Luxury Holiday Home near Limoux. Edge Of Village Setting With Beautiful Countryside Views

Maison Pech Mil enjoys a private, countryside setting with lovely near and far rural views of vineyards and hills and is surrounded by an orchard and mature gardens planted with lavender, rose, oleander and cistus. The south-facing terrace and pool area provide a wonderful place to unwind and soak up the sun and a large awning-covered area provides space for alfresco dining poolside. The main accommodation on the upper ground floor (swimming pool level) opens on to terraces and balcony areas on all sides and offers a perfect way to experience the joy and ease of indoor/outdoor living throughout those warm and sunny Languedoc days - you can choose sun or shade at any time of day. The huge open-plan living room with dining area and kitchen is the heart of Pech Mil and is wonderfully spacious with open views. French windows and sliding doors open on to balcony terraces to the east and west – the latter a perfect place for a glass of the excellent local fizz while watching the sun go down! Also on this level are three double bedrooms (one with king size bed, one with double bed, one with two single beds), one ensuite shower room and a large, family bathroom with bath and walk-in shower.

The lower ground floor has an integral apartment with exterior access. Known as the garden apartment, it offers guests a fourth (double) bedroom, a large bathroom with walk-in shower, a TV lounge (wifi available throughout the house) and a good sized kitchen with the house washing machine, tumble dryer and a second dishwasher. The shady, garden terrace here faces north and includes a built-in BBQ area and a large garden dining table with eight chairs set under the arches - the ideal spot for escaping the midday sun for lunch on very hot days. The kitchen has been set up to support the BBQ eating area and is well equipped with the usual crockery, cutlery etc.

The large garden and orchard are ideal for children to run around in, and many shady spots can be found on garden benches under the fruit trees and pines. There are also plenty of herbs by the house for cooking.

Pech Mil is a comfortable, family home and has been lovingly revitalised and updated by its owners – and while the house oozes a laidback feel, we hope you’ll find a touch of luxury too. We live here ourselves for much of the year, and, for our guests, Pech Mil definitely provides a home from home.

About Naomi & Richard Tilbrook

After careers in computing, HR and teaching, we left Devon in 2012 to semi-retire in France. We have lived in our lovely house near Limoux since 2013 and are proud of the upgrading and renovations we have made. We find the quality of life here is wonderful and we like nothing better than to sit outside on one of our terraces soaking up the scenery, which is always green despite the sunshine. Our tiny village of Castelreng is old and traditional, typical of this area in the Aude with its quiet streets and an old church dating back to roman times.

Why Naomi & Richard Tilbrook chose Castelreng

After holidaying many times in the area we knew this part of the south of France was for us. It fulfilled our wish to live somewhere that not only gave us long warm summers which began early and stretched well into the autumn but also offered a sense of openness and space and a simple, relaxed way of life. To end up in the heart of Blanquette de Limoux (sparkling wine) country with its patchwork of green-striped vineyards was an added bonus. Here we have found a life of peace and calm far from the hubbub, traffic jams and crowds of other parts.

What makes this house unique

The house itself is beautifully set in its own grounds, with plenty of space for a quiet moment on your own as well as easy family gathering. The pool is especially handy being close to the house, making it easy to keep an eye on children even when preparing meals. Lighting both in and around the pool means the kids (and adults) can swim into the evening while others simply enjoy those balmy temperatures relaxing on the terrace.

The house with its many entrances and garden areas are fun for children of all ages to explore. The private, heated pool is south-facing and secluded by hedges and garden. The pool is 10m x 4.5m, just over 2.5m deep at one end and at the other, a shallow area for children at 85cm. The pool has a solar powered rolling cover for quick and effortless opening and closing – and meets French pool safety requirements. During your stay we come round at your convenience and by arrangement to clean the pool and help keep it in tip-top condition for you. Good quality sun loungers and parasols are provided. For picnics you’ll find folding chairs, rug, cool box and bag with plastic plates, cups etc. The kitchen on the lower level houses the utility area and has a double sink, four gas jets, fridge, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, iron, ironing board and a clothes dryer. Any pool toys and garden games are also stored here. Toddlers will need to be carefully supervised around the steps up to the house and near the edges of the garden where there are steep banks. Fresh linen and towels, including pool/beach towels are provided and changed weekly. All bedrooms have high quality mattresses, linen and towels. Hair dryers are also provided in each bedroom. The downstairs lounge has a 42” TV with numerous channels, including UK. There are also DVD and CD players and a bookcase stacked with board games, books, DVDs / CDs. A perfect hideaway or quiet cool space to while away an afternoon with a good book.

We stayed in Pech Mil for a week this year, having had to cancel last year for family reasons. Naomi and Richard had been very understanding last year and we really wanted to come this year. We have stayed in many houses but think Pech Mil was just about as good as we have found. The house is immaculate and very well equipped. If you can't find what you need then you have not looked hard enough as it will be there! The house is over two levels but as we were only two we just used to main level by the pool. We had a very hot week and made lots of use of the pool. The welcome bottles of wine were very welcome on arrival. There is plenty to do in the local area but we really did very little and enjoyed every minute of it! Grant and Jenny.

