A grade II, five-bedroom thatched cottage in the rural North Devon village of High Bickington, Umberleigh, which sleeps 11 (+1), and has 3 bathrooms. The large living room has a wood-burning stove, and the farmhouse-style kitchen-breakfast room has a range cooker and 8-burner hob. The ground floor also has a snug and family room. Open countryside is within 2 minutes walk, and Exmoor, Dartmoor and the North Devon coast are all within easy reach, as is RHS Garden Rosemoor. The village has a small shop, two pubs and a Post Office.

On your arrival you will be greeted with a homemade Devon Cream Tea!

About Sarah Sidders

We are Joe and Sarah Sidders, owners of Rambler Cottage, parents to three small children who are all now of school age. Joe is deputy head of a senior school on the outskirts of Bath and Sarah is an artist and textile designer. Sarah grew up in Devon and Joe has followed suit with a love for the west-country and Scilly.

Year round we aspire to spend many happy sun filled days on the North Devon beaches teaching our children to surf and return home with finds from the tide line to use the space in Rambler Cottage to be creative! We love

Winter warming by the wood burner with mulled wine, and cooking seasonal roast dinners with local meat in a home perfect for socialising which coincidently has enough chimney breasts to hang a stocking for everyone in the extended family.

Why Sarah Sidders chose Umberleigh

Sarah grew up on just the other side of Dartmoor and Joe has followed with a love for the south-west. Wanting to own a property that we can escape to from the busyness of day-to-day work and the school run we looked to what we feel is the hidden secret of central north Devon. With amazing beaches, moorland and a diversity of interests all within easy reach we always eagerly anticipate our next visit.

Rambler Cottage is packed full of historical features and offers a cosy yet spacious feel that is perfect for us as a family to relax and be creative in. Family walks are a favourite past time, and many can be found direct from the door and a little further a field in a variety of landscapes: open moorland, coastal cliff tops, ancient woodland, deep river valleys and slightly tamer on the Tarka Trail.

  • The 3 double bedrooms are all of good size with enough room to put a travel cot up in. Two travel cots are available. All bedrooms require access by stairs, with bedroom number 1 being on the 2nd floor. All stairs access can be restricted by stairgates/doors. Bedroom 4 is a triple room where one of the singles can be turned into a daybed. The beds are in an 'L' Shape formation which means excited children can't make eye contact once lying down! We have a small table in Bedroom 2 if anyone need to work whilst away!

The enclosed private garden to the rear of the property has an enchanting feel to it, it has a grassed area perfect for little ones to play. We have a collection of outdoor furniture from wooden benches to portable seats that means you can move them around to suit your use, it has been designed for a relaxed style eating out. A barbecue is also available for use. There is also a small, raised pond. The family room has a natural stone floor and is set up with a table that can be used as an alternative eating area or for arts and crafts, we also have a number of games and puzzles and in here.

Beautiful house and very well equipped

There was 10 of us and 3 dogs, the cottage was beautiful and very well equipped for pretty much everything! There were bowls and towels for the dogs and lots of different games etc for the humans. There was plenty of space to spread out so that we were not on top of each other.

Super cottage

What a fabulous cottage! Tastefully decorated with lots of beautiful colours and very comfortable too. Probably the most well appointed cottage we have stayed in and the perfect amount of room for larger parties. Fab to have a table big enough to sit everyone together plus another comfortable dining room for those of us who unfortunately had to do some work while there (boo). The freshly made scones, clotted cream, jam and bread on arrival was such a treat! Owner/locals were very friendly and the village shop is such a great idea (try the Devon butter and locally made bread from there). People of restricted mobility may struggle with the bottom stairs and that's the only thing I'd say be conscious of. I'd highly recommend this cottage and can't wait to visit again!

Beautiful house

We booked this house for a family weekend away for my dads 70th birthday. It was fantastic! The cream tea was a lovely welcome and great start to our break.

The house is beautiful and very well equipped, everything has been thought of, even down to the last detail.

We had an age range of 8 weeks to 70 years old and we all enjoyed it greatly.

We would definitely recommend this property and look forward to coming back in the future.

Lovely homely cottage

Stayed here for a wedding which was at Millbrook estate. The cottage was only a 5 mins drive from there. The cottage was well appointed and homely. Pam the house keeper was friendly and had made fresh scones for our arrival.
