Farmhouse in verdant valley just 7 km from Ronda and only a km from Arriate. - Set In A 5 Acre Smallholding, Encircled By River, 10 Minute Walk To Shops And Restaurants

A traditional country farmhouse, south-east facing,set in 5 acres of private fertile land in a beautiful valley just 10 minutes from the city of Ronda. Only 10 minutes walk from the wonderful village of Arriate, known for its local produce and now famous for its excellent bars and restaurants. An area prized for its landscape and popular with walkers, birdwatchers and cyclists. La Alcantarilla was originally a walnut and apple smallholding, and its rolling land is bordered by a river, veined by a stream and encircled by a Moorish water channel. The water emanates from a mountain spring and crosses the brook over a Moorish stone aqueduct at the far end of the vegetable garden. Beautifully renovated,the large south-east facing property is divided into two;the rental house and the owners´home. The rental house has both a private entrance courtyard, a walled garden,and exclusive use of the swimming pool. There is also much shared terrain. The house is painted in lime white and stony hues, with natural linen curtains and green/blue accents. There is an emphasis on traditional building materials so earthenware tiles have been used on the floor and old pan tiles on the roof. Reclaimed patterned hydraulic tiles decorate the interior and exterior. Upstairs, coir matting softens the hard floor surface and antique textiles and paintings furnish the walls. The living areas are very spacious ; kitchen with a dining area, dining room,sitting room complete with an American pool table. These all open onto outside courtyards and terraces.The thick stone walls ensure that the house is kept cool during the summer and maintains the warmth created during the winter from the central heating and log burning stove. There are bookshelves stacked with DVDs and interesting books, one dedicated just to Spanish themes. The kitchen is very well equipped for those who enjoy cooking and there is generally some variety of fruit,nut,or vegetable available from the garden. The private walled garden has an agapanthus lined stone path around the wall´s edge, hammocks and sun beds. it also boasts views across the valley towards Ronda. It is filled with roses,sage and lavender and at its heart an an ancient fig tree underplanted with iris. There are many areas to sit and relax, whether sun or shade is preferred. There are tables and chairs under vine covered corners for reading or dining, sumptuous floor cushions under a pergola and sun beds by the fountain. Beyond the private walled garden, there is land shared with the owners. Leaving the private walled garden a path shared with the owner leads over a small stone bridge which crosses the stream, until gates mark the next private garden and swimming pool. Here traverse the new orchard towards the swimming pool and find a lawn with swings, climbing frame and badminton net. In the land shared with the owner,find terraces filled with old apple, quince, plum and pear trees. At the edge of the property a Moorish stone aqueduct carries water for irrigation across the stream, and into the channel dug around the perimeter.

I am a London born painter living in Ronda.

Originally a Cambridge University History/Art History graduate I then chose to train at Rambert Dance School to become a contemporary dancer and choreographer.

Torn discs in my back ultimately brought this ten year era of my life to a close, so with a fervent desire to paint and my husband to write a book, we packed the car and drove to Spain for a six-month adventure.

We hoped to buy and renovate an old house to escape to for holidays.

And after a year, we did find an abandoned walnut and apple farm that was perfect for restoration.

One of the houses,S28635 is available for rent throughout the year.

A lovely place to stay and relax

Gabriella's house is wonderful and so is she. The house is in a quiet setting but the village of Arriate is only two kilometers away, and bustling Ronda is a ten minute drive away. There is much to do and see in the area,but also the option of doing nothing except enjoying the lovely patio and garden.

Owner's Response: It was a joy to have guests so fascinated by the local history, culture and food. They explored the area fully and took time to watch the Easter processions. When at home they enjoyed perusing the reference books we leave out ,cooking wonderful meals and family games of pool. A delight to meet.