Total relaxation.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful villa. It is finished to a very high standard and has everything you could possibly need during your stay. The pool was cleaned regularly and the linens were also changed during our stay. Shopping and restaurants are a short drive away. The welcome pack is useful especially the local wine to get you started on your discovery of the different wines this area has to offer. We were able to BBQ near the pool or there is another BBQ area at the rear of the property and we also cooked in the well equipped kitchen. Richard and Naomi are the perfect hosts and can't do enough to ensure you are comfortable and have everything you need. We are a family with 2 girls 12 and 11. The girls enjoyed their holiday and made full use of the pool and large garden area. Pech Mil is the perfect place for a get away from it all relaxing holiday.

Beautiful holiday home with everything you need.

We really enjoyed our stay at this property and found the attention to detail wonderful with all those little bits taken care of, like adapters for electronics which I always forget. We found this a real home from home. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything we needed. The property has been decorated to a high standard and is beautiful throughout. The pool was beautiful and clean and the provision of woggles were really helpful for us with 2 young children. Would definitely stay here again. Thank you to our wonderful hosts.

Excellently equipped villa.

This is by far the best equipped villa we have stayed in during 8 years of holidaying in France. Everything you could need is supplied (perfect if you are flying) and the welcome pack included enough for an evening meal, breakfast the next day and local wine. Naomi and Richard were excellent hosts. They are always available to help if needed but are never intrusive.The house was immaculate and the pool was cleaned regularly. The area was peaceful with good shopping a short drive away and there was enough in the area to entertain us and our teenage children.

Car: necessary

There is so much to see and explore in this area that it is hard to mention only a few attractions! The landscape offers rolling hills of vineyards and sunflower fields giving way further south to majestic crags, deep gorges and tumbling waterfalls. This is a magnificent area for wild river swimming and kayaking or for taking it easy relaxing in natural thermal spas. This part of Aude is Cathar Country with its ancient ruined fortresses on sheer rocky outcrops such as Montsegur, Peyrepertuse and Queribus – not forgetting of course the famous medieval Cite of Carcassonne, a world heritage site, with its cobbled streets and impressive gothic towers and ramparts.

There are plenty of opportunities too for walking in outstanding scenery at any pace. Even from the house you can just walk out through the vineyards and over the hills, enjoying the mountain views and smells of thyme underfoot. Cycling is popular here and the Tour de France has been through Limoux several times.


The Mediterranean coast is an hour’s drive away - the nearest beach is Narbonne Plage, wide and sandy with the usual tourist facilities. Further south are the more interesting beaches of Leucate Plage and Le Franqui, each with fine sand and relaxed, friendly restaurants.

Argeles North, just south of Perpignan, is said to be one of the finest beaches in France with its idyllic views of the Pyrenees. Nearer to Spain you will find the delightful and charming, artist-rich village of Collioure.


Carcassonne airport (Ryanair) is 35 minutes by car.

Toulouse Blagnac airport is under an hour and a half's drive.

The airports at Beziers and Perpignan are both an hour and 45 minutes away.

Girona airport in Spain is 2.5 hours away.

A car is recommended due to our rural location.


Limoux with all its amenities is 10 minutes' drive from the house. Carcassonne and La Cite are 35 minutes by car.

The many Cathar castles in the vicinity range from 30 to 60 minutes drive away.

Further Details:

The charming local town of Limoux with the river Aude running through it boasts four supermarkets, numerous wine cellars, a bustling weekly market for fresh fruit and vegetables, several boulangeries and delicatessens. On Tuesday evenings throughout July and August there is a colourful night market with food stalls and arts and crafts. The pretty cloistered square is the scene for many cafes, bars and open-air restaurants serving local food and wines and on those balmy summer evenings there is every chance of a concert or local musicians playing to entertain you while you dine or just enjoy an aperitif.

As well as the reasonably priced restaurants in the square in Limoux there are several well-renowned restaurants in the vicinity serving excellent food. Wine tasting is a must, whether that’s sipping the local sparkling Blanquettes and Cremants or sampling the crispy whites and fruity reds of this part of the Languedoc.

Kayaking on the River Aude is available just south of Limoux and is a great family day out for confident swimmers. You may get a bit wet whilst paddling through the gentle rapids but you will feel exhilarated by the end!

A deposit of £450 is also required at the full payment stage. This will be refunded in full within two weeks of the end of your stay provided there are no losses or damages to the property

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is Saturday in high season (14 July to 31 August 2018) however for June, early July and September bookings please contact us with your requirements and we will try and accommodate you. The house is available from 4.30pm on the day of arrival and guests are asked to leave by 10am on the day of departure.
