Lovely homely cottage

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here for a wedding which was at Millbrook estate. The cottage was only a 5 mins drive from there. The cottage was well appointed and homely. Pam the house keeper was friendly and had made fresh scones for our arrival.

Grandson loved the playroom with all the toys plus selection of games. Kitchen had everything we needed. Wood burner an added bonus. Only downside is parking

Character cottage - a proper Tardis!

  • 5 of 5

Rambler Cottage looked as though it would be right for us, but it exceeded our expectations! Olde worlde, quaint and full of character, but kitted out with everything we needed (except perhaps some pyrex bowls?), it was ideal for us in the run up to our daughter's wedding - a place where the whole family could stay together, brilliantly well set up for our toddler grandson. The bride and bridesmaids were able to use the cottage to get themselves ready on the big day - and that meant two extra toddlers coming along for breakfast and play time - but it all worked perfectly.

We had to do one big shop in Barnstaple for our stay, but we found the post office / shop and the community shop had everything else we needed, and surprisingly helpful opening hours. I hadn't expected to have Sunday opening in such a tiny village!

The only downside was the fact that when someone is showering everyone has to remember to hold off from using the taps, but we adapted and worked around it fine, despite the cottage being full nearly every night.

Other thoughts... Pam, the housekeeper, was very helpful... Wifi was good... welcome pack (including scones, clotted cream and jam) was great. Info on the house and area was good. The little garden is great, safe for small children. Beds and armchairs were comfy. The two good-sized dining areas gave us great flexibility. WINNER - blackout blinds as well as curtains!! What a great touch. Everything seems to have been so well thought out.

Overall, Rambler Cottage is highly recommended for relaxed family purposes, especially those with small children and dogs!

Really lovely

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time in the cottage. The village of High Bickington is very friendly and the Old George Inn is great for food. Everywhere is very welcoming of dogs also. We took ours to Instow, Saunton Sands, and Woollacombe beaches in the height of summer with no problems. Pamela left us some delicious scones on arrival. If you are tall the ceilings in the cottage are quite low in places, but my husband who is 6' 2" coped just fine. The stairs are pretty steep in the cottage but they didn't cause us any problems. On the whole this is one of the best equipped holiday cottages I have stayed in :-)

About Sarah Sidders

We are Joe and Sarah Sidders, owners of Rambler Cottage, parents to three small children who are all now of school age. Joe is deputy head of a senior school on the outskirts of Bath and Sarah is an artist and textile designer. Sarah grew up in Devon and Joe has followed suit with a love for the west-country and Scilly.

Year round we aspire to spend many happy sun filled days on the North Devon beaches teaching our children to surf and return home with finds from the tide line to use the space in Rambler Cottage to be creative! We love

Winter warming by the wood burner with mulled wine, and cooking seasonal roast dinners with local meat in a home perfect for socialising which coincidently has enough chimney breasts to hang a stocking for everyone in the extended family.

Sarah Sidders purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Sarah Sidders chose Umberleigh

Sarah grew up on just the other side of Dartmoor and Joe has followed with a love for the south-west. Wanting to own a property that we can escape to from the busyness of day-to-day work and the school run we looked to what we feel is the hidden secret of central north Devon. With amazing beaches, moorland and a diversity of interests all within easy reach we always eagerly anticipate our next visit.

What makes this cottage unique

Rambler Cottage is packed full of historical features and offers a cosy yet spacious feel that is perfect for us as a family to relax and be creative in. Family walks are a favourite past time, and many can be found direct from the door and a little further a field in a variety of landscapes: open moorland, coastal cliff tops, ancient woodland, deep river valleys and slightly tamer on the Tarka Trail.
