Country Barn West Wing

Updated: 28-Sep-2016
West Wing, Lantonhall, Nr. Jedburgh, Scottish Borders, Scotland - Secluded Country Location With Woodland Walks Where Badgers & Roe Deer Can Be Seen

Lantonhall was once a small farm on the Lothian estate. We have converted the barns into a spare room flat suitable for a wheelchair. There is a patio outside and orchard and plenty of parking space close to the door. It is quiet and safe for children and dogs to play outside.

A spacious and comfortable cottage in a pleasant location

  • 5 of 5

The photos on the website do not do this property justice. It is spacious, clean and comfortably furnished with pleasant views of farmland from the bedroom and kitchen windows. We were met on arrival by owner Ruth who showed us round, made us welcome and was at pains to say that if there was anything we needed or wanted to know during our stay we should let her know. We found this cottage, which is in an elevated position above Jedburgh, to be an excellent base for a holiday in the Scottish Borders. Jedburgh is a pleasant little town and as well as the Borders Abbeys there are many places of interest within reasonable driving distance. Try Hawick (Tower Mill Museum is worth a look) or Peebles (we liked the John Buchan Museum) or Moffat via spectacular scenery including Grey Mares Tail. Don't miss the surprising Smailholm Tower in it's wild and lonely setting. A day trip to Edinburgh using the Borders Railway which starts at nearby Tweedbank is highly recommended.

The Carters Rest opposite Jedburgh Abbey is an excellent choice for evening meals. There are bargains to be had at the various woollen mills.

Peaceful life

  • 3 of 5

Quiet surroundings in a beautiful part of Scotland. Really enjoyed our stay here & ideal for those wanting to escape the 'rat race' for a while.

We also took our dog who loved it here as lots of nice walks nearby.

Owners are lovely & couldn't be more helpful.

Would definitely recommend!

Comfy and warm!

  • 4 of 5

We were the first guests to stay since the barn was converted from a B&B to a self catering cottage by the addition of a kitchen. The place was lovely and warm, good bathroom, comfy beds, plenty of space. The kitchen was bright and airy, well-equipped from the point of view of electrical equipment (cooker, microwave, kettle, toaster, cooker). Unfortunately it was very poorly equipped with respect to crockery, cooking tools etc (a few good quality pans, but no oven-proof dishes, very few cooking spoons etc, not even a corkscrew!). However the owner asked for feedback and is planning on stocking the kitchen properly - so once this is done it will be a really lovely place to stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you Penny for your kind words. We have added all the little essentials that a kitchen needs and am glad that you were comfy and warm. We have yet to have a disabled guest and look forward to gaining comments on the flat's suitability. We have had a guide dog when we were a B&B oxo Ruth Johnson

From the Owner

We chose Lantonhall for it's country seclusion, not on a road where the dog's might get run over! It was a small farm and has fields around and walks in the Lothian estate woodland. Our lane is not tarmac but well kept.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Edinburgh & Newcastle at 50 Miles Nearest Barpub : Jedburgh at 3 Miles Nearest Golf : every town and more at 3 Miles Nearest Train : Berwick on Tweed at 36 Miles Nearest Motorway : M6 Carlisle at 50 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Born in the Borders, A 698 at 1 Miles Nearest Beach : Banburgh & Holy Island & St Abbs at 36 Miles Car: necessary

Special interest holidays:

The Scottish Borders is renowned for its hunting - there are 5 different packs of fox Hounds. Lantonhall is in the Jed Country. RIDING is a particular recreation and we have a good riding school in Lanton village. Each community has its own Riding Festival Week when everyone rides out to patrol the boundaries. Gymkhanas are also held and Floors Castle in Kelso has a 3 Day Event.

The area is rich in HISTORY, with ruined abbeys in several towns - Jedburgh Abbey is particularly fine. Also there are many great houses open to the public - Sir Walter Scott's house at Abbotsford is especially interesting. Just by Jedburgh the Roman's constructed Deer Street, and the Ancient Brittons settled on Wodenlaw.

WALKING is a popular recreation in the Borders, starting at Harestanes Woodland Centre 3 miles from here, also St Cuthbert's Way runs from Melrose to Holy Island.

FISHING is a must on the Tweed, it's tributaries and local lochs.

The sea, HOLY island is an hour's drive away (40 miles) and The SEA BIRDS on the Farne Islands are well worth a visit by boat from Sea houses.

Lantonhall is off the A698, 1 mile from the A68 which runs between Edinburgh and Newcastle. The A7 from Carlisle is 10 miles from Hawick.

Edinburgh and Newcastle Airport are equidistant away - an hour and a half to drive,

Berwick Station is 40 miles - over an hour away.

We are 3 fields from Lanton Village, 3 miles over the hill to Jedburgh.

3 miles to Deer Street, 10 miles to Hawick, 10 to Kelso, 12 to Melrose and 10 to the Tweed at St Boswells.

Edinburgh is 40 miles away - an hour's drive up the A68.

Carlisle is almost 2 hours down the A7.

Further Details:

There are many good restaurants in the Borders. We like The Cadyman (3mls) and The Denholm Meet (4mls) and the Carter's Rest in Jedburgh (3mls).

Jedburgh also has most shops and Banks, as well as a friendly warm Swimming Pool.
