in the woods.

We hope we get the opportunity to return again one day to not only stay in a the Chicken Shed but also to say hello to John and Isobel.

Perfect property In beautiful rural surroundings

We loved our stay in Chicken Wing. It was private, very clean and well appointed, set in an ecologically rich area.

The owners Isobel and John, were very helpful and interesting and suggested places to visit which was invaluable as we'd not been to Essex before. John is a renowned sculptor and painter and many of his wonderful paintings hang in the property.

There were so many interesting places to visit; Maldon a pretty little town with harbour and promenade park, the Heybridge basin, Goldhanger (where we heard a Cuckoo) and many Nature Reserves notably Shut Heath Wood.

Rural idyll and lovely hosts

Our family were fortunate enough to stay in the annexe whilst in-between houses. The accomodation was more spacious than the on-line pictures suggest, everything was spotless, garden exceptionally well maintained, beautiful views and welcoming interesting hosts. The immediate countryside is picturesque with some lovely walks together with the coastline @ Goldhanger and Maldon being very accessible. There is lovely woodland a short walk away too - owned by the local Wildlife Trust - that was full of bluebells during our visit.

Our children (aged 7 and 4) were entertained by the hosts chickens and really took to Isobel (co-owner) wanting to knock on the farmhouse door to say hello to her as soon as they arrived back after school. Isobel was very welcoming and kind to our children which is something we did not take for granted especially as our stay lasted 18 nights! Tolerance was also shown to our dog, who we think is well behaved, but was even more facinated with the chickens much to the cockerel's consternation! I think their egg laying may have been affected but hopefully have picked up again after we leftt... John is a talented artist and also a kind, interesting gentleman to listen too.

I would wholeheartedly recommend the hosts, the accomodation should you be interested in exploring this lovely part of Essex. The A12 is 15 mins drive away so other areas of the county are very assessible too.

A perfect getaway

We stayed in the Chicken Wing whilst spending a week visiting family who live locally. The location is perfect and the accommodation was exactly what we needed. The owners, Isobel and John, couldn't have been more attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed. The layout inside the Chicken Wing is very well thought out with two bedrooms, a bathroom and a separate shower wet room. The kitchen and dining/lounge area are also perfectly appointed. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this accommodation to friends and family.

We stayed for 4 weeks whist in-between houses. Sorry to leave the wonderful surroundings with walks from the front door

Mine hosts could not haven any more helpful;

Located for the local towns and easily accessible the wonderful beaches from Brightlingsea right around to Felixstowe'

Highly recommendable if your dates are lucky enough to be available.

Chicken accommodation will quickly become a place many will go back to time and again'

Staying in The Chicken Wing

We stayed in the Chicken Wing for 3 weeks over the summer and had a wonderful time. The accomodation was perfect for ourselves and our two children. The Barn is situated on a farm from which the views are outstanding. The owners were extremely welcoming and helpful. The property was clean and well maintained and as the owner works in the Art world the property would appeal to the creative type. We went to visit Maldon and Walton on the Naze and also explored locally and found some nice pubs and countryside walks. We had a wonderful holiday and it was extremely good value and I would highly recommend The Chicken Wing.

Local amenities within walking/cycling distance however, car essential for venturing further afield

The nearby estuary is an exceptional area for birdwatching with excellent opportunities to see rare wildfowl. Within walking distance, the Essex Naturalist Trust owns Shut Heath Wood and there are many other countryside walks in the vicinity. The Blackwater also has centres for sailing, canoeing and windsurfing at Maldon, Goldhanger and Tollesbury.

Village shop within walking distance. There are shopping centres and banks in Maldon and Witham. There are four pubs/restaurants within 1 mile.

Distances to nearby towns: Witham - 4 miles, Maldon - 4.3 miles, Chelmsford - 13.2 miles, Colchester - 17 miles

Coast/Beach: Estuary/coastal walks - nearest 4.4 miles, Beach at West Mersea - 14.6 miles
