This cosy three-bedroom cottage has recently been refurbished and offers comfortable accommodation for six people. The oldest parts of Orphan Crag are believed to date from the 17th century, with the property retaining many original features, such as oak beams. The cottage has been sympathetically refurbished, incorporating a wood burning stove, fully equipped kitchen and cosy dining and living rooms.

Situated in the small village of Underbarrow within the Lake District National Park, Orphan Crag provides an excellent base for exploring the local area, by foot or car. Tucked away at the head of the beautiful Lyth Valley, the property is in an ideal location in which to enjoy the stunning local scenery, as well as providing easy access to the heart of the Lakes.

The village boasts a pub serving excellent food whilst the bustling market town of Kendal, with its many shops, is just a short drive away. There are several other local eateries in the surrounding villages and Staveley, ten minutes drive away, is home to the Hawkshead Brewery. Just a little further and you reach the town of Bowness and Lake Windermere.

We live in Nottinghamshire and have three grown up children. We both work and spent most of our spare time in 2014 completely refurbishing the cottage with the help of friends and family. We love walking, and enjoy a good meal out in a local pub or restaurant, and the cottage is perfect for both of these.

An absolute gem of a cottage

The owners of this cottage have thought of everything to make your stay here about as perfect as it could possibly get. The accommodation was exactly as described, spotlessly clean, well maintained and in a superb location for exploring the Lakes. The kitchen was well equipped for the nights we dined in and everything was easy to use. Beds were comfortable and immaculate with white linen. There was even a bottle of complimentary wine and a box of shortbread biscuits on arrival which was a lovely touch. We enjoyed every second of our stay here and would highly recommend it to others. We will definitely be back. At the bottom of the lane is a pub called The Punchbowl which was an added bonus and serves the most amazing food, so this is well worth a visit. Suggest that you book though as it does get busy.

We wanted to buy a cottage in the Lakes and Orphan Crag ticked all the boxes, being close to the central Lakes area but slightly off the beaten track.

Activity and Interests


Easy access from the M6, a car is essential.


Kendal - 4 miles

Bowness on Windermere - 8 miles

Further Details:

Apart from the village pub and restaurant nearby Crosthwaite and Brigsteer both have pubs serving excellent food. Nearby attractions include local walks overlooking the Lyth Valley along Scout Scar, and places to visit close by include Sizergh Castle.

Outside: The property has an enclosed rear garden with patio and views across fields and a small front garden. Roadside parking is available outside the cottage.
