Overview

About the property

Welcoming farmhouse near St Foy La Grande, Gironde, Dordogne, France - Charming, spacious house, peaceful hamlet 5 mins From Market Town, Sight Seeing, Wine & Activities.

A lovely, spacious farmhouse with a stunning, secure pool, (sleeps 10 in 5 BIG bedrooms), set in a peaceful hamlet in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region, Les Galineaux is ideally located for loads of great activities, including first class golf courses, among the vines and sunflowers that stretch for miles around. 5 minutes from the river there are all sorts of water activities close by, as well as horse riding, tennis, chateaux, vineyards etc....

Full of character and charm the house boasts exposed stone walls, traditional wooden flooring, stone flags, fire places, ancient beams all offset against soft muted colours. A contemporary shower room, bathroom and separate loo, luxury linen and a new country kitchen add comfort and convenience. Furnished with French furniture and contemporary pieces this a wonderful, relaxed and fun home for your holiday.

Refurbished to a high standard but in keeping with the rustic character of the house, the kitchen is well kitted out for cooking and baking, including English and French cookery books for you to enjoy the produce and delights of the local markets. Help yourself to home grown herbs and tomatoes from the garden and enjoy long and lazy meals on the terrace or under the shade of the ancient wisteria. BBQ also available.

A child friendly house, with secure garden and separately gated pool area, Les Galineaux has the usual high chair, stair gates and travel cot but we also provide toys, a play kitchen, extra toddler paddling pool, kiddy table etc. For older children (and adults) we have a table tennis table, badminton, pop up pool - it's not big but does the job for splashing around and cooling down on hot summer days - darts board, golf clubs and a couple of bikes you are welcome to use.

The layout of the house, almost in two halves, is ideal to allow privacy either with different families at opposite ends of the house or the kids on one side and the adults at the other! A spacious bedroom with king size bed on the ground floor with its own entrance from the garden is convenient for the elderly or those with mobility issues. The cool and welcoming large, country kitchen is at the heart of this lovely home. French doors onto the garden allow the dappled light and summer air to filter through.

There are 4 spacious bedrooms plus a mezzanine on the landing. This is less private but has the advantage of a four poster king size bed, antique armoire and a balcony for morning coffee. It is also close to the pretty blue twin room, convenient for a family. The master bedrooms (room 5) is a wonderfully large room with old beams and feature chimney. It has twin beds which can also be set up as a super king bed offering flexibility. It is reached by its own spiral staircase.

The ground floor bedroom (another king size bed) with whitewashed stone walls and beams, is again a spacious room with a sofa and French doors that open onto the garden. A traditional Godin wood stove adds character and warmth on autumn nights. A further double bed room is adjacent to bathrooms.

Reputed for its wines and fine gastronomy, there is an abundance of vineyards, truffles and foie gras, restaurants, patisseries and local produce in the area, including the oyster festival in Eymet and Medieval feast throughout the summer.

This is a truly wonderful place for a holiday!

About Aveline EVANS

We live in Edinburgh, Scotland and have spent much time dreaming of having a holiday home in France. We were there a few years ago and fell in love with this wonderful farmhouse! So homely and welcoming...

Packed with such a varied range of things to do, for children as well as adults, we felt this area was great and we could easily come back here again and again.

With 3 children now 17, 14 and 12, and numerous years of renting houses or camping I am well aware of what makes a happy holiday. We have tried to think of all the little things that help reduce the stress of traveling with babies, toddlers, teenagers and even grumpy adults!

We very much hope you will love Les Galineaux as much as we do...

Aveline EVANS purchased this farmhouse in 2014

Why Aveline EVANS chose La Roquille

Our holiday home is a home and not a purpose designed house with minimal fittings and basic comfort. The house is over 250 sqm. The bedrooms are truly spacious with king size beds (or singles) and luxury linen and bath towels.

The living areas are furnished with taste combining antique French furniture with modern pieces.

