About Hazel Spatschek

Hello, I'm Hazel and I have been living in Maureillas for the past 10 years, making the move from Manchester to a sunnier climate.

When the opportunity came up to buy and restore another lovely traditional French village home I jumped at the chance and, after a couple of years hard labour, it’s great to welcome new guests to experience this fantastic place.

I have rented lots of houses for my own holidays, learning loads along the way about what makes a good home for both family vacations and group getaways. I’ve kept all this in mind whilst renovating and I'm really happy with the results, come and see for yourself!

Why Hazel Spatschek chose Vallespir

Maureillas is a traditional, friendly village with everything we need for day to day living.

Ideally situated between the Med and mountains we enjoy an outdoor lifestyle making the most of the reputed 300 days of sunshine a year.

What makes this house unique

The house is located in the heart of the village, the shops and bars are a two minute stroll away.

The south facing terraces provide perfect sun traps for enjoying the winter sunshine while the shady garden provides a cool retreat during the hotter months.

The large and airy rooms ensure that everyone will feel comfortable to spread out without getting on top of each other.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The house is just as beautiful as the pictures and if you are looking to enjoy a proper French village, this is the place for you! Highly recommend this place for a nice relaxing holiday away with family.

Delightful village home with views near and far

  • 5 of 5

28 Rue des Aires was the perfect headquarters and cozy nest for our family gathering of my wife, two daughters, son, and one significant other. Perfect bed and bath setup. All of the rear-facing rooms have their own versions of sunny backyard and mountain views. An unexpected bonus were the back gardens lovingly developed and maintained by our hosts, Hazel and Aid, who live in the adjoining house. We walked the streets of Maureillais for morning pastries, evening wine, and for the sheer pleasure of it. We enjoyed trails accessible from the house. Our daughter and her boyfriend ran on trails to meet us at the busy diverse Saturday market in Ceret. A day at the beach was 30 minutes away as was another day higher in the mountains. A perfect house in every way. We'd return in a heart beat and hope that we do.

Wonderful house in an excellent location!

  • 5 of 5

We were a party of seven and the house was surprisingly roomy. The back garden is lovely for lunches in the sunshine. The pictures don't do justice to the views from the back balconies. Watching the sun set behind Mt. Canigou is magical! The location on the border with Spain made it a straightforward drive from Barcelona airport. There is excellent access to shopping, historic Roman and Greek sites, the Mediterranean, hill walks, and, for the train spotters, the narrow gauge Train Jaune. We had a wonderful week!

large, lovely renovated house with Pyrenees views, very nice owners

  • 5 of 5

This impeccably renovated four-bedroom house located in a village a few kilometers away from the charming town of Céret is a real find. The bedrooms are all capacious and bright, the eat-in kitchen a pleasure to cook in, and it was a treat to breakfast in the big, flower-filled garden, and watch the martins and bats swoop through the twilight from the back terrace , with the outlines of the Pyrenees in the distance (and a glass of the excellent local rosé in hand, naturally). There is even a well-furnished house library--we could have happily continued to read our way through it for another week. It's particularly convenient that the residence offers three and a half baths over three floors, in contrast to many French rental properties, where you can find one loo serving several bedrooms. Parking is easy, wifi reliable, and the area is well served with grocery stores and other amenities. The English-speaking owners, who live next door, were friendly and generous with time and suggestions. This is a lovely part of France, where the mountains meet the coastal plains in lush, orchard-filled foothills, and it's still relatively undiscovered and untrodden, in comparison to Provence. All in all, a first-rate experience--we'd love to return for another stay, which says it all.

Relaxing Retreat in the Pyrenees

  • 4 of 5

We loved staying in this Maureillas village house! The owners were both helpful throughout the booking process and welcoming when we arrived. It's perfect for a relaxing stay in the foothills of the French Pyrenees and being so close to Perpignan, Collioure and Spanish Costa Brava, there are no shortage of things to do. Of course, you can always put your feet up and admire the mountain views from the lovely back garden, or try one of the village bars/restaurants for some real Catalan hospitality. Please can we come back again?

Highly recommend this gem

  • 5 of 5

We highly recommend this gem. Beautiful, spacious, comfortable house situated in a friendly village. Everything has been thought of and catered for. Hazel and Ade are lovely hosts who made us feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. High speed WI-FI is a great bonus. The perfect base to explore this pretty region of France or border-hop to Spain. (Barcelona & Girona well worth visits). Lots of things to see and do and we thoroughly enjoyed a village festa night with paella and dancing! Friendly bar at the end of the street serves delicious home-cooked food. Salvador Dali house and museum (at night) makes a great day out. Spectacular views on the 'Little Yellow Train' journey which goes through the Pyrenees. Whether you want to do a lot or a little this is the perfect place to stay.

A Gem in a beautiful part of France

  • 5 of 5

This house in Maureillas is a real gem. It has been very lovingly refurbishment by the owners to a fantastic standard. We stayed early on in its new life as a holiday house and it will no doubt continue to get even better as work continues to make it a really special place to spend time.

The owners are both artists and that is so apparent in the house itself with lovely little touches everywhere and details that make it an out of the ordinary experience. They could not have been nicer or more helpful, from our initial contact to when we arrived and throughout our stay. They clearly love the house and the village and are really helpful with where to go and what to do, the good restaurants and local tips about getting the most out of your stay.

Maureillas itself is the quintessential Pyrenean village with fabulous old townhouses and a triumphant square with a little bar. There are local shops, boulangerie for fresh bread and goodies every morning and even a cork museum! The museum tells you all about the cork trees you'll see everywhere as you explore the gorgeous countryside.

We did lots of lovely walks into the Pyrenees straight from the front door, and even walked across the mountains into Spain one of the days which was a real thrill. The local town of Ceret is very chic and has nice restaurants and a great market. We went to a swimming lake with zip wires a short drive away and also to the gorgeous beaches on the coast which are about 25 minutes away in the car. If you're prepared to drive for about an hour you can explore the Spanish coast too and even the famous Salvador Dali museum in nearby Figures which we loved.

I would highly recommend stay here :-)