The kitchen is well kitted out for enthusiastic cooks and again does not just include the basics, and of course the pool will give you and the children hours of fun and relaxation.

Les Galineaux has a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. The location is perfect for a busy or a restful break - it's up to you!

Do please read the reviews... our past guest say it all.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Warm, welcoming, homely and very spacious. Well kitted out kitchen where you can cook properly, loads of toys and kit for kids. Great location with quick access to 100s of things to do!

Guestbook comments from the owner

A wonderful break in November sampling wines and fine food! 22 degrees, we ate outside - freezing and wet when we left London! St Emilion and Pomerol so easy to get to, Bergearac well worth a visit. We loved your house, so spacious and nice and cosy with the fires going, comfortable and full of character. Will be in touch about dates in the summer. The kids will love it! Many thanks

Relaxing and peaceful farmhouse

  • 4 of 5

Great location with fields, vineyards and woods close by. Central location within easy reach of all the major markets and night time markets and a good supermarket some 5 minutes away. This is in a quiet location enabling oneself to totally unwind with a nice pool to cool down in. I would totally recommend the local chateau on the right towards the supermarket down a bumpy chalk drive. They do a cracking red for 5 and a better one for 12 euros.

Wonderful relaxing rural retreat

  • 5 of 5

We visited Les Galineaux with our family, brother and pregnant girlfriend, two children aged 7 and 9 and parents over the course of a fortnight. Gorgeous spot only ten minutes from a pretty town and huge supermarket nearby. Canoed down the Dordogne, visited various chateaus, vineyards and a lake with watersports for the kids. Lovely morning runs through the fields, beautiful medieval villages within a short drive and essentially a thoroughly relaxing stay. Well maintained, quiet and pretty villa.

What a perfect break in this beautiful Farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

The Farmhouse was packed full of rustic charm and very tastefully furnished. I felt there was a balance between maintaining original features while having a few modern luxuries such as a good shower and Smeg fridge! It was so peaceful, clean and well equipped. Having the bikes was a real bonus as we could get out and about. Great bargains to be had at the local markets and not too far from Bordeaux, where we spent a lovely day sightseeing before arriving at the house. Highly recommended.

Loved the house - had fantastic holiday!

  • 5 of 5

A lovely house - especially enjoyed us all being able to sit round the table eating our breakfast outside in the morning sunshine, and then again at lunch when it is lovely in the shade in the heat of the day!

Lots to see and do nearby - went paddle boarding in the river; swimming in the lake, not to mention all the fantastic markets.

Absolutely fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely fantastic time had by all. House was beautiful, exceeded our expectations. Lots of space for us to chill both outside in the garden, playing chess and inside in front of the log burning fire with a glass or two of gorgeous French wine from nearby wineries. And cheese! Plenty of day trip opportunities. We'd recommend Bergerac, half an hour away, Eymet , half hour in another direction (great Italian restaurant) and Bordeaux is beautiful. Saint Emilion was a beautiful town, about 40 minutes west and well worth a visit. Sainte Foy La Grande is lovely. Gorgeous walk along Dordogne. Lovely restaurants Le Huit and Victor Hugo were our favourites. Market day on a Saturday well worth a potter around. All in all would thoroughly recommend staying here. We will be back!

A traditional country house in a tranquil setting

  • 4 of 5

We spent two weeks at this lovely old French home and had a wonderful time. The house offers comfortable accommodation in a traditional style, is tastefully decorated throughout and there was plenty of room for our family of six plus granny. The kitchen was very well equipped with all mod cons but manages to retain the traditional character of the house. In addition there is a sunny garden with pop up pool.

The house is situated in a quiet hamlet but is very near to a large hypermarket. Saint Foye la Grande is about a 10 minute drive and has plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops as well as the fabulous market on Saturday - not to be missed!

We were very well looked after by the owner who gave us lots of tips about where to go and what to see. We particularly enjoyed the lake beach at Place de la Cadie, the Parc du Ciel - fabulous rope courses through the trees and a lovely outdoor pool, and the night market in Duras.
